When you watch them all together it is really impressive to watch how the series matured over the years and grew into a racing JUGGERNAUT.

Even if you are not a hardcore Forza fan or even a race fan any video game enthusiast can appreciate the depth and realism Turn 10 Studios has been able to create with the Forza racing series. When you watch these videos you can easily see why this is the most successful franchise in racing game history.

Gran Turismo was king.

By 2005, Gran Turismo was on its fourth release. Notorious for its long development times and delays, Gran Turismo 4 was still very well received by critics with its release on the Playstation 2. It was in this same year that Microsoft wanted to throw it’s attempt at a racing sim into the mix with Forza Motorsport for the Xbox. For the first time, Gran Turismo had competition for racing simulation supremacy.

Granted, Forza was exclusive to Xbox as Gran Turismo was to Playstation. Developer Turn 10 Studios wanted to make its mark and make it count. They were fully aware of what Gran Turismo had done since its original release, and Turn 10 wanted to make sure that Forza stood on its own and above Gran Turismo.

And miraculously, it did. Forza Motosport released to critical praise across the board. Many critics agreed that while it did many things better than Gran Turismo 4, it also did some things worse.

Forza Motorsport steps up to the bat and connects like a major leaguer, in some ways advancing past the somewhat stagnantGT series, and in some ways falling short. – IGN.COM

It’s car selection, car customization (both cosmetically and mechanically), track selection, career mode, and damage modeling, which Gran Turismo never had, helped Forza become the successful series it was meant to be on the Xbox. It also featured trainers to help newcomers to racing sims learn the tracks and cars such as a racing line to follow that would change color depending on when you needed to slow down or brake. Despite the Playstations 2’s ability to go online for multiplayer, Gran Turismo never took advantage of this until much later in the series. Forza kicked it up a notch by featuring 8 player online multiplayer and modes. This began the precedent for online racing sims on consoles.

Forza Has Arrived

With the release of the Xbox 360, Forza continued with Forza 2, 3, 4, and Horizon. Each iteration expanded upon the previous in the series which arguably forced Gran Turismo to keep up.  Forza 2 featured the same rich and sim heavy racing as it’s predecessor and added more comprehensive features, namely the ability to share your custom skins online, along with special tunings for cars, and selling your cars on the marketplace. This added a much welcome social aspect to the series and created a car club environment that was highly praised and received.

For the most part, Turn 10 refined each game and added more social features. Forza 4 in particular was a high point in the series. it featured integration from the Top Gear TV series and an absolutely impressive Auto Modellita mode that allowed you to inspect the interior and exteriors of many cars. These cars were nearly photo realistic models that looked like they were straight out of a showroom.

Forza Horizon was an entirely different twist on the Motorsport formula. Rather than focusing on simulations, they made the game more arcade-like in an open world fashion. Similar to Burnout Paradise, Horizon featured an open world in which you were had free reign to start races and complete races ranging from point-to-point and drift race. Social aspects were also a focus as well, including integration with Microsoft’s SmartGlass to have a second screen act as a map and GPS. Horizon was well received for its change on the Forza formula.

The Next Generation Of Forza Motorsport

Forza 5 would be Turn 10’s first foray into the next generation of gaming with the Xbox One. Simply put, the first thing to grab you on this game are its graphics. It was a truly impressive visual feat that couldn’t be possible on the 360.

With the extra horsepower of the Xbox One, Turn 10 was able to further develop the artificial intelligence and focus more on racing. However, this next gen offering did feature considerably less cars than its predecessors – Forza 4 featured nearly 500 cars, while Forza 5 had around 200. The racing and features were still up to the Forza standard, however.

A second next gen offering came in the form of Forza Horizon 2. Again, this was somewhat of an anti-thesis to the simulation racing of Forza 5, as it was a direct sequel to the original Horizon.

While Horizon took place in Colorado, Horizon 2 opted to go for the more exotic locations in Europe that included parts of France and Northern Italy. This open world would also be three times the size of the original Horizon’s map. Horizon 2 would also mark the first time a Forza game featured a dynamic weather system as well. Similar to Forza 5, Horizon 2 featured its own set of social online features in the name of Car Meets. This would allow you to share your tunings and custom skins with other racers and also compete in many different events.

The future of Forza is bright. Turn 10 is constantly striving to be ahead of the pack and make the most comprehensive and robust racing sim on the market and for the most part, they are succeeding. Forza 6 has just been announced and we can only imagine what Turn 10 will do considering 2015 is the 10th Anniversary of their beloved series. Gran Turismo and Forza will always be matched; either one will do some things better than the other, it’s just a matter of who can make it to the finish first.

The Most Influential Racing Games Of All Time

Where did Pole Position come from , what made it so special, and just how impactful was it on the racing game industry? Let’s steer our way into the 1980’s and get a feel for the classic arcade era.

Atari Night Driver: Pre Pole Position

When I was young, I had Night Driver for the Atari 2600. Like most 2600 games, it was very simple. You had your paddle control which functioned as a steering wheel and your gas button. Essentially, you had a static car that you had to guide through turns and obstacles which allowed you to gain points within a specified time limit. This was a port of an arcade game that released in 1976 and in my opinion, influenced Pole Position.

Pole Position just happened to do everything Atari Night Driver did, but exponentially better.

Namco’s Pole Position 1982

Developed by Namco and published by Atari in the U.S., Pole Position was a huge hit upon releasing in 1982. It made over $60 million dollars in 1983 on machines alone with each machine hitting over $450 per week in sales. Think about that…$450/week at 25 cents per play is 1,800 games every week. If you were an arcade owner 1980 just owning one Namco Pole Postion cabinet you grossed almost $24,000/year on just that one game. The old arcade classic was so popular that it even spun off into a cartoon.

So what made Pole Position so successful?

Simply put, it was unlike any racing game before it. Namco’s Pole Position produced a sit in arcade machine that was definitely a change from typical stand up cabinets and included a steering wheel, shifter, and gas and brake pedals. They did also produce standup cabinets that had a wheel, shifter, and an accelerator pedal, too.

Pole Position featured some incredible graphics at the time and perhaps the more unique aspect of the game was that you actually had to finish a time trial on the track before you could race against the computer. The track was based on the Fuji Racetrack in Japan and once you qualified, you were able to race in the Grand Prix against other racers.

You can certainly say that OutRun would not exist if Pole Position had not been released. OutRun’s similarities, graphically and mechanically, are derived from Namco’s Pole Position. This level of innovation in 1982 was unprecedented. We may have already had some great games in Pac-Man and Galaga, but this was an instance where the concept became fully realized in a new experience.

Namco wanted you to feel like you were driving a Formula One car and this could only be translated by sitting in the cabinet, taking the steering wheel and going through the Fuji Racetrack in the quickest time possible. It’s games like this that influenced the Gran Turismo’s, Forza Motorsports and all of the racing games that we have today

Namco’s Pole Position remains as a classic today and is considered by some as one of the best racing games ever, because of its influence on every racing game since. It was ported to many, many, consoles and included in various compilation discs and will forever remain on the list of 1980s classic arcade games. Interestingly enough, however, Pole Position is not playable on archive.org’s collection of arcade games you can play within your browser (ironically, OutRun is playable).

Is Namco’s Pole Position the best racing game ever? I ‘m not willing to say that, but you can certainly make the argument that it’s influence changed the racing game industry forever.

It also featured a stick shift, in game radio stations, brake and gas pedals, and a steering wheel with force feedback.

AGAIN THIS WAS  1986!

Needless to say, OutRun was far ahead of its time. Sega AM2, who would go on to develop huge arcade hits such as Space Harrier, Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA, and many others, created OutRun under the direction of Yu Suzuki.

Suzuki was the arcade genius who had a vision for immersive experiences at the arcade. He was always striving for another level of gaming and wanted to offer new games that were unlike anything else.

The objective of Sega OutRun was simple – make it through each route and checkpoint before time runs out. The graphics were vibrant and were in a pseudo-3D look. This was accomplished by creative sprite scaling to create a more immersive experience combined with the tight controls and high sense of speed.

This was the granddaddy of arcade racing games and unique cabinets

At the time, there was no way to duplicate this set up at home. Steering wheels with pedals for a home console game were unheard of and would likely be absurdly expensive. Essentially, OutRun helped pioneer racing setups for home consoles. OutRun saw great success during its run in arcades. Critics loved it and players couldn’t pump enough quarters into the machines.

The innovations OutRun created were later become an arcade staple. Different genres and games would have large cabinets you could sit in to give you a new experience, such as After Burner, Rad Mobile, and later on Crazy Taxi and the RUSH series of games.

OutRun would still maintain a presence throughout the years. Console ports were released on the Genesis which were certainly fun, but not nearly as exciting at the arcade cabinets. Peripherals just were not there for that kind of experience at home.

OutRun 2: Coast to Coast were eventually released for the PS2, PSP, and Xbox in the mid-2000s. They featured the same great gameplay as the original, but better graphics. The PS2 wasn’t as great of a port as the Xbox version, but there was more support to steering wheels for the PS2.

A port of Coast 2 Coast was released for PS3 and 360 on their respective marketplaces, but unfortunately, Sega’s license with Ferrari expired and the game was delisted in 2012.

One thing that shouldn’t be up for dispute is the influence OutRun had on arcades and eventual at home peripherals for racing games. 1986 saw the origins and now in 2015, we have only expanded and become more immersed in these kinds of experiences. Those immersive experiences were originally restricted to arcades, but now we can share them at home and create full racing setups. And we have OutRun to thank for a good part of this.

This is a highly subjective list put together by my good buddy Don Purnell, based on the titles that we gave a lot of burn to, instead of just looking to critically acclaimed games. This is not a debate about which console is better, which console had better games, or whats the best simulated racer…simply put with all things equal, what was the best and most fun racing game.

There were 2 rules for making this list:

1. Must have been released on Xbox 360 or PS3
2. Had to be a racing game

Ok, Enough with the excuses. let’s get into Don’s list and then start the debate in the comments!

10. F1 2011

This hidden gem by Codemasters is a must for F1 fans and typical racing sim fans. While light on customization options (this is F1 after all), F1 2011 features a rather steep learning curve that makes learning tracks and the intricacies of F1 satisfying. F1 2011 improves on the previous years edition in multiple ways. It added rule changes that were present in the F1 racing season and was a tighter game overall.

F1 2010’s criticism stemmed from its numerous bugs and lack of features; 2011 was released as a more complete and stable game. Codemasters would go on to release annual releases until F1 2014.

9. Blur

Bizarre Creations who are most known for Metropolist Street Racer and Project Gotham Racing released Blur in 2010 to fail solid reviews. Blur can be best described as Mario Kart with real cars. Although it can be also related to Diddy Kong Racing in the sense that it has weapons laid out in each track that are not randomized. You can bank these weapons, three at a time, to use against other racers. One weapon is a typical pea shooter that slows down racers, another is an area of effect sonic boom that shakes everyone off of you.

I can’t say for certain why this game wasn’t more successful – everything about it was very solid. it had varied tracks, great online features (despite it being completely dead online) and split screen. Unfortunately, we may never see a sequel to Blur since Bizarre Creations went out of business shortly after release.

8. Test Drive: Unlimited

Test Drive: Unlimited is one of the ultimate cruise games. The career mode is nothing special, the online features are perfectly serviceable, the car selection is good, and there is enough racing variety to keep your interest going. This may all sound mediocre, and to an extent, it just might be, but the largest draw of TDU is it is an entirely free roam driving game.

Pre-dating Burnout Paradise, this was the first true next gen racing experience for me. Eden Games modeled the entire island of O’ahu, Hawaii and you are free to cruise around at your leisure. No load times or transitions. Of course, you can buy houses, customize your cars, engage in rival races online, cruise with friends online, but I still consider this game something more of a leisure.

7. Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Criterion games has always been a racing powerhouse and the reimagining of the already great 2005 NFS: Most Wanted was a task only they could take on. This time featuring an open world environment, you were free to tackle tasks any way you wanted at any time. Robust online features, both competitive and cooperative round out arguably the best NFS game in years.

6. Sonic And All Stars Racing Transformed

I debated adding this game or Modnation Racers at number 6. Modnation Racers is a quality kart racing game with an immense amount of customizability modes and sharing modes, but ultimately the racing is just standard kart fare.

Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed is the best kart racer to date and in my eyes, far surpassing Mario Kart Wii(note: I’ve yet to play Mario Kart 8) in every aspect. Firstly, the games tracks are an absolutely incredible trip into Sega’s history and a nostalgic rush. Tracks based on Golden Axe and Afterburner are sure to put a stupid grin on your face with remixed music and references to their respective games.

The game takes a page from Diddy Kong Racing, but expands upon it. Most racers are 3 laps, and after each lap, the track drastically changes which causes your kart to transform into an aircraft or seacraft. Each character’s transforming vehicle is seamless; something out of Transformers, easily. This is a must for any kart racing fan, you’d be doing a disservice to yourself avoiding it.

5. Project Gotham Racing 4

This was my first addictive racing game for 360. PGR3 wasn’t a very good launch title. Sure, it showed off some of the 360’s power, but the game was just not up to the standard PGR2 had set before it went to the next generation of gaming. PGR4 hits the mark with a new expansive career mode that cross many years and seasons and racing mechanics that skate a fine line between arcadey and simulation. Make no mistake – this is still heavily grounded in the arcade handling realm, it just does it exceptionally well. Online modes keep the experience rich and ongoing if you’ve had your fill of the single player. Leveling up and credits to unlock new cars and tracks are incentive enough to make this a top racer.

4. Gran Turismo 6

Gran Turismo took forever to finally reach the PS3. Polyphony released a PSP game and Gran Truism 5: Prologue, which many would argue was a $30 demo for GT5. it would not be until 2010, four years after the release of PS3, would we finally get a Gran Turismo game.

While GT5 was certainly a great game, it still had some growing pains for being in development so long. Let’s not forget that Gran Truismo 1 had apparently been in development since 1992 and wasn’t released until 1997. Gran Turismo 6 was released in 2013 and it felt like a much better GT experience. With over 1200 cars to buy and choose form, better online modes, better graphics, better everything, GT6 was the one to get on PS3.

3. Grid

Another Codemasters game…known as Race Driver: Grid in Europe and Grid in the U.S., this under rated racer was released in 2008. This game was a pleasant surprise for me; the graphics were stunning and the racing were mechanics were absolutely tight. The extensive career mode had you playing various races between the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Drift Mode was insanely fun and showcased the amount of control you really had over your cars. You would have to manage your team; if your team placed high, sponsors would pay your more money. You added sponsor decals to your cars along with customizable layers and paint jobs, to stand out from the pack.

2. Forza Motorsport 4

Forza 4 is the most comprehensive simulation experience for the last generation. Turn 10 pulled out all the stops for their last iteration on the 360. More cars, more modes, more online and social features, most customizability, more tracks, better handling…you get the idea…everything was refined to provide the player with nearly any possible option they wanted in a racer. This is it. Gran Truism 6 was great, but Forza 4 just offers a fuller experience.

1. Burnout Paradise

Burnout Paradise is by far my favorite racing game of the last generation. Set in the aptly named Paradise City, it is a sandbox of arcade racing. Whether it’s the crash modes, point to point races, head to head, take down races, multitude of car challenges, Paradise is just a drive away.

The DLC is some of the best for any racing game and fairly worthwhile. The idea of driving the Back to the Future DeLorean, WITH hover optional hover mode, is worth the price of admission alone. You’ll constantly be completing missions to raise your license rank and even go online with friends and others in head to head races, of which there are many types. This is the virtual equivalent of playing with your Hot Wheels set as a kid, but at blistering speed.
