That was until of course I tried the Astro Gaming A40 TR Headphones for Xbox One. This headset is the most current offering for x box console owners and they perform phenomenally in almost every single aspect.

At a price point around $250 you would expect them too, but to be honest that is a fair priced headset. They are a significantly improved version from the previous A40’s Astro put out for Xbox.

The A40 TR’s don’t seem to have any of the issues that the previous version experienced. Now the audio is crisp and clear through the dolby enabled speakers and the live chat. Drop outs won’t occur on this set of headphones and you can even use them semi-wirelessly if you have them plugged into your controller via the stereo adapter. The only downside to hooking them up to the controller is that you loose the surround sound effect that is driven by plugging them into the MixAmp Pro TR that they come packaged with. They will still produce high quality audio in stereo via the controller, but not surround sound.

The MixAmp Pro TR Puts Your Xbox One In Surround Sound

Using the MixAmp is the best solution and it is plug in and play. The one downside to it is that the cable is a little bit short compared to previous models of the MixAmp. This might end uo being an issue if you play games on your Xbox and sit far away from your television.

The only real con of the MixAmp pro though from a technical perspective is that it will only be compatible with the Xbox One and Xbox One S. If you have a PS3 or PS4, you would need to shell out more money for a new MixAmp.

So while it performs great it’s not the best for someone looking for a multi-platform solution.

Best Headphones For Xbox One and Xbox One S

Every aspect of this headset is rock solid! They are constructed well and are a really impressive looking set of cans. The set really hugs your head nice and snug, but doesn’t squeeze the life out of your face and the ear pieces have a nice high end cushiony feel that will make hours of wearing them feel comfortable. These are by far the best headphones for Xbox 1 and are one of my favorite accessories for my console.

A40 TR Headset Add On Mods

Another cool aspect of the A-40 is the add on mod kit you can get which turns them from open to closed back. You can pick up the mod for about $60 and it lets you switch the pad on the headband and the ear pieces for a thicker faux leather version. the advantage you get with this is that it eliminates excess noise in the room. Even with the mod kit on, the headphones remain comfortable. the mod kit is not a must own, but i would recommend it if you are normally playing games in a noisy environment.

There is also a mic that comes with the mod kit. It is uni-directional which means it will only pick up audio from directly in front of it. this also helps eliminate extra room noise coming through on your live chat microphone.

My Final Opinion on The A40TR Headset

This set of headphones from Astro Gaming is among the best audio solutions you can get as a gamer. They do a great job of simulating surround sound in both movies and games while also producing a very clean sounding chat mic.

The MixAmp Pro TR is perfect not just for audiophiles but for live streamers who want lag-free and interference free operation. The MixAmp allows you to control every input and output so that you can fine tune everything to your specific recording setup. If you are in the market for a headset this is the pair to get.

The My Passport X game drive will allow you to free up alot of space on your Xbox internal drive by transferring your games over. An added benefit is that games on you WD external drive will actually load a few seconds faster. This drive is also portable so it’s easy to unplug and bring your games over to your friends houses.

The WD My Passport X Drive is Easy To Install

The Western Digital drive has plug-and-play functionality and fast power up.

When you first install it you will need to walk through the formatting process before you can store anything on it.

Also worth noting, when you hook up the drive you will have 1.8 TB of free space and not 2 TB. This is common on all external drives because there are some system files that take up a little bit of space.

Moving Games From Your Hard Drive to the WD is Easy

If you have games on your internal drive taht you want to shift over to the WD My Passport X drive its a really simple process. You just need to have your WD drive plugged in, go to MANAGE GAMES, and then select MOVE.

After that you just select the WD My Passport X Drive and then the selected games will automatically move from your internal hard drive onto your external drive.

You can store music, videos, or games on your WD drive. If you have a 2TB drive it will hold about 50 games total depending on the size of the games of course.

Note: Large games take a little while to move. Don’t expect instant results.

Portable

It’s super easy to unplug your drive and take your game library with you to their house. To hook it up to another Xbox you just need to hook it up to the USB drive and sign in. After you sign in, you can access the drive.

WD My Passport X 2TB Drive Review – Wrap Up

This drive is extremely well received at Amazon with 5 stars and over 200 reviews. While I chose to purchase the Seagate 2TB Game drive, I heavily considered this WD drive.

From all of my research which included videos, reading articles, and consumer reviews from what I can tell the Western Digital Drive is a solid product and people love it. People consider this drive to be a lifesaver and you will be hard pressed to find any negative info about it.

If you were in the market for an external hard drive the WD My Passport X is a great option and is on par with it’s main competitor the Seagate Game Drive.

Both drives looked promising and had all 5 Star reviews on Amazon…so to be honest I picked the Seagate because it was exclusively made for the Xbox and it had over 400 5 star reviews. Overall I am extremely happy with it, it works perfectly as advertised, and I have freed up so much space on my internal Xbox drive.

It did make my games load significantly faster also. For example, normally Forza 6 takes roughly 25 seconds to load a race, now a race loads in about 15 seconds or so when I play the game directly from the Seagate drive.

There are other options for larger space if you need it. I ended up getting the 2TB drive, but there is also a 4TB version.

I decided to grab one of these Xbox 1 Accessories, simply because I HATE typing out game codes and messages with a controller. Using the chatpad is so much more convenient, efficient, and user friendly!!

After being happy with my Xbox Media Remote, I decided maybe this gadget was worth a shot.

Xbox One Chatpad Features

– Comes with a Chat Headset with a 3.5mm jack (plugs directly into bottom of Chatpad)
– Has a full QWERTY keyboard and a backlit keypad for typing in the dark
– Has audio control including volume, game/chat mix, and mic mute
– Compatible with Xbox One and Windows 10

Best Features

Besides of course the aspect of typing…One of the best features is the backlight keyboard. The ability to type in the dark is so nice and I am actually not sure how I lived without it. The chat pad also has some feature buttons for screen snapshots and also video recording. The orange and green button will enable you to enter special characters from the keyboard.

Using it couldn’t be easier and it kind of feels like what a blackberry cellphone type pad was made out of. The buttons are more of a hard plastic than a rubber. If you had tried the old Xbox 360 chatpad, this is pretty similar (although this wont work on the 360).

Makes Certain Game Features Easier

As a regular player of racing games, like Forza 6, I am also tuning cars and creating designs. this means I have to name files when I save them and I also have to write a description. I use to skip the description section because I didn’t have the heart to bang out a full description in the on screen keypad one letter at a time. Now with the chatpad I write better file names and descriptions which allow more gamers to find my designs and tunes when they use the search feature in FM6.

High Durability & Quality

The manufacturing of the product looks and feels solid and it met my expectations for what I wanted in a Microsoft accessory. I can’t stress to you the importance of this, because one you use this chatpad, you will find yourself using it every single day, so it’s important that it holds up under duress.

Some Chatpads Have Issues, But Not This One

I read through a ton of Amazon reviews before I purchased this. this Chatpad has over 150 reviews and comes in strong at 4 stars. When comparing it against other similar chatpads, there are two things that stand out: the fit and the headphone jack.

Some of the other chat pads people report them fitting to loose or becoming loose overtime. The other complaint is that some don’t have a headphone jack and when you plug in the chat pad, you can no longer use headphones.

for those reasons I recommend playing it safe and getting the Microsoft version of the Xbox One Chat-pad. It’s a bit pricier than the competitors, however it is simply a better product.

Xbox One Chatpad Review

Overall I really like the chatpad, but they could have knocked 5 bucks off the price and spared us the task of throwing away the cheap headphones. The xbox One Chatpad will work with any standard Xbox One controller and even the Elite Controller. Any kind of headphones with a 3.5mm plug will work, doesn’t matter the brand only the size of the plug.

The cheap headphones are what prevent me from giving this a 5 star review. I couldn’t be happier with the actual keyboard itself and the ease in which it makes typing. If you are entering codes, sending messages, typing in the search box on Netflix, or typing out a full URL in IE on your Xbox One, this product will majorly upgrade experience and remove all on screen keypad headaches. This product is easy to recommend and I think it will revolutionalize the way you feel about typing on the Xbox One.

I have bought Nyko products in the past such as the Nyko Controller charger (which ranks at #3 on our list of Top 5 Xbox One Controller Chargers) and I have always been happy with the quality of their products.

Who is The Nyko Intercooler For?

This product is made for people who run their Xbox for hours. If you are a heavy gamer or use your Xbox One for media like Blu-ray, streaming video, etc…you may want to consider one of these devices. When the Xbox One runs too hot it can effect it’s performance and show glitches in the graphics.

Super Easy Installation

The installation was super simple and it fits perfect on top of the Xbox One. It attaches to the console by switching the Intercooler from “lock” to the “unlock” position and then placing it on the top right of the console. It fits perfectly and was designed to spec so it should naturally slide into place and clamp down comfortably. Once it’s on your console, just change it back to the “lock” position and you are good to go.

The Intercooler is powered by USB and does not require an external plug. The USB is built into the device itself with a sturdy plastic L-shaped USB connector that wraps around the back of your console and slides into your top USB port in the back.

Perfect Design

The Cooler of the Nyko Intercooler is a matte black and it has some chrome trim on it. It’s not a true chrome, it looks like a painted chrome, but for under $25 that’s what I expected. It’s made of plastic and fits snug right on top of your console.

Functionality: It Works As Advertised

Once I got this thing up and running (which took less than 5 minutes), it started working right away.

If you sit a foot away from the console you can hear the fan cut on and off, but it’s really quiet. You certainly can’t hear it at all if are running your TV at low volume. If you reach your hand out you can feel the air blowing gently from the device. The fan cuts on and off as it needs, so that it can keep your Xbox One console at the perfect temperature. It’s great that blows the air out of the front, because if it blew air up or towards the back of the console it would create further dust in your entertainment center.

A Few Limitations

If you are gonna run the Intercooler, you will have a few limitations. For one if you have your Xbox One on a shelf and it doesn’t have a lot of clearance, it may not fit. The unit attached on your Xbox console adds about 2 to 2.5 inches in height. Second, if you have a dust cover on your console it will not fit on if you attach the Intercooler.

What Microsoft did was pass all the options to you as a gamer, basically they made every part interchangeable, added new input options, switches, and made all of the configurations customizable. They did all of this without sacrificing the feel of the best game controller in the industry.

When I first heard about this controller announced at E3 I was amped up for this, but when I saw the $150 price tag at Amazon I had my reservations. After watching the video below I decided to pre-order the elite controller.

The official release date is October 31, 2015

What Is the Xbox One Elite Controller Compatible with?
Xbox One and PC.. In order to customize and configure the paddles, it will be done with an app, which will be available on A PC running Windows 10 and also on the Xbox One.

While the controller is wireless it sounds like to make it wireless on the PC you will need a wireless adapter, which will be sold separately.

What’s included with the Elite Controller?
4 paddles in 2 sizes, 6 sticks in 3 sizes, and 2 d pads…plus a case for the controller.

How Does The Elite Controller Feel For Gameplay?
From what I have read the Elite controller is slightly heavier than your standard Xbox controller, but it feels like the same exact ergonomic design in your hands. The rubber can really help you maintain a grip on the controller and the fact that it has a bit of a squeeze to it feels nice.

The thumbstick extenders really give a lot of options for how you want your controller to feel. If you are not familiar with them they increases your range of motion and reduce your reaction times. They really make a huge difference in FPS games and making turns in driving game like Forza. You can learn more about thumbstick extenders here.

In my opinion one of the best features is the Octagon for the d-pad. It really will make the d-pad more functional for games that require you to roll your thumb, particularly fighting games. I am looking forward to getting a feel for the paddles as well.

Do you still need the Stereo Headset Adapter?
No, you can plug a standard 1/8inch headphone jack directly into the controller. There is still a USB port on the base of the controller, so you could still use it if you wanted, but it is no longer necessary to hook up your gaming headset.

em>Will it work with a chatpad?
Yes. it has hookup on the bottom that allows an Xbox One chatpad to be plugged into it.

Does the Elite controller have a normal battery life?
It has a Micro USB Cable but no rechargeable battery. It will come with Two Double A batteries. My best guess is that the secondary market will make a rechargeable battery for this and offer it for sale separately.

Does the Elite controller have Vibration?
Yes, and initially I thought the rubber grips would reduce the amount of vibration, but most websites indicate that it is a good strong vibration. It should offer the same micro vibrations, which are key to games like Forza, when you can feel your tires locking up.

The Buttons, Switches, Paddles, and Triggers

All the buttons, switches, paddles and triggers look to move pretty seamlessly with no sticking of forced input. You can also set the triggers to hair trigger, which reduces the amount of input needed to activate the triggers, by about 50%. This is clutch for going rapid fire with the triggers in FPS games, all you have to do is flip a switch on the bottom of the controller.

The Sticks on the New Xbox Controller

The sticks on the Elite controller move and operate the same and as smooth as a standard controller. The thumbstick extenders are really what make the difference. The elite controller offers 3 variation of thumbstick extenders (small, medium, and large) and they pop on and off by means of magnets.

What really makes this controller versatile is that you can switch’em all around and get the exact feel you like. For me, I like a concave thumbstick extenders on the left stick and that’s it. I think the large thumbstick extenders may bit a bit too hign for most people because it makes the throw of the stick very long.

The Paddles on The elite Controller

There are two different size paddles that can interchanged. They attach to the bottom of the controller with magnets. There purpose is to allow you more control and the ability to access your buttons more conveniently for making faster inputs.

Configuration options on the Elite Controller

Here is where Microsoft outdid themselves. You have full configuration control. In other words, you can map two “B” buttons if you want. You can also switch around your “A”, “B”, “X”, “Y” and assign them to any input button on the controller, including the inputs on the bottom. As I mentioned earlier this is done through an app. From what we know know it doesn’t sound like you can program macro’s or combo buttons.

I Own and Love the Nyko Charge Base Station

Truth be told I don’t actually own the Xbox One Play and Charge Kit, I have the 3rd ranked charger the Nyko Charge Base – X box One. I personally like putting both of my controllers on a charging station instead of having to manage cables and plugging the controllers in.

For me so far the Nyko Charge base has worked out great and I have had no issues with the device itself or it’s ability to keep my Xbox controllers charged. It is worth noting though that I am also diligent about making sure I put them back on the docking station and I also use the Xbox One Media Remote for everything but gaming. I rank the Energizer higher than the Nyko simply because of the amount of customer reviews, but have all in all this docking station has been great.

What You Should Pay For A Good Xbox Controller Charger

In my opinion a good charge base should cost between $20 and $40. Anything more than $40 is much too over priced. You can get a good charging station that looks nice, lasts a long time, and does its job without spending a fortune.

How Long Should a Charge Last

Well that might depend on how intense of a game you are playing. For example if I am just using my controller sporadically to navigate through movies, using the chatpad, and generally moving around the console it will last for days without being put back on the charger. On the other hand if I am playing games like Battlefield or Forza Motorsport I usually can squeeze a solid 4 to 5 hours of hardcore gameplay out of a fully charged Xbox 1 controller.

For the most part you can usually tell when the charge is running out as you will see some lag on your gaming inputs. The controller just won’t suddenly konk out, you will first notice its reacting slow. Whats nice about some chargers is that they have LED indicator lights on them so you can tell how much of a charge is in the controller when you put it on or are looking to remove it from the docking station.

The Xbox One Media Remote

The Xbox 1 Media remote looks and functions like a TV remote and looks a bit more sophisticated when you have people over and you leave it sitting on your couch. I bought one of these about 3 weeks after I got my Xbox One and my motivation was that I kept forgetting to put my Xbox controllers back on the charge base.

There is nothing like going to play a game and realize you have no battery life and who the hell wants to deal with Kinect voice commands for watching movies?

Let’s get into the specifics…

The Xbox Media Remote is light weight (4 ounces), has a soft flat black top, and a hard plastic bottom. It takes two AAA batteries of which in my experience didn’t need to be replaced until after about 15 months.

The Backlit Buttons Are Awesome

One of my favorite features is that it has backlit buttons that lights up when it senses movement like picking it up. It’s really helpful when you are fumbling around in the dark on your couch looking for the remote, once your hand taps it, it lights up.

Easy For Anyone To Use

Because this thing is like a TV remote, even my guests who come over don’t need to know how to use an Xbox controller to use the Xbox. It’s simple point and click, with easy to understand buttons that navigate the Xbox menus and control Blu-ray movies, streaming video and apps. It also works with the Kinect to control power and volume on your TV or receiver.

While the remote doesn’t have tons of buttons on it, it has exactly what you need, with the most helpful being the OneGuide button. The OneGuide button provides one-touch, quick access to all of your favorites in one place.

The one thing it won’t help you with is typing, because it doesn’t have a keypad. So if for example you want to find a movie on Netflix and use the search feature, you need to use the navigation buttons to type in the name of your movie using the on screen keypad. If you were looking to make typing more efficient, then you would need a chatpad for a controller.

The one function that makes the Xbox media remote different than using an Xbox controller is that it requires a direct line of site to the Xbox in order for your inputs to register. The controller has about a 30 foot range in a straight line from the console, where as a controller doesn’t require a direct line. Also this will not work if you have a dust cover on your console covering the front sensor.

Is It Like The Old Xbox 360 Remote?

No! If you remember the old Xbox 360 remote, which was functional, but was heavy and contained worthless buttons this remote, blows that one out of the water. The Xbox 360 remote look like a TV remote from the 90’s, the Xbox One Media Remote looks appropriate for 2015 and beyond.

Just in case your also wondering if the Xbox 360 media remote will work on the Xbox One, the answer unfortunately is no. There are other Media Remotes by other companies, but none that compete with this handy device.

All in all, I think the Xbox One Media remote is a great Xbox accessory. It does what I expected it do, it looks and feels like a high quality product, and it’s much more convenient for watch movies and TV on my Xbox One.

Really for less than 25 bucks, this thing is a great product. That’s also not just according to me…Amazon has over 650 user reviews, that average out to 4 stars…that’s a high average for that many reviews.
