Thrustmaster Leather 28 GT Wheel Add-On Review | $150

Thrustmaster Leather 28 GT Wheel Add-On Review | $150

The Thrustmaster VG TM Leather 28 GT Wheel Add-On is very similar to the Thustmaster 458 Challenge Rim released in 2013. This rim feels like a race car steering wheel in your palms, flexible and comfortable, and the force feedback is delivered to your arms like grabbing the safety bar on a roller coaster. Thrustmaster designed the wheel’s structure to emulate automotive standards and stepped it up a notch engineering this wheel.

“Of all of the Thrustmaster add-on rims, this delivers the BEST Force Feedback”

What they did was aim to keep the rim light weight and build it with only leather and metal so that when your racing wheel base vibrates and gives force feedback it sends all of that energy right into your hands and through your arms. I can’t imagine there is much lost in the transfer of energy.

Here is a Great Video of The Rim

Its Compatibile On Multiple Thrustmaster Wheels

The rim is compatible with all of the Thrustmaster steering wheels released in the T-series (TX Racing Wheel Ferrari 458 Italia Edition / T300 RS / T500 RS / T300 Ferrari GTE / / Ferrari F1 Wheel Integral T500 ). For Xbox One racers this rim can be added to the TX F458 Italia Edition, or the TX Servo Base. It also comes as the standard as the rim on the TX Leather Premium Edition.

The Steering Wheel Feels Real

The wheel is incredibly light weight coming in just over 2 pounds and the leather has a really authentic feel in your palms. The diameter is 11 inches, which for reference is the same diameter as the other T-series wheels like the Thrustmaster TX Italia Edition stock rim. The leather is wrapped around a steel hoop and really gives the feel of a true GT leather rim.

Black Brushed Metal Center Column Looks Bad Ass

Thrustmaster VG TM Leather RimThe center column is made of brushed metal and has 6 clearly identified buttons, a 3 position rotary switch with a push function in the central position, and a multi-directional D-pad. The button placement and layout is pretty nice and easy to access with your thumbs while you are racing.

The center emblem that says TM and the actual buttons and D pad are really about all that is plastic on the center column. This wheel is made of high quality and Thrustmaster didn’t skimp on materials.

Paddle Shifters Make A Nice “Click” When Engaged

There are two thick brushed metal sequential paddle shifters which move with the wheel when its turned. They have a nice metallic finish and a realistic spring system that makes a nice click when they are engaged. One of the best quality’s that Thrustmaster included in the TM Leather 28 GT Rim was a high end tact switch in the shifters that boast a life cycle of more than 10 million activations.

The TM Leather 28 GT Rim Add on also has the great quick release system that allows you to switch from one Thrustmaster steering wheel to another.

TM Leather 28 GT Wheel Add-On vs The Ferrari 458 GTE Wheel Add On

The TM Leather GT Rim Add On vs The Ferrari 458 Rim Add on

As someone who is a HUGE fan of the Thrustmaster Ferrari 458 GTE Wheel add on, the VG TM Leather 28 GT Rim may be my new favorite add on. The two rims are extremely similar though and if you already own the GTE rim, I will have a hard time telling you it’s worth owning both.

If however, you are in the market for a rim add on and you are choosing which one to get…

“I think the Leather 28 GT Wheel Add-On is a better rim for only a few extra bucks”

There are the main differences that I think make the TM Leather GT Wheel a better rim than the 458 GTE Wheel.

  • The TM GT rim really pushes the vibration and force feedback into your hands better than the 458 GTE rim.
  • The leather on the TM Leather GT feels better than the re-enforced rubber rim on the 458 GTE rim
  • The TM Leather rim feels slightly thicker in your hands giving it more authentic feel
  • The buttons on the TM are a bit less juvenile and contain no markings
  • The price as of now is about $20 more for the TM Leather GT Wheel
  • I like the plastic TM logo better than the cheap looking Ferrari logo on the GTE rim

Thrustmaster TM Leather GT Wheel Review Wrap Up

This is a great rim add on and the force feedback feels really strong. I am using it with the Thrustmaster TX and as of now it is my rim of choice. The rim is definitely made of high quality materials and you can feel it from the moment you pull it out of the box. It snaps on your wheel base really easy and gets you right into your driving experience. This rim is definitely a good purchase and if you are considering upgrading from a stock T-series rim, this rim is 1000X better.

    Great review!
Thinking about purchasing this add-on myself but wondering is there a market for the original wheel that comes with the Thrustmaster TX Racing wheel Ferrari 458 Italia Edition?
Any suggestions on what to do with the original wheel?

    • James says:

      Hi James,

I don’t think there is a secondary market as is, but what you can do is try to customize it and then sell it. I have thought about putting carbon fiber sticker on mine and trying to sell it on ebay. It’s a tough sell as is because the base of the TX is not sold without the rim. Therefore someone looking for just the rim has probably broke it.

Hello geniuses! I am very interested in the leather steering wheel. I want to tell you also have a Ferrari and I see that are very similar. What I would like to know if the leather steering wheel, the grip is thicker and if there really is a difference in the feeling of grip.

Sorry for my English, I use a translator. I still daily from Spain.

    A greeting and thanks!

    • James says:

      Hey Papelito,

Do have the Ferrari GT or the standard rim that comes with the TX? If you have the GT that is made of re-enforced rubber, I do like the grip on it better than the leather, however the leather rim rim transfers the force feedback better than all of them. Both rims are actually really great, but pretty similar. If you have the stock TX rim then I would definitely upgrade to the Leather GT or the Ferrari Challenge rims.
