Dirt Rally is a great simulated rally racing game, which means it ain’t meant to be played with a controller.
If you are looking for an immersive rally experience that will give you the feel and pump your adrenaline like a real rally car driver, then you MUST play with a steering wheel.
Today we got you covered with our two best suggestions based on price and performance. All three of the driving wheels below are great with any racing games, but they stood out amongst the others when we tested them with the DiRT Rally game.
There are a few Xbox One Racing Wheel options ranging from $80 to $500 (and even more if you want to go super high end). So let’s break it down and show you the three best options for whipping around your cars like a real rally driver. If you are looking for a PS4 Wheel go here.
3 Best Racing Wheel Options for DiRT Rally on Xbox One:
Choice #1: Thrustmaster TX ($300 – $450)
The Thrustmaster TX is the number one wheel choice for the best experience in DiRT Rally particularly for Xbox One. It’s offered in three options: the wheelbase only, The 458 Italia Edition, and the 458 Leather Edition.
No matter which version you get they all use the TX wheelbase which delivers force feedback precise, strong, smooth, and exceptionally quiet!! The TX is great with DiRT rally because of how well the TX wheelbase is able to transfer the feel of the road into force feedback and vibration.
It does a great job of helping you feel how the rear of the car is handling on the snow, dirt, tarmac, and gravel surfaces. This is particularly important in rally racing games because you want to be able to control your drift through the turns. It also offers 270 to 900 degrees of rotation, which you can adjust on the fly.
Whats also nice is that TX has options. You can buy the servo wheelbase ($250) as a standalone unit and then purchase a wheel rim and pedal set, the TX Italia Edition ($300) comes with the servo base, a wheel rim and a 2 pedal set, and the Leather Edition ($470) comes with a servo base,3 pedal set, and an upgraded leather rim.
The Thrustmaster TX is Upgradable
One of the things that makes the TX so powerful is that there are lots of choices for additional components that are sold separately. Here are just a few:
Several Mounting Options
The TX will mounts on almost all sim racing rigs and it also comes with a table clamp. I personally use the Playseat Evolution, but the OpenWheeler Advanced may be a better choice for a seat that feels more like a rally car.
If a racing seat is out of your budget a wheel stand is your next best option. (click here for the correct wheel stand fo the TX).
My Final Opinion on The Thrustmaster TX for DiRT on Xbox One
The Thrustmaster TX is a fantastic driving wheel and out delivers in every way against wheels at a similar price point. The fact that the TX is so upgradable it makes it great for any racing game, not just DiRT. My best recommendation for DiRT is getting the TX leather edition and at minimum adding on the TH8A shifter, which would take you to just over $600.
Choice #2 Thrustmaster TMX ($200)
The next best choice for DiRT Rally is the Thrustmaster TMX force Feedback Racing Wheel. The TMX has a few similarities to the TX, but doesn’t have the hefty price tag. Thrustmaster built this wheel with a belt and pulley motor to generate force feedback. While the force feedback isn’t as strong as the TX motor, it does deliver a smooth and quiet racing experience. The TMX wheel performs really well with DiRT and gives a nice accurate translation of the rough terrain. You can really feel your car losing the rear end on the loose surfaces, which helps you make steering adjustments to keep the car under control.
The TMX racing wheel comes standard with a 2 pedal set and has adjustable rotation degrees from 270 to 900. While the pedal set leaves a bit to be desired, for this price point the wheel is worth every penny. The pedals do have a brake with progressive resistance, which is a nice feature for an entry level racing wheel and very helpful for making the tight turns on the stages.
The TMX Steering Wheel is Upgradable
The TMX does not allow you to change out the rim. The rim on the wheel is fixed on and does not swap out. It is compatible on the PC.
Options for Mounting
The TMX racing wheel comes with a table clamp and does not have pre-drilled holes for mounting on cockpits. You can however mount it on the Ultimate Wheel Stand.
My Final Opinion on The Thrustmaster TMX
The Thrustmaster TMX Steering Wheel is a fantastic for a casual or soon to be sim racer. The price makes it such a good value and the fact it’s future upgradeable means you have room to grow. DiRT Rally was designed as a sim rally racer and this entry level racing wheel performs better than a few mid priced wheels. My best recommendation for the TMX is to add the T3PA wide set, which brings your total to right around $300.
Choice #3 Thrustmaster VG Ferrari Spider ($90)
My third selection for DiRT Rally is the Thrustmaster 458 Spider racing wheel. This wheel is an affordable option that will give you a decent racing experience without the price tag. While the lower price means less options and features the wheel is a far better choice than the Hori racing wheel.
The 458 Spider doesn’t have the options to add on components, adjust the degree, or wheel rotation like the TX, it does offer a solid driving experience via a pulley-bungee cord mechanism that provides wheel resistance and a two pedal set with a progressive brake.
Two of the aspects I think this wheel misses the most with DiRT Rally is the vibration and the static wheel rotation degree. Because of the different terrains you can drive on in DiRT Rally you can’t get a great feel for the road surface without vibration. Also the wheel rotation is fixed at 240 degrees, which I tend to prefer between 500 and 900 degrees on rally car games.
2 Options For Mounting The 458 Spider
The Thrustmaster Spider comes with a table clamp, but there are better options than a table. It also mounts easily on a wheel stand, which helps put your body in a driving position and can secure your pedals in place so they don’t slide around on the floor. click here for the wheel stand it is compatible with.
My Final Opinion on The Thrustmaster 458 Spider
If you are a casual rally racer or a rally racer on a budget, this wheel is a solid choice. The best advice I can offer on the 458 spider is that it feels way better than a controller, it hands down buries the Hori racing wheel, and its a super affordable way to add some immersion.
Best Steering Wheel for DiRT Rally Wrap Up
All 3 wheels are great and are far better than racing with a controller, especially when you get the best settings for the game. Your experience though ultimately depends on what you want to spend and how serious you are about rally racing.
The TX is the best option compared to other wheels at the mid level price range, but the other two Thrustmaster wheels definitely pull their weight at their respective price points.
If you wanted to take a peak at some other DiRT Rally steering wheel options here are other choices available: the Mad Catz Racing Wheel and the Logitech G920 both work with the game, but don’t quite stack up to the Thrustmaster choices.
