The standard package includes the racing wheel and a 2 pedal set (gas and brake). It does have the ability for adding on some components in the Thrustmaster eco-system and there is also a Pro version available which features a 3 pedals set.

Thrustmaster Steering Wheels for Xbox One

If you are not familiar with Thrustmaster they have been making wheels for consoles and PC’s for a long time. They have a reputation for making high quality mid priced driving wheels. The TMX is not their first offering on the Xbox One, but it is their first at this price.

The TMX steering wheel’s price point puts it just below the Thrustmaster 458 Italia edition ($300) and just above the Thrustmaster 458 Spider ($100). It is Thrustmaster’s answer to the T150, a similar product that is made for PS4.

Lets a take a hard look at the TMX and see what Thrustmaster has to offer…

TMX Force Feedback Racing Wheel Specs

A Great Racing Experience

When I received this wheel I tested it mounted to a Playseat Evolution using the TMX Mounting Adapter and I also tried it with a Ultimate WheelStand…I was SERIOUSLY surprised for the price how good this wheel feels in games like Forza 6, DiRT Rally and Project Cars. Its worth noting that the TMX does not normally mount to a cockpit, you need a mounting adapter.

Force Feedback Engine is Quality

The force feedback is smooth, strong (but not over powering), quiet, and does a good job of translating the feel of the road. It reacted great to my driving inputs and had a nice pull back as I was drifting through corners.

For a belt and pulley mechanism this is a big upgrade from the bungee cord mechanism inside the Thrustmaster Spider. It’s not quiet as strong as the TX, but it delivers a great simulated racing feel that is immersive!

The Wheel Rim Center Column is Well Designed

The rim on the TMX is similar to other rims Thrustmaster has designed and because of that it has a nice layout with all of your buttons easy to reach while racing.

A good button layout is helpful because in most games you will need to use your right thumb while driving to hit the “A” button for the handbrake. For example in DiRT Rally you need to use the handbrake a lot and you will be thankful you can hit the button without letting go of the rim. You simply can reach over with your thumb and hit the button while you steer.

I don’t love the “TM” emblem or colored buttons on the center column, but I can live with not loving the aesthetics because what it lacks in looks it makes up for in performance and price.

I also am a big proponent of the D-pad on the center column, which makes navigating menus much easier. The paddle shifters are a comfortable distance from the rim, they move with the rim as you turn, and they make a nice click sound and spring back into place when they are engaged.

The Rubber on the Steering Wheel Rim is Grippy

The rim has a rubber grip on it which helps your hands hold the wheel through the force feedback.

I wish they covered the whole wheel with the rubber that they have at the 9 and 3 positions, but its still pretty good. For me since I drive with the TH8A shifter I normally one hand the wheel at the 12 O’clock position in games like Forza. When using the paddle shifter your hands are right on the rubber and its got a nice feel in your hands. I actually like this rim better than the stock rim on the TX Italia Edition although that is an overall better wheel.

It Comes Standard With a Progressive Brake

If you have never raced with a wheel and pedal set before, then you perhaps can’t appreciate what it means to have a progressive brake. A progressive brake simulates the feel of real braking…the further you push the brake down in distance the harder it gets to push down.

The progressive brake does a good job of simulating real brake pressure…not quite as good as brake mod on higher end pedals, but it gets the job done.

The pedals are responsive and they offer a nice push back under your feet. I didn’t try to adjust the pedal angles at all, but doing so looks to be really easy.

The Throttle pedal throw distance is a little bit long for my taste, but that is a normal complaint for me with all the Thrustmaster pedal sets. Whats cool about the TMX though is you can add on an upgraded Thrustmaster 3 pedal set separately. I hooked up the T3PA wide pedal set and it really took the TMX to the next level.

While I don’t immediately love the plastic laden pedal set on the TMX, they are serviceable without upgrading and the fact that they have a progressive brake makes me forgive them alot. Considering the price point these pedals are as good as can be expected.

TMX Pro Version vs Standard Version

The difference between the TMX standard version and the Pro version is the pedal set. Everything else hardware wide is exactly the same. In the TMX Pro version you get a 3 pedal set included instead of the standard 2 pedal set. The 3 pedal set is called the T3PA Wide pedal set which features a gas, brake, and clutch pedal.

The T3PA wide pedal set is a really nice addition not only because of the clutch, but because it adds on adjustable metal face plates and an adjustable conical brake module. These three features on the TMX Pro add a deeper level of immersion and allow you to customize your racing experience to your style.

The only drawbacks to the T3PA pedals are that they are not invertable like the T3PA Pro Pedals. Other than that, they are a huge upgrade over the TMX standard plastic pedals.

Does a 3 pedal Set Really Make A Difference?

Yes. The difference is enormous. Using the clutch pedal for most car types will help you accelerate quicker and stay in cars power band for longer. Additionally since you can adjust the brake mod on the T3PA’s, you can set it to a point right before your car locks the brakes. Doing this will help prevent lock up and help you brake later and more confidently into corner entries. I find this to be really helpful n games like Forza and Project Cars.

For a game like Dirt Rally, you can forego the clutch pedal and instead configure the pedal to be your hand brake. This makes drifting around sharp corners easier then trying to press down a button on the steering wheel while you are turning.

The Thrustmaster TMX is A Great Sim Racing Entry Level Wheel

One thing I like most about the Thrustmaster TMX wheel is it’s ability to use the eco-system from Thrustmaster. The TMX allows you to add on the TH8A shifter, and a 3 pedal set (T3PA Wide Pedals or T3PA Pro Pedals). This is something that you don’t get with the 458 Spider. This makes the TMX a really flexible solution for racers on a budget. You can always get the TMX now and then add on the components as your money allows. If you get the TMX Pro version then the T3PA wide set will come with it.

The TMX driving wheel however does not allow you to change out the actual wheel rim like the Thrustmaster TX. The TMX wheel rim is permanently attached and does not include the Thrustmaster Quick Release System. If you were looking for the ability to change rims, you would need to look at other options like the TX.

TMX Mounting Options

The TMX comes standard with a table clamp for mounting on a desk or table. There are wheel stands like, the Wheel Stand Pro, that also can mount a table clamp wheel.

Mounting Adapter for Cockpits

The wheel doesn’t naturally mount to cockpits or high end wheel stands, but there is a simple adapter you can get for like $25 that allows you to hard mount this wheel. The simple adapter screws into the bottom where the table clamp normally goes and then all of the standard Thrustmaster pre drilled holes will line up on your wheel mounting plate. Hooking up the adapter is super easy and is a great solution for mounting.

Multiple Compatibility – Xbox One and PC

Thrustmaster wheels always offer a great value by making their products have multiple compatibility. This racing wheel setup will work for both Xbox One and PC (Windows 10/8/7/Vista) and all racing games that support steering wheels. The Microsoft embedded software makes the wheel natively compatible in the Xbox One console’s menus.

My Best TMX Setup Recommendation

If you are in the market for a Thrustmaster steering wheel then chances are you are looking for a nice racing experience, more than a casual racer, but something that isn’t going to make you broke. The TMX is your best option for about $200.

My best recommendation for a starting set up would be the Thrustmaster TMX Pro Version . That will get you the wheel and a solid 3 pedal set (gas, brake, clutch) for just under $300. This would set you up with a decent rim, a good performing motor, and a 3 pedal set that includes a conical brake mod. You can find deals on Amazon to get this set for around $250 if you find the right deal.

Thrustmaster TMX Racing Wheel Review – Wrap Up

I am really impressed with the TMX. The build quality and the racing experience are impossible to beat at the price point.

This Thrustmaster wheel is significantly better than the 458 Spider because of its adjustable rotation, true force feedback, and ability to utilize the Thrustmaster eco-system. I actually think the motor is even better than the Logitech G920 which is a mid price wheel and performs a bit clunky due to its helical gearing. Ideally you can spend $200 now and then upgrade your pedals and shifter later, for a more immersive experience.

The TMX is no slouch when it comes to a good driving experience and I would highly recommend this as an entry level sim racing wheel for the Xbox One or PC. If you have the budget go for the TMX Pro upgrade to add the 3 pedal set. The 3 pedals and the conical brake mod make a hug difference in immersion and lap times.

Openwheeler Advanced Racing Seat Driving Simulator

This racing seat overall is a popular option on the market no matter if you race Playstation 4 Playstation 3, Playstation 2, Playstation 1, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Xbox, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Game Cube, N64, Sega or PC. They do a really good job of accommodating all of the different wheels by making special mounting plates and offering different versions of the seat depending on your need.

Able To Make Fine Adjustments For Comfort

This seat was engineered with the racer in mind. Nobody wants to play a racing game and get up with a sore back or stiff legs. They designed this seat so you can fit it to your body and play your racing games for hours at a time.

I would say that anyone between 4’5 and 6’8 would fit comfortably in this seat. There is no wait limit listed, but given my experience with reviewing racing seats, I would say no more than a 275 lb person should use this seat.

Wheels for Moving to Storage

While this seat doesn’t pack up very compact, it does however have a neat feature. It has wheels you can attach to the front under the pedals so you can lift up the back of the chair and easily push it around. This makes it very easy to move to a storage room or walk in closet.

Lumbar Support

This seat also has the option to add on a lumbar support pad. This will help make your back more comfortable for longer hours or make the chair more suitable if you already have a bad back. This is one of the only cockpit chairs that offers a lumbar support pad made for the chair.

Gear Shifter Mount

Depending on which version of the seat you buy, they don’t all come with the gear sifter mount. If you don’t have a shifter now and want to add on later, you can get the gearbox mount separate.

One of the best deign features of the mount is that it can be mounted on the left or right side of the seat frame and you can move it towards or away from the seat.

The OpenWheeler Advanced is definitely a great racing seat. It is one of the most comfortable sim racing chairs on the market. It is priced competitively and I would rate it as one of the best in it’s class. The three things that stand out most to me about this seat: comfort, stability, and the color options.

This package includes the Thrustmaster Servo Base, the T3PA Wide Pedal Set, and the 28 GT Leather rim. All 3 of these products are already reviewed on this site and when combined aveage over 4.5 stars.

This package is by far the most complete bundle put out by Thrustmaster and was most likely offered in response to the Logitech G920 racing wheel which offers a leather rim and a 3 pedal set also. If you are wondering how the Thrustmaster VG TX Racing Wheel Leather Edition Premium compares to the Logitech G920, I will cover that by the end of this review.

Lets a take a good hard look at the latest Thrustmaster Wheel:

As this is a combination of 3 products let’s break it into 3 sets of specs:

TX Servo Base Specs

270 to 900 Degrees of Rotation (DOR), compatible with Xbox One and PC, compatible with the Thrustmaster eco-system (wheel-rims, pedal sets, and shifter), force feedback, vibration, upgradeable firmware (via PC compatibility), no latency, heart technology (friction free), Xbox One guide button, table clamp, and pre-threaded holes for mounting on all major cockpit and wheelstand brands. This Wheelbase is XRP rated 5.0 in our previous review.

T3PA Wide Pedal Set Specs

Feels Awesome To Race With

I have this racing setup mounted on my Playseat Evolution and everything about the TX Premium leather edition is awesome. The force feedback is strong, smooth, quiet, and feels fantastic delivered through the leather wrapped rim. The paddle shifters make a nice “click” when engaged and spring back really strong into place.

The pedals are extremely responsive and you can really feel them pushing back against your feet. I have the conical rubber brake module hooked up and engaged at about 85% and it does a great job of simulating real brake pressure. My only complaint with the pedals is that the throw is a bit long on the clutch, but all in all…

Multiple Compatibility – Xbox One and PC

Thrustmaster Wheels always does a great job adding value by making their products have multiple compatibility. This driving setup will work for both Xbox One and PC and all racing games that support steering wheels.

This set is also compatible with the Thrustmaster TH8A Shifter, the T3PA Pro Pedal Set, the Ferrari F1 Rim, the Ferrari EVO 599XX Rim, and the Ferrari GTE Challenge Rim. That’s what makes this package so dynamic it comes standard with premium components, but is still upgradeable should you want to add to it.

Bundle and Save

This package is a GREAT VALUE because if you were to buy these products separately it would cost you more money. When you buy them as the VG TX Racing Wheel Leather Premium Edition you save a few bucks for sure. I definitely commend Thrustmaster for recognizing this and putting this consumer friendly package together.

These two steering wheels have a lot more in common then there Xbox One and PC compatibility. They both have leather rims, 3 pedal sets (gas, brake, & clutch), both have true force feedback, and they both are in the mid-price range for racing wheels.

So what are the differences between these two racing wheels?

Well the major difference is that the Thrustmaster wheel has lots of upgrade options, while the Logitech only offers a six speed shifter add on. The Thrustmaster pedal set also has a 16 bit input, while Logitech only has an 8 bit. This gives the Thrustmaster pedals much more accuracy and feel. Lastly the Thrustmaster force feedback feels slightly stronger and it has better internal components using sensors instead of helical gearing like the G920. This will make the TX feel stronger, last longer, and be a bit more durable.

I have been extremely happy with my TX wheel on the Xbox One and it is such a great value for the performance it delivers.

Thrustmaster TX Racing Wheel Leather Edition Premium Review

When Thrustmaster released the TX in 2013 I rated it 4 stars and I had said if this package included the T3PA Wide Pedal set it would make it 5 stars. Well now this is essentially that package with the T3PA wide pedals and one of the top rated Thrustmaster wheel add on rims.

Aura Pro Bass Shaker Specs

The Aura Pro Bass Shaker is 50-watts, has an impedance of 4 Ohms, and has a 40 Hz resonance frequency. They are encased in metal and measure about 5 inches in width and 2 inches in height. It is classified as a transducer, not a speaker, because it doesn’t transmit volume it transmits vibration.

Why Do You Need A Tactile Audio Transducer

As humans we have two senses to perceive sound. We hear sound and we can also feel it, particularly low frequencies. In normal circumstances it takes a large set of speakers to move the air enough for us to feel low frequency vibration, like a club or live concert.

A tactile transducer replicates the feeling range of audio more directly than through air movement, it does it by directly vibrating whatever it is attached to. the perception of low frequency is actually greater than what a large speaker can create, plus it removes the sound. For example if you were using an Aura Bass Shaker Pro with a pair of headphones on, you would still perceive the concert lvel feel of the audio, but without any volume produced for anyone else to hear.

The feeling you get from an immersive movie, music, or gaming experience is AMAZING! When you are watching a movie and a building collapses and your couch whole couch shakes, your engagement with the movie increases. Same thing when you are gaming…when you are playing a FPS game and you ring out a blast from your shot gun and you feel your gaming seat buck in your rear end, your body starts feeling like it’s really in the action. You will think you’re in a war zone!

I Use Mine Mostly for Gaming

While I do have 2 of them in my couch and use it to make every single movie better, my primary use is on my Xbox racing seat. I have 2 aura bass shakers hooked up in stereo on the bottom of my Playseat Evolution and whenever my car clips the rumble strips my seat shakes on the proper side. You don’t really hear the low end bass frequencies…you just feel them!

How to Hook Up a Bass Shaker

These are not standalone self amplified units. They need to be powered and wired to your system. The best way to power them is with a sub-woofer amplifier, and not a standard amplifier or pre-amp. You want a sub-woofer amp because they have a crossover built in that allows you to filter out high end frequency and concentrate on the low end bass frequencies.

I use a Dayton Audio SA70 amplifier on each of my Aura Pro’s. So each amp powers one shaker. Because they are 4 Ohms, you can wire two shakers to one amp providing you are choosing the correct wattage amp.

I use a dedicated amp for each bass shaker because I wanted my Xbox racing setup to be stereo, meaning have left and right vibrations to coordinate with my games and movies.

Note: ensure that the sub-amp you use is capable of a 4 ohm load. The Aura Bass Shakers are 50 watts at 4 ohms, but that could change based on the number that are wired together if you do them in a series.

Wiring

Wiring the Aura Bass shakers is as easy as wiring a normal speaker.

They have positive and negative terminals that have a cap you pull out and then sneak the speaker wire through. The wire will fit really snug and secure on the terminals, wiring couldn’t be any easier.

Placement for the Best Bass Feel

Placement of the shakers is really important. When you place the Aura Bass Shakers onto a surface you will want to make sure, you are fastening them on tight because they vibrate and you are securing them to something that will maximize its impact.

For example, most couches have a main beam that span the length of the couch, you would want to mount them directly on that. You can see on the right how I have them mounted to my gaming seat. They are directly underneath the seat and they are in contact with a main board I built that touches the frame. When bass vibrates the shaker, not only does the seat shake, but the vibration travels all the way down to my feet on the racing pedals.

Installation really depends on where you are going to be putting these items and what you will be mounting them to. In my case, to installation was as easy as putting a plywood plank along the bottom of the chair and attaching these to the plank. Each Aura pro shaker has 4 holes on the bottom of the transducer for mounting.

Whatever you are mounting the shakers to you may also want to consider getting rubber isolators to ensure whatever they are mounted on keeps the vibration isolated and not transferring to the floor. I use the Isolate It Sorbothane pads. Once you add isolation pads to your couch, racing seat, or chair, the aura pro bass shakers pack even more of a mean punch.

If you are weighing your options for a steering wheel for your Xbox One or your PC, the G920 Driving Force wheel is considered a mid to high end wheel. This thing will deliver realistic steering and pedal action for the latest racing games.

In this review we will breakdown the specifics of the latest offering from Logitech and see if this wheel can deliver a simulated racing experience.

This is not the first wheel made by Logitech (they have been making wheels for years), but the G920 is the first steering wheel they have made for the Xbox One and after announcing 6 years ago they were done with racing peripherals. This wheel is a follow up to the Logitech G27 racing wheel, which is one of the highest rated wheels on Amazon (4.5 stars and 1200 customer reviews), but was never made compatible for Xbox gamers.

At the time of this review there are two other steering wheel options at a similar price point, the Thrustmaster TX ($450) and The Mad Catz Pro Racing Wheel ($375).

So for about 350 bucks, does the Logitech wheel compare to the Thrustmaster TX and The Mad Catz Racing Wheel? I will answer that question by the end of this review.

Let’s get into the Logitech G920 Driving Force Steering Wheel. This is a mid to high end driving wheel for anyone looking for a simulated and immersive racing experience. The price point ($350) is set competitively based on the features it offers. Here are some of the Logitech steering wheel specs.

The G920 is Very Similar To The G27 in look And Feel

3 Stainless Steel pedals (gas, brake, clutch), Hand stitched leather wheel, duel motor force feedback, semi- automatic paddle shifters, d-pad and on wheel controls, and helical gearing. If you are a previous G27 owner, then this wheel offers a fairly comparable experience, with build and quality.

This wheel and pedal set feels exactly like the Logitech G27, except that it doesn’t come standard with a shifter (you have to purchase the Driving Force Shifter separately for $60). What you get in the box is the wheel and pedals, a USB power supply, and the user manuals.

The Wheel And Forced Feedback Feel Great

The wheel, which is a D-shape, delivers extremely quiet, smooth, and strong force feedback and always maintain a little tightness, which helps you keep control.

The wheel also offers 900 degrees of rotation which means you can turn the wheel around 2.5X, hand over hand on wide turns, just like a real car.

Quality Construction And Built Durable

The wheel shaft contains solid steel ball bearings and you can tell the wheel is extremely durable and built to take a beating. The stainless steel paddle shifters give a nice click sound when they are engaged. It also has helical gears that are modeled after automotive transmissions to reduce unwanted noise and vibration. The wheel rim is wrapped in real hand-stitched leather that offers a nice look and comfortable grip.

The wheel and pedal set both weigh in around 5 lbs and are constructed of plastic and metal.

3 Responsive Pedals

The pedals contain a gas, brake and clutch standard. The brake contains a non-linear rubber mod inside, which simulates progressive pressure-sensitive brake system in a real car. You can also reposition the pedal faces to make heel-toe maneuvers easier. There are also rubber feet on the bottom of the pedal set for hard surfaces and a retractable carpet grip system to help your pedals stay in place if they are not being mounted to a cockpit.

Easy Access To Buttons And Controls

The buttons are all accessible right on the wheel (where as the G27 has them on the shifter). The wheel contains all the standard Xbox One buttons for easy access, “A”, “X”, “B”, “Y”, start, menu, LB, RB, a d-pad, and your main Xbox button.

Having easy access to buttons is a feature not to be overlooked. For most racing games you need to be able to access the handbrake with a button click. If you configure your handbrake to the “B” button you can easily slide your right hand thumb onto the button while you are steering.

Add On a Shifter for More Immersive Racing

The Logitech G920 comes with the clutch pedal, but not a shifter. You can however buy the six speed h-pattern shifter, The Logitech Driving Force Shifter, which is sold separately for $60. The shifter is wrapped in leather and has a nice feel to it with a short throw, kinda like what you would get in a high performance sports car. You can read our Driving Force Shifter review here.

Ability to Adjust Sensitivity

Everybody likes their force feedback (FFB) a little bit different. You can adjust the sensitivity of the wheel by plugging it into a PC and changing the internal settings. This will allow you to turn up or reduce the strength of the FFB. Even if you are using it on an Xbox One, you can still plug your Logitech wheel into a PC via USB and change your settings. Changing these settings can be particularly helpful to customize the wheel to your preferences for the most part once you get the setting you like you only need to set it once and it will be programmed in.

A Few Limitations on the Logitech Steering Wheel

This wheel option doesn’t offer detachable rim options or alternate pedal sets like the Thrustmaster TX, however the stock rim on here is far superior to the TX Italia’s stock rim. There is also a bit to be desired in the sensitivity of the pedals, the brake comes across stiff and the accelerator not quite as sensitive as what i am used to.

All of the Xbox One racing games (expect for Need for Speed Rivals), offer racing wheel support.

Mounts On Most Cockpits

Because this is going to be an extremely popular wheel all of the big brand cockpit and wheel stand makers are making accommodations to mount the G920 wheel. The 3 most popular brands: Playseat, Open Wheeler, and Wheel Stand Pro, are already making products that mount the G920 Driving Force Wheel. It seems though that Logitech recommends the Playseat Evolution on their site.

Of course if you weren’t interested in mounting the wheel on a cockpit or stand, the G920 comes with the option for table mounting your wheel and the pedals contain some options for keeping them stable on the floor.

A Piece Of Mind Warranty

Logitech steering Wheels have a 2-Year Limited Hardware Warranty. I have never had to call Logitech customer service, but looking around the net it seems that they have outstanding customer service.

Compared To Steering Wheels at The Same Price Point

Compared to the Mad Catz Racing Wheel $375) the Logitech G920 ($350) is almost the same price, so which one is a better value?

While both products feature helical gearing the Logitech steering wheel is the easy answer. The force feedback in the G920 is not only smoother, stronger, and quieter the fact that it comes standard with a clutch makes it a better value. The pedals on the G920 also feel better than the Mad Catz pedals.

The only thing I like better about the Mad Catz wheel is that I like the way it looks…it certainly looks more like a race car steering wheel, but let’s face it…

The Mad Catz product just doesn’t cut it and I would strongly advise steering clear of it.

Compared to the Thrustmaster TX Leather Eition ($450) the Logitech G920 ($350) is a few bucks less, so is it worth the savings?

Well that depends, there are two different versions of the TX: the Leather Edition and the F458 Italia Edition. Both versions have the same servo base wheel motor, but vary in the options you get.

The G920 and the TX steering wheels drive and feel somewhat similar, but the TX edges out the 920 in performance and quality. Both deliver smooth, strong, and quiet force feedback to create a simulated immersive driving experience, but the brushless dual belt drive motor on the TX is of a slightly higher caliber.

The G920 is a better value than the Thrustmaster F458 Italia Edition, simply because it comes standard with a 3 pedal set and has a better rim.

The TX leather Edition, has a 3 pedal set and a leather rim, similar to the G920. Where both the Thrustmaster TX wheels are really better than Logitech is the upgrade options and the TX wheelbase. The G920 only has an add on 6 speed shifter to add on, while Thrustmaster offers multiple wheel rims, pedal sets, and a 7 speed shifter. I also feel like the Thrustmaster wheel base is a bit stronger, smoother and quieter with the Force feedback and the pedals are a bit more responsive with a higher bit resolution.

The G920 Logitech Steering Wheel is a Best Seller

When it comes to wheels for the Xbox One and PC alot of people gravitate towards the 920. I think what people like most about it is the 2 year warranty, the low price for a mid grade driving system with a 3 pedal set, and getting the next gen racing peripheral from the same company that manufactured the classic G27.

The 920 has done remarkably well in sales and despite it’s handful of drawbacks it delivers a quality gaming experience that will make you feel good about your purchase.

Logitech G920 Driving Force Review – My Final thoughts

The Logitech G920 Steering Wheel is fantastic. This Steering wheel definitely offers an immersive simulated experience for playing Xbox One and PC racing games and is the best option for racing wheels with a stock setup. The fact for $350 for the wheel and pedals and another $60 for the shifter, you have spent less than $500 and you have a wheel, pedals w/ a clutch, and the shifter.

If you are looking for steering wheel and pedal set, that is out of the box a great experience with only a shifter to add on, this is an outstanding racing wheel choice.

These pedals look and feel exactly like the highly acclaimed Thrustmaster T500 pedals, that come with the T500 rim. This is definitely the pedal site we have all been waiting for Thrustmaster to deliver!

These T3pa pedals are all metal, feel really good on your feet, and offer you some nice options for setting them up for your personal preference. Thrustmaster designed these to emulate automotive standards and really stepped it up a notch engineering this pedal set.

Thrustmaster’s aim here was building a more robust standalone pedal set than the previously released T3PA’s. These pedals look and feel like they were built to last and withstand a beating! They are heavy and really feel like a quality product the moment you take them out of the box.

T3PA Pro Pedals Are Compatible With Multiple Wheels

The pro pedal set is compatible with all of the Thrustmaster steering wheels released in the T-series (TX Racing Wheel Ferrari 458 Italia Edition / TX Leather Premium Edition / T300 RS / T500 RS / T300 Ferrari GTE / / Ferrari F1 Wheel Integral T500 ). For Xbox One folks, The These pedals feel pretty damn authentic and weigh about 15 lbs. The pedals and all of the internal and external parts are metal and the large metal footrest with non-slip grating is an awesome touch. The pedal face plates look to be the same as the T3PA Wide Pedal Set, but everything else is re-hauled and re-engineered nicely.

First it allows for 2 different user positions; Floor-mounted position (F1-style) and Suspended position (GT-style). Second, you can move each of the 3 pedals spacing for 3 positions/pedal), also adjust the incline for each pedal (2 positions/pedal), and third you can adjust the height for each pedals (4 positions for the gas and 3 for the clutch and brake pedals).

T3PA Pro Gas Pedal

The Gas pedal has a nice throw length and a decent spring in it. The throw seems slightly longer than the T3PA Wide pedal set enabling more precise inputs and better control.

The Brake Pedal Has Options

The brake pedal has some awesome options so you can really customize this pedal set to your preferences. With this pedal set you get 2 different optional brake mods that you can install beneath the brake pedal. When you adjust the position of the mods, you can change the pressure force on the brake.

These are your 3 options for the brake:

NO MOD:: This is using the pedal set as is. You can adjust the brake pedal pressure force between 15 lbs. and 22 lbs.

SPRING BRAKE MOD: Contains an additional compression spring and you can adjust the brake pressure forcebetween 31 lbs. and 35 lbs .

CONICAL RUBBER BRAKE MOD: Composed of a conical stop made from industrial-grade high-density rubber (like the T3PA wide Pedal set features), for true ultra-progressive resistance at the end of the pedal’s throw range. You can adjust the brake pressure force between 44 lbs. and 66 lbs

In all three instances you can also adjust the range of travel of the brake. Having brake options is really a HUGE deal, because that is the pedal you need the most to control your car.

You can also opt to add a load cell brake, which is what I have. You can get the load cell from Ricmotech and install it in the T3PA Pedals yourself or buy the pedals with the load cell brake installed. You can read more about the load cell brake here.

T3PA Pro Clutch Pedal

The Clutch pedal has a long throw length for a clutch and the spring back return is a bit light for a clutch, but I think that was the only option Thrustmaster has because the pedals can be inverted. The clutch pedal leaves a little to be desired, but at the price point of the pedal set it is serviceable.

T3PA Pro Pedal Set Will Mount On Cockpit’s And Wheel Stands

While the pedals, themselves are plug in and play, you may want to mount them to a wheel stand or cockpit for maximum stability.

I mounted the pedals to my Playseat Evolution. The holes didn’t exactly line up with the pedal plate, like the T3PA wide pedal set did, but I was eventually able to finagle it on with some strength. Once it was on it felt extremely stable and tight.

If you are playing with your wheel mounted to a table and have these pedals on the floor, they will slide minimally, but the fact that they are 15 lbs keeps em pretty stable.

T3PA Pedals | Pros vs Cons

PROS:

Look and feel like a high quality product built to last
The brake is an improvement from the stock TX F458 pedals and the T3PA Wide Pedals
Pedals can be inverted…I personally think the GT style feels more simulated
Pedal spacing adjustments…you can put your gas and brake close to each other

CONS:

Not easily inverted, the holes don’t exactly line up, and instructions are vague
The clutch could use some more spring pressure
The face plate on the brake pedal should be wider like a real brake
Thrustmaster disclaimer states do not use these with bare feet or just socks as a pinching hazard exists

T3PA Pro Pedals vs T3PA Wide Pedals

There are 3 main differences between these two T3PA pedal sets.

The PRO pedal set is made of all metal, while the Wide Pedal Set is made mostly of plastic. The Pro Pedal Set has more adjustability including inversion and multiple brake mods, while the Wide Pedal Set has only 1 brake mode (conical rubber stopper) and only allows you to adjust the face plates. Lastly the price. The Pro deal set is $150 and the Wide Pedal set is $100.

Thrustmaster VG T3PA-PRO 3-Pedal Add-On Set Wrap Up

Hands down this is the best pedal set on the market at this price point. These are an enormous upgrade for most stock pedal sets in the Thrustmaster T-series and even the T3PA Wide Pedals. Despite the fact, that this pedal set can be a pain in the ass to invert, the quality construction and feel of these pedals on your feet make this pedal set worth every penny.

Every racing game you play with the Thrustmaster T3PA Pro Pedals, will immediately become more immersive and simulated simply because you have so many options to set these up exactly how you prefer. I am usually pretty stingy about assigning a 5 star rating, but this t3pa pedal set is a no brainer, especially because I think they nailed the price point!

It offers a simulated gear-shifting feel with 2 shift-plates included: “H”-pattern (7+1) and Sequential (+/-).  It has all metal internal parts, metal gear stick and a metal clamping system.

Top Notch Construction And Quality Shifter

From the moment you lift this piece of equipment out of the box it looks and feels like they took this shifter right out of a real race car.

This thing is solid metal and has some good weight to it (it’s over 5lbs). The chrome on the gear stick and the H pattern shifter plate looks incredibly sexy and is really polished. The optional sequential shifter plate is made of black plastic.

Just shifting the gears in my hands while holding the base, I can feel how easy it shifts with only a bit of touch and yet it still moves firm. It moves really natural.

The shifter knob unscrews easy and as a bonus you can replace it with a different knob from a car parts store to customize your look. The metal clamping system looks solid and has black plastic turn knobs to tighten the grips.

There is USB wire included for connecting to a PC as well as cord for hooking it up to your racing wheel.

The Internal Mechanisms Are Built To Last

Thrustmaster made the TH8A to stand the test of time. They included all metal parts inside and used H.E.A.R.T. Hall Effect AccuRate Technology. This technology  means that over time the precision will not decrease, because it uses a contactless magnetic sensor. There is no tact switch and no potentiometer which gives this shifter unlimited product lifespan.

The TH8A Feels Authentic When Racing

For this review I used the Thrustmaster TX with the T3PA Pro Pedals, and mounted the TH8A shifter to the Playseat Evolution and played Forza Horizon 2 and Project Cars.

If you are using an Xbox One, with a TX wheel base, then you will need to plug the shifter into the wheel and the wheel will need to have the “V47 firmware update” for it to work properly”.

H-Pattern Gear Plate

I started with the H-pattern shifter plate and I can’t lie…I was horrible, but could tell immediatly this was a game changer . Having 8 gates available I kept throwing the car into the wrong gear, so it takes some getting used to. Once you get your technique down pat, this thing is gonna be one of your favorite racing accessories.

Shifting the gears feels really nice and smooth. The shifter moves with such little force. The throw of the gears feels a bit too long for my preference, but it may just take some getting adjusted. Once you get acclimated and get your timing down…

If you were looking to compare this shifter to a shifter in a car the biggest difference is the lack of pressure that you get when moving from one gear to the next. A real car shifter has a bit more snap to it when you can feel the gear lock in. Don’t get me wrong it snaps, just not like a real car.

Sequential Gear Plate

After some H pattern shifting, I gave the black plastic sequential shifter plate a shot, which switches out really easy.

Sequential shifting was much of the same feeling; shifter slides nice and easy, but doesn’t give the gear shift sensation you get from a real car. There is one big difference though here and that is that the throw shortens up.

If you are just starting out and if not used a clutch and shifter before  in your racing setup, it may be best to start with the sequential plate, get a feel for it, and then move into the H-pattern plate. I think it’s pretty awesome they have both options for this shifter! you can also get the Sequential Shifter Knob which is adds a bit more height to the shifter and is ideal for sequential shifting.

The simple act of shifting the TH8A and using the T3PA clutch will take your racing immersion experience up about 1000 notches…don’t get me wrong it doesn’t feel exactly like a real car shifter, but if you don’t have a shifter hooked up then you MUST get this.

The one thing that stood out to me was the quality. The entire time racing and having my hand on the shifter, it felt like I had a quality product in my palm!

The TH8A Offers Plenty Of Adjustability

The quality and craftsmanship of the shifter are OUTSTANDING. I love how it was designed to last with using a contactless magnetic sensor. There is lots of adjustability including increasing the shifting resistance, changing the shift plate position and rotation, and even removing the clamping system for mounting on a cockpit.

If you have any technical knowledge you can open it up and shorten the throw of the gates as well, but I wouldn’t advice that if you are not technically inclined. There are better options like getting a short shift kit mod which will reduce the throw by about 35%.

One of my favorite things on the TH8A is the ability to change the knob for something more customized…who doesn’t like putting their own style on their racing setup. Checkout universal stick shift knobs here!

Thrustmaster TH8A Complaints

Not really much to complain about, but if I am being nit-picky:

1. The cords may be a bit short for some peoples setups
2. The gear shift throw is a bit long
3. The lack of gear lock like a real car may leave some experienced racers looking for a more simulated feel
4. I wish the black plastic sequential plate was chrome like the H-pattern plate
5. This shifter is actually not new, Thrustmaster just repackaged the Th8RS

The TH8A Gearbox Shifter Is Super Compatibile

This TH8A shifter add on is compatible with multiple wheel bases:

– Thrustmaster: TX, TMX, T500RS, T300RS, T300 Ferrari GTE

This thing is super compatible: PC (works with every wheel on the market), PS3, PS4 and Xbox One.

Note To Xbox One Users: People have asked how come the TH8A shifter doesn’t work without the pedals even after a hard reset of the Xbox? You have to connect to Xbox live and install an update for your shifter to work. Once it updates  you should be good to go and not even need to be on Xbox Live anymore.

Mounting Compatibility

The clamping system (detachable) that is included is adjustable to 360 degrees and the clamp itself is really strong and will definitely holed the shifter in place on a table while you beat on it in a race. I would imagine that overtime, you may have to tighten the screw every once in awhile. There is a nice piece of black rubber at the top of the clamp that will help protect the surface of whatever you are clamping to.

If you are looking to mount into to a mount it to a Playseat then you will need to pick up special mounting hardware, so that you can fix the shifter into place on your gaming chair.

The Thrustmaster shifter is definitely worth the money and a high quality product. I think it really adds to the immersion experience and makes any racing game much more engaging. One of it’s greatest assets is that it was built to last, so if you are gonna spend the money, you will get years of value out of this shifter!

What Is The Playseat Evolution Seat Made Out Of?

It is built out of reinforced steel tubing and was engineered with adjustability in mind. The base of the chair is really solid and doesn’t have any wobble to it.

The chair itself is wrapped in a vinyl upholstery and it has the look and feel of leather. There is some really nice detail in the stitching of the word Playseat at the top of the headrest. The stiching around the chair also looks really clean.

There foam cushion that you sit on can be removed and replaced and has some velcro on the bottom to prevent it from sliding while you are racing.

The back of the chair is a bit hard to fold down at first, but will definitely lossen up after some use.

Out of the box it took me about 45 minutes to put together and all of the tools, screws, and parts were included in the box. The directions were mostly pictures and easy to follow.

Comfort, Adjustability, and Storage

As Comfortable As Sitting In My Car

I find the Playseat Evolution to extremely comfortable. I can race for hours without feeling like my back, my knees, or my butt hurts. The cushion that you sit on has a few springs underneath it so that it can adjust to your body weight really nicely. My knees also don’t hit the bottom of the wheel base no matter how aggressive I drive or stomp my clutch.

Overall these seat is really comfortable for adults and teenagers. I would say that anyone between 6’2 and 5’0 should be able to fit comfortably in this seat.

It Has A Lot Of Adjustability To Accomadate Various Sizes Of Peaople

As a six foot man I was a little nervous about having a seat that is to small, but the adjustments make it perfect and my my friends who are shorter fit the seat nice as well and find it comfortable. so overall this seat can accommodate a lot of different heights and sizes.

The gaming chair was engineered with adjustments in mind. The tubing slides in out smoothly allowing you to adjust how far the pedals are from the chair or how far your wheel is from the chair. You can also adjust the tilt of the pedals for what degree you find most comfortable from the floor. There are 5 differnt angles to choose. The height of the steering wheel is also adjustable.

Playseat also made a seat slider for the Evolution, which I don’t own, but i do think make for a nice addition if you have alot of different people using your gaming chair like your wife and kids.

Easy Fold Down For Storage

The Evolution also comes equipped with Playseat’s patented fold down system for easy and fast storage. The top of the seat folds down nicely and when you slide the wheel and pedals towards the seat it is very compact.

I have mine on carpet and I can easily pull it around the house with ease, If my girlfriend wants it out of my living room, she just drags into another room. It is very lite and easy to move.

If you are planning on putting the seat on a wood floor I highly recommend you also get the Playseat Floor Mat for underneath it to protect your wood flooring.

Does The The Center Column Effect Your Feet On the Pedals?

No! Initially I had the same concern, but i have been racing on this for over 1 year and have had no issues with the center column impeding my ability to hit the gas, clutch, and brake. It isn’t in the way at all and when you are racing, you don’t even notice or feel the center column.

The Evolution comes with a variety of branding options. You can of course get the standard which only has Playseat branding, but there are other options to match your favorite racing titles. These are the 3 most popular, but there are others as well:

These special editions tend to add a bit more to the price, but they are done really well and make for a beautiful looking racing seat.

A Few Playseat Evolution Drawbacks

I don’t have to many, but being I am tall I sometimes have a little difficulty getting out of it. Just weird to maneuver my legs and lift my self up from a seat so low to the ground. My short friends don’t seem to have this issue.

I also wouldn’t trust letting anyone sit in this over 300 lbs.

Playseat Evolution Review- Wrap Up

I think this is the best seat on the market if you are looking for a traditional bucket style racing seat. The chair was constructed with quality and comfort in mind and it really enhances your simulated racing experience. If you are still clamping your racing wheel to a table, the Playseat Evolution will change your entire racing experience and instantly make any racing game better.

I have made several cusomizations like adding vibration in the seat and a headphones mount. Once you drill into the frame you void your 1 year warranty, but that is to be expected like most products when you make customizations.
