How much did Fanatec downgrade the ClubSport V2’s? and…How does it compare against against the Thrustmaster TX?

By the end of this review I will have both of these questions answered as well as whether or not the Fanatec CSL Elite bundle is worth a look for racing on your XBox One console.

Fanatec CSL Elite Steering Wheel and Pedals Review

The CSL Elite is the second bundle offering from Fanatec, the first is ClubSport V2 a super high end wheelbase, rim and pedal set, goes for a whopping $1,400. The CSL Elite offers a mid tier option with a wheel, rim, and pedal set for $640. So the CSL bundle costs 55% less the V2 bundle, but it is not 55% less of product…

Unboxing, First Impressions, and Video Review

While I mainly focus on this bundles ability to deliver a quality racing experience on the Xbox 1, it is also compatible on the PC which I did not test. I ran all of my testing with Forza Motorsport 6 and Assetto Corsa on the X Box One console

Lets break down and review each piece of the bundle.

CSL Wheelbase Review for Xbox One

Specs

1080 degrees of rotation, Rev lights (which don’t currently function on Xbox One), brushless servo motor, quick release system, single belt drive, 1080 degrees of rotation, 2 shifter ports, a pedal port, a handbrake port, mode putton for switching between Xbox One and PC, a power button, upgradeable firmware, and a table clamp.

Good Quality and Durability

The CSL wheel base is encased in plastic with a nicely designed front cover. While the plastic feels thin and inexpensive it does the job for protecting the wheel motor and at this price point you can’t expect the same aluminum encasing on the ClubSport V2.

The wheel base is fairly heavy and has a nicely machined metal mechanism for connecting your steering wheel rim.

There is a vent on the back of the wheel base (pictured above) and two slits on the top to push air out when the fan is running to prevent the motor from overheating.

After racing for an hour or two I was surprised at how loud the fan was and how long it stayed on. The wheel base itself stayed very cool, but It makes me wonder about how long the fan inside is going to last if it is under duress. While I did not see any performance issues it’s certainly something I will keep my eyes on.

Great Force Feedback and Decent Vibration on the Xbox

The force feedback is strong and smooth and you can tell that there is quality technology inside. Overall the motor does a great job of simulating the traction forces through cornering and gives off a nice feel of how your car is performing. I would say that you get 80% of the feedback strength of the Fanatec V2, 15% stronger than the Thrustmaster TX, and 25% stronger than the Logitech G920.

Although force feedback was fantastic there were instances when cornering at high speeds I felt the wheel didn’t return to center the way I felt it should. It’s not that it didn’t rotate back, but on a wheel like the Thrustmaster TX the wheel snaps back on you to center just as it would in a real car in certain situations/

The movement of the wheel while smooth didnt always feel natural, which was especially noticeable is Assetto Corsa. The best way I can describe it is at times I felt like I was moving the wheel back towards center instead of the motor giving me a centering spring effect.

The amount of vibration given off by the CSL wheel base leaves a bit to be desired, but in all fairness all the competing wheels at this price point I have the same complaint about. The one difference here on CSL Elite though was that I felt the vibration was a bit loud and at times felt choppy. The wheel base was slapping against my wheel plate on my cockpit, but that might be my fault for how I mounted it (I used two screws instead of 3).

Rev Light Functionality is Limited on Xbox One

The Rev light meter does not show revs or shift indicators on the Xbox One and only works on PC. The only time the rev light indicator works with your Xbox One is when you are setting your brake force on your pedal set. This is not an issue with the Fanatec wheel itself, but the Microsoft protocols in the Xbox don’t currently allow for that functionality.

If you are only racing on Xbox One, you will never need to hit the “mode” button. The wheel starts off in Xbox mode and you will never need to change it unless you are updating your drivers on the PC.

Mounting Options – To Hard Mount You May Have to Drill

I used the pre-drilled holes in the bottom of the wheelbase to mount it to a PlaySeat Evolution. I actually had to drill into the wheel plate in order to mount it correctly. I only drilled two holes (left and right), however there is a third hole I would recommend drilling which is the mounting hole in the front center. This will help you not get the slapping noise like I experienced.

Aside from hard mounting the CSL Elite comes with a table clamp. This will allow you to mount the wheel base to a table or desk. While I did clamp it to a table, I did not test it with racing. I would imagine like most table clamps it will require tightening between races especially given the strength of the force feedback from the motor.

My best advice is to always hard mount your wheel base if you have the ability to. Of course with this wheel though it may require you to drill. For me the holes didnt line up on any of my seats or wheel stands.

Compatibility

The CSL Elite Wheel Base works on both the Xbox One console and the PC. It is compatible with all of the Fanatec rims, pedal sets, shifters, and add-ons when you run it on a PC. If you are running it on an Xbox, you must have an Xbox One rim.

For shifters and handbrake options on the Xbox One, the functionality will be dependent upon the game. For example Forza Motorsport 6 does not have handbrake support, but DiRT Rally does.

Fanatec P1 Steering Wheel Rim Review

Specs

30 cm diameter, LED digital display, can store 5 different pre-sets, Xbox home button, Xbox buttons (A,B,X,Y, menu, settings, RSB, LSB, RT, LT), analog Stick D-pad, settings button, 2 large metal paddle shifters, rubber texturized grip, and quick release system.

Good Quality and Durability

The wheel is built very strong and has a nice metal center column. The buttons are labeled for Xbox and pertrude slightly off the metal. The LED display at the top of the rim has a plastic cover and in inlayed into the rim. The textured rubber rim isn’t very impressive, but it is servicable and does the job. The type of material they used will probably make your hands feel a bit sweaty after an hour of racing.

The analog stick d-pad moves nice, my only worry is that because it’s a stick and not a traditional d-pad you could easily catch your clothing on it and break it.

My biggest concerns around the quality and durability are with the quick release system. This is a simplified version of what Fanatec uses on their ClubSport V2. I found it required some extra strength to get the wheel rim on the wheel base…

I wasn’t sure if I pushed the wheel all the way on or perhaps maybe I pushed it too far. After some troubleshooting I tried tightening all 5 of the Allen screws on the center column and the 4 allen screws on the back of the wheel where it connects with the base. After that the P1 wheel rim started working and getting power. I spoke to Fanatec about this issue and the said it was an issue with a material they used in the pre-production models (like the one I received) and it is already resolved in the production wheel bases.

All in all for a quick release system it wasn’t very quick and requires some strength, but how often do you change your wheel rim though?…probably not too often anyway, so not that big of a deal.

Force Feedback Effects

The wheel rim is pretty light which means it reacts well to force feedback. You can feel some micro-vibrations in your hands through the rubber grip, but not as much as you would get with a padded leather rim.

Innovative Functionality with Custom Settings

I love the LED display and the ability to store 5 custom settings. I was able to save settings for both Assetto Corsa and Forza 6 without having to worry about writing any of my settings down. I found myself adjsuting the force feedback and brake force in the middle of races which was AWESOME. This is a great feature because you can make on the fly adjsutments without having to leave a race to change your game settings.

The paddle shifters are at the perfect distance from your fingers, maybe the best placement I have felt on a mid priced wheel. The one thing I don’t love is they dont make a nice click sound when engaged. I found myself missing some downshifts on corner entries when I had thought I had engaged the left paddle shifter.

The button placement is fine and accessible, but I much rather prefer higher button placement so you can move your thumbs horizonatlly to press a button while racing. For these you need to move your thumb horizontal and then down…this makes accessing the handbrake button difficult in certain types of turns.

Compatibility

The Fanatec P1 Xbox One Steering Wheel Rim is compatible on the Xbox One and PC. It will work on both the CSL Elite and ClubSport V2 wheelbase.

CSL Elite Pedals with Load Cell Brake Review

Specs

3 pedal set (gas, brake, clutch), 16 bit resolution throttle, 16 bit resolution clutch, 12 bit resolution load cell brake, Each pedal features its own unique resistance, pedal spacing is adjustable, removable rubber pedal covers, metal Titlon style pedal plates (when rubber cover is removed), all metal construction, adjustable load cell brake, optional Elastomer spacers for Load Cell (45Kg, 65kg, 85kg, 95kg), holes for hard mounting pedals, and 3 stickers you can add to the pedal face plates for additional grip.

Pictured below are your three options for pedal facing: Rubber cover, grip sticker, or smooth metal plate.

Top Quality and Durability in Mid-Price Pedal Set

The pedal set is the shining star of the whole CSL Elite bundle. They are built very well, they have good weight to them, and the all metal construction gives me the utmost faith that these pedals will withstand my lead foot stomping on them.

At first I didn’t love the rubber grip pedal covers, but discovered they are nice when you are racing with a pair of socks on because they don’t make the pedals feel hard on the balls of your feet.

On the bottom of the pedal set there are a few grip pads to help get traction on your carpet if you are not hard mounting them. I easily peeled off the grip stickers and when I tested the pedals on the floor the grip stickers came off under duress.

Functionality – With a Great Modular Design

Fanatec used a modular design so that you could change the spacing between the pedals. There is no other pedal set for Xbox One that lets you do this. This is really advantageous for people who want to use a heel toe technique, you can slide your brake pedal right next to your throttle. Other sets like the Thrustmaster T3PA Pro’s only let you move the pedal face plate which is not the same.

Having 3 different resistances on the throttle, brake and clutch is fantastic. The clutch and throttle both have good travel distances, I only wish the throttle was a little bit stiffer. Unfortunately that is not adjustable. The clutch on the other hand has a nice resistance to it and really kicks back at you after it’s compressed.

The load cell is great and it is easy to change out the amount of pressure you like. You can mix and match the Elastomer spacers to get the brake pressure set to your preference. I changed out the spacers a few times to find my best brake pressure and each time only took me about 30 seconds to make a change.

Mounting was Easy

The pedal set had two holes in the bottom which mounted perfectly on my PlaySeat Evolution and didnt require any drilling. There are grips on the bottom for a carpet, but my best advice would be to hard mount them.

Compatibility

This pedal set is compatible on the Xbox One and PC. It will work on both the CSL Elite and ClubSport V2 wheelbase.

Fanatec Pedal Alternatves

Fanatec also offers a two pedal version of Elite pedals without a Load Cell Brake for $80. You could grab these pedals and then upgrade later or you could check out the Clubsport V3 Pedals which are a very nice higher end set.

How Does CSL Elite Bundle Perform as a Total Package

This is a solid racing setup for Xbox One. The driving experience is immersive and between a quality motor in the wheelbase and a very well done pedal set it’s worth taking a look at. More than anything I am impressed with the pedal set as a whole and the strength and smoothness of the force feedback motor. I don’t love the P1 rim, but I can live with it for the price.

• Hard mounting may require drilling into your rig
• Does not feature an auto centering spring for Xbox
• Action buttons should be located higher on the wheel rim
• Rev lights do not work on Xbox One (only PC)
• Pedal set is not invertable
• The Quick release system is not very quick

Fanatec CSL vs Thrustmaster TX

So lets set all things equal. The Fanatec CSL wheel base with the P1 rim costs $440 USD and the Thrustmaster TX wheel base with the 599XX Evo rim also costs $440 USD.

Which is better Fanatec CSL with the P1 rim or Thrustmaster TX with the 599XX Evo Rim?

What the CSL and TX Have in Common?

Both motors are brushless and encased in plastic, have smooth and strong force feedback, Xbox One and PC compatiblity, come standard with a table clamp, have pre-drilled holes for hard mounting, have quick release systems, have peripherals like rims, pedal sets, and shifters that can be added, both have 30 cm diameter wheel rims.

What are the Differences Between These Racing Wheels?

The Motors: The CSL wheelbase has slightly stronger and smoother single belt drive force feedback motor, but the TX has a better auto-centering mechanism for a more simulated feel when cornering and the force feedback is driven by a dual belt drive. The CSL required me to drill holes in my rig to hard mount, while the TX fit standard holes on all of my cockpits and wheel stands. The CSL-Elite is encased in thin inexpensive plastic, while the TX is encased in a thick solid plastic shell. When the CSL starts up it auto-calibrates very smoothly, when the TX starts up it auto calibrates in a very herky-jerky type of way.

The Rims:The P1 rim has larger paddle shifters which are the perfect distance from your fingers, but the 599XX rim paddle shifters while smaller offer a better click sound for engagement and the button layout is much more accessible. The P1 rim is made of texturized rubber and its very thick while the 599XX Evo is wrapped in hand stitched Alcantara from the Ferrari factory in Italy and has a nice soft padded touch. The P1 is light and delivers nice force feedback effects, but the 599XX Evo rim is even lighter and transfers micro-vibrations much better. The P1 has a bit of a toy look to it, while the 599XX Evo is a Ferrari replica rim and looks like its from a race car.

Which is Better for Racing on the X Box

All things considered I would say they are about equal with both having their good and bad points. In the scenario above Fanatec has the better wheel base, but Thrustmaster has the better rim. It comes down to what your preferences are, better force feedback or a more immersive feeling wheel. For me it’s a toss up as they both are really good driving experiences at the price point.

If I was to bring in the ClubSport V2 into this conversation it is better than both the Elite and TX, but of course it also 2X the price.

Fanatec CSL Racing Wheel Review Wrap Up

All together the Elite bundle is really good. I would say that given the price, quality, and durability it is on par with what I expected…not quite the ClubSport V2 and competitive with the Thrustmaster TX.

I am truly excited to see a high end sim racing company like Fanatec offing a mid-priced product for console racers. I think this bundle is worth a look especially if you have been eyeing a Fanatec product. This bundle would be more geared to someone who has the ability to hard mount it though as I wouldn’t trust the table clamp to keep a wheel this strong very stable for long periods of time.

First off if you are not familiar with Fanatec they have been making high end sim racing products for years. Most people fell in love with their Fanatec wheel on Forza Motorsport 3 and 4, but do to Microsoft licensing issues Fanatec wasn’t able to produce a racing wheel for the Xbox One until now. Currently they are offering this high end set which I review below and a more consumer friendly priced option called the CSL Elite Bundle.

Fanatec ClubSport Wheel and Pedals In Action on Xbox One

While in the video, they don’t use the Shifter, but it’s also included in the bundle. Let’s take a closer look at this package from Fanatec and see what this bundle has to offer.

The Best Racing Setup Money Can Buy

Fanatec is absolutely the highest rated sim racing product on the market available for consoles. The force feedback is strong, smooth, quiet, and delivers the best simulated racing experience through a full size wheel rim, which you just don’t get in other brands.

Everything is adjustable to customize the setup to your racing needs from adjusting the distance between your paddle shifters to your rim, all the way to changing your force feedback settings while in the middle of a race, or even changing the resistance on the shifter.

Because the pedals come standard with a load cell, they produce an extremely realistic braking sensation created by the pressure you put on the pedal as opposed to how far you pushed the brake down. The pedals are super responsive and are tuned perfectly so that you can feel them pushing back up under your feet.

Multiple Platform Compatibility

Adding the universal hub makes this the most versatile racing setup on the market. This is the only setup that would allow you to play on Playstaion 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Bundle and Save

The Xbox One bundle saves you about $100 then buying each one pf these Fanatec products individually. If you wanted to save a few more bucks you could get the P1 rim, which has the Xbox buttons included so you can bypass purchasing the universal hub. That would knock about $150 off the price. You would be downgrading your quality of product though.

Mounting

This Wheelbase and pedal set will mount to almost all the popular wheel stands and rigs. My best recommendation for this particular setup would be the GT Omega RS9 or the Playseat Evolution. the Renn Sport cockpits offered by Fanatec are great, but the two cockpits I mentioned here are more affordable and solid quality products.

How Does it compare to the Thrustmaster TX or Logitech G920

The difference is night and day in terms of quality. Logitech is not even in the same league as this product from Fanatec, while the Thrustmaster as a little bit closer in performance, but not the same in quality.

Force Feedback Comparison

The force feedback of the Clubsport Wheelbase V2 is one of the truest translations to a real car you will experience. While they did design this with a belt driven mechanism it delivers equivalent torque as to what you would expect from a direct drive wheel. The Thrustmaster TX wheels also use a belt drive so the force feedback is somewhat similar, all though the Fantec generates more torque and for longer periods of time even as the motor gets warm. Logitech uses helical gearing which is not as strong and not as quiet as the other wheels.

Wheelbase Casing Comparison

The casing on the Clubsport Wheelbase is also a high end aluminum and all the metal parts that connect the wheel rim are brilliantly machined, while the Thrustmaster and Logitech wheelbases are encased in hard plastic protective shells with plastic components for the wheel rims.

Rim Size Comparison

The rim size on the Fanetec is 12.9 inches just like a real race car, while the Thrustmaster and Logitech wheels are 11 inches. Thrustmaster does offer an add-on rim the 599XX Evo rim which is just over 12 inches and wrapped in Alcantara. While that add-on rim is one of my favorites, this Forza rim on the Fanatec is phenomenal.

Pedal Comparison

One of the best places you can see measure quality difference is in the pedals. the Logitech G920 has 8 bit resolution pedals, Thrustmaster TX has 10 bit resolution pedals, and The Fanatec has 12 bit resolution pedals. The higher the resolution the better the pedals translate your inputs. You also have significantly more control of your experience with pedal adjustments including angles and pedal stiffness on all pedals.

Now don’t get me wrong I absolutely love my Thrustmaster and Logitech wheels, but the Fanatec package is next level racing. It’s simply a better product in every aspect and Fanatec is justified in charging a price more than double the Thrustmaster and Logitech options.

Who is The Fanatec Xbox One Bundle For

While I love this wheel, the price point makes it super exclusive and not for everybody. If you plan on racing on multiple platforms PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, then honestly this product even at this price is the best value. You can simply buy one bundle and it literally would work on any platform you want to play with and you don’t need extra parts or adapters.

If you only plan to race on just Xbox or just PlayStation, I honestly think there are more affordable options like the TX or the 920 that will make you just as happy.

Fanatec Racing Wheel for Xbox One – Wrap Up

If you are an Xbox One racer in my opinion the price is not worth it. I am telling you though knowing full well this is the best wheel you can get. I just can’t justify paying more for my wheel and pedal set than I did for my entire console. The Fanatec Wheel for The Xbox One with a mid range cockpit is gonna cost you $2,000 at a minimum. You can get the Thrustmaster TX leather with a mid priced cockpit for $1,000

I think the Thrustmaster TX is the best choice for Xbox because it performs great and leaves room in your budget for a racing seat. It simply is the best VALUE if you are only playing racing games on your Xbox One and that’s what makes it my most recommended steering wheel.

It’s the price of the Fanatec wheel that’s the only thing that keeps me from rating this 5 stars. It’s not priced for console racers!

Now with all that being said, if you are a hardcore racer and you want to get the top of the line racing wheel than this is for you. You will not only be the envy of all your friends, but this setup is gonna last you a long time and work on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. I would go for the full bundle and skip out exchanging for the P1 rim. Honestly if you are already spending this kind of money, you might as well go all in!

The standard package includes the racing wheel and a 2 pedal set (gas and brake). It does have the ability for adding on some components in the Thrustmaster eco-system and there is also a Pro version available which features a 3 pedals set.

Thrustmaster Steering Wheels for Xbox One

If you are not familiar with Thrustmaster they have been making wheels for consoles and PC’s for a long time. They have a reputation for making high quality mid priced driving wheels. The TMX is not their first offering on the Xbox One, but it is their first at this price.

The TMX steering wheel’s price point puts it just below the Thrustmaster 458 Italia edition ($300) and just above the Thrustmaster 458 Spider ($100). It is Thrustmaster’s answer to the T150, a similar product that is made for PS4.

Lets a take a hard look at the TMX and see what Thrustmaster has to offer…

TMX Force Feedback Racing Wheel Specs

270 to 900 degrees of rotation adjustable on the fly, force feedback, 12 action buttons, d-pad, 2 5 inch brushed metal paddle shifters, hybrid belt-pulley and gears system, metal ball-bearing axle, 11″/28 cm in diameter, rubber grips on the rim, Xbox One certified embedded software: the racing wheel is automatically recognized by the Xbox One, Pedals with wide foot rest, each pedal’s angle of inclination can be adjusted to 3 positions, brake pedal features progressive resistance.

A Great Racing Experience

When I received this wheel I tested it mounted to a Playseat Evolution using the TMX Mounting Adapter and I also tried it with a Ultimate WheelStand…I was SERIOUSLY surprised for the price how good this wheel feels in games like Forza 6, DiRT Rally and Project Cars. Its worth noting that the TMX does not normally mount to a cockpit, you need a mounting adapter.

Force Feedback Engine is Quality

The force feedback is smooth, strong (but not over powering), quiet, and does a good job of translating the feel of the road. It reacted great to my driving inputs and had a nice pull back as I was drifting through corners.

For a belt and pulley mechanism this is a big upgrade from the bungee cord mechanism inside the Thrustmaster Spider. It’s not quiet as strong as the TX, but it delivers a great simulated racing feel that is immersive!

The Wheel Rim Center Column is Well Designed

The rim on the TMX is similar to other rims Thrustmaster has designed and because of that it has a nice layout with all of your buttons easy to reach while racing.

A good button layout is helpful because in most games you will need to use your right thumb while driving to hit the “A” button for the handbrake. For example in DiRT Rally you need to use the handbrake a lot and you will be thankful you can hit the button without letting go of the rim. You simply can reach over with your thumb and hit the button while you steer.

I don’t love the “TM” emblem or colored buttons on the center column, but I can live with not loving the aesthetics because what it lacks in looks it makes up for in performance and price.

I also am a big proponent of the D-pad on the center column, which makes navigating menus much easier. The paddle shifters are a comfortable distance from the rim, they move with the rim as you turn, and they make a nice click sound and spring back into place when they are engaged.

The Rubber on the Steering Wheel Rim is Grippy

The rim has a rubber grip on it which helps your hands hold the wheel through the force feedback.

I wish they covered the whole wheel with the rubber that they have at the 9 and 3 positions, but its still pretty good. For me since I drive with the TH8A shifter I normally one hand the wheel at the 12 O’clock position in games like Forza. When using the paddle shifter your hands are right on the rubber and its got a nice feel in your hands. I actually like this rim better than the stock rim on the TX Italia Edition although that is an overall better wheel.

It Comes Standard With a Progressive Brake

If you have never raced with a wheel and pedal set before, then you perhaps can’t appreciate what it means to have a progressive brake. A progressive brake simulates the feel of real braking…the further you push the brake down in distance the harder it gets to push down.

The progressive brake does a good job of simulating real brake pressure…not quite as good as brake mod on higher end pedals, but it gets the job done.

The pedals are responsive and they offer a nice push back under your feet. I didn’t try to adjust the pedal angles at all, but doing so looks to be really easy.

The Throttle pedal throw distance is a little bit long for my taste, but that is a normal complaint for me with all the Thrustmaster pedal sets. Whats cool about the TMX though is you can add on an upgraded Thrustmaster 3 pedal set separately. I hooked up the T3PA wide pedal set and it really took the TMX to the next level.

While I don’t immediately love the plastic laden pedal set on the TMX, they are serviceable without upgrading and the fact that they have a progressive brake makes me forgive them alot. Considering the price point these pedals are as good as can be expected.

TMX Pro Version vs Standard Version

The difference between the TMX standard version and the Pro version is the pedal set. Everything else hardware wide is exactly the same. In the TMX Pro version you get a 3 pedal set included instead of the standard 2 pedal set. The 3 pedal set is called the T3PA Wide pedal set which features a gas, brake, and clutch pedal.

The T3PA wide pedal set is a really nice addition not only because of the clutch, but because it adds on adjustable metal face plates and an adjustable conical brake module. These three features on the TMX Pro add a deeper level of immersion and allow you to customize your racing experience to your style.

The only drawbacks to the T3PA pedals are that they are not invertable like the T3PA Pro Pedals. Other than that, they are a huge upgrade over the TMX standard plastic pedals.

Does a 3 pedal Set Really Make A Difference?

Yes. The difference is enormous. Using the clutch pedal for most car types will help you accelerate quicker and stay in cars power band for longer. Additionally since you can adjust the brake mod on the T3PA’s, you can set it to a point right before your car locks the brakes. Doing this will help prevent lock up and help you brake later and more confidently into corner entries. I find this to be really helpful n games like Forza and Project Cars.

For a game like Dirt Rally, you can forego the clutch pedal and instead configure the pedal to be your hand brake. This makes drifting around sharp corners easier then trying to press down a button on the steering wheel while you are turning.

The Thrustmaster TMX is A Great Sim Racing Entry Level Wheel

One thing I like most about the Thrustmaster TMX wheel is it’s ability to use the eco-system from Thrustmaster. The TMX allows you to add on the TH8A shifter, and a 3 pedal set (T3PA Wide Pedals or T3PA Pro Pedals). This is something that you don’t get with the 458 Spider. This makes the TMX a really flexible solution for racers on a budget. You can always get the TMX now and then add on the components as your money allows. If you get the TMX Pro version then the T3PA wide set will come with it.

The TMX driving wheel however does not allow you to change out the actual wheel rim like the Thrustmaster TX. The TMX wheel rim is permanently attached and does not include the Thrustmaster Quick Release System. If you were looking for the ability to change rims, you would need to look at other options like the TX.

TMX Mounting Options

The TMX comes standard with a table clamp for mounting on a desk or table. There are wheel stands like, the Wheel Stand Pro, that also can mount a table clamp wheel.

Mounting Adapter for Cockpits

The wheel doesn’t naturally mount to cockpits or high end wheel stands, but there is a simple adapter you can get for like $25 that allows you to hard mount this wheel. The simple adapter screws into the bottom where the table clamp normally goes and then all of the standard Thrustmaster pre drilled holes will line up on your wheel mounting plate. Hooking up the adapter is super easy and is a great solution for mounting.

Multiple Compatibility – Xbox One and PC

Thrustmaster wheels always offer a great value by making their products have multiple compatibility. This racing wheel setup will work for both Xbox One and PC (Windows 10/8/7/Vista) and all racing games that support steering wheels. The Microsoft embedded software makes the wheel natively compatible in the Xbox One console’s menus.

My Best TMX Setup Recommendation

If you are in the market for a Thrustmaster steering wheel then chances are you are looking for a nice racing experience, more than a casual racer, but something that isn’t going to make you broke. The TMX is your best option for about $200.

My best recommendation for a starting set up would be the Thrustmaster TMX Pro Version . That will get you the wheel and a solid 3 pedal set (gas, brake, clutch) for just under $300. This would set you up with a decent rim, a good performing motor, and a 3 pedal set that includes a conical brake mod. You can find deals on Amazon to get this set for around $250 if you find the right deal.

Thrustmaster TMX Racing Wheel Review – Wrap Up

I am really impressed with the TMX. The build quality and the racing experience are impossible to beat at the price point.

This Thrustmaster wheel is significantly better than the 458 Spider because of its adjustable rotation, true force feedback, and ability to utilize the Thrustmaster eco-system. I actually think the motor is even better than the Logitech G920 which is a mid price wheel and performs a bit clunky due to its helical gearing. Ideally you can spend $200 now and then upgrade your pedals and shifter later, for a more immersive experience.

The TMX is no slouch when it comes to a good driving experience and I would highly recommend this as an entry level sim racing wheel for the Xbox One or PC. If you have the budget go for the TMX Pro upgrade to add the 3 pedal set. The 3 pedals and the conical brake mod make a hug difference in immersion and lap times.

This package includes the steering wheel and motor, a 2 pedal set (throttle and brake), and an attached gear shifter. It connects via USB to your PC or console.

This racing wheel by it’s price point should be considered an entry level racing wheel, but it comes across as a more of a toy. I tested the wheel and pedals of with some sim racing titles to see how it performed racing and I’ll cover how it performed by the end of this article.

It reminds of the Mad Catz Wireless Steering Wheel for the Xbox 360. It is the first racing peripheral offered by Megadream for the XB1 and XB1 S consoles and the company is primarily known for manufacturing inexpensive peripherals like controller chargers and headphones.

Lets see what the Megadream driving system has to offer:

Megadream Driving Force Wheel Specs

170 degrees of rotation, Fully rubberized grip D-shaped steering wheel, Dual Force feedback motor, helical gearing, vibration, adjustable steering sensitivity, auto-centering, 2 D-pads, 6 action buttons, table clamp, metal throttle and brake pedal face plates, adjustable pedal incline angles, progressive resistant brake to simulate real brake pressure, sequential paddle shifters, and manual shift stick.

Plays More Like A Toy Than A Sim

This wheel is predominately constructed of plastic and lacks the realistic race car look that other products on the market have. The wheel-rim, pedals, and shifter feel very small and do not provide much of a sense of immersion via look and feel. the pedal face plates are metal, the pedal base is made of plastic.

I mounted it to a standard desk and tried out Forza 6, F1 2015, and Horizon 2. The force feedback is semi-quiet, but because it uses helical gearing it delivers it a bit choppy. The force feedback is mild to weak at best and the limited wheel rotation of 170 degrees creates alot of understeer in tight corners.

While the buttons were very accessible on the center column the layout is not conducive to using your handbrake.

The progressive brake is serviceable and is comparable to the pedals that come with the Thrustmaster 458 Spider. Overall the pedals are fine, but look and feel like a cheap pedal set, which is very common for racing wheels at this price point. The bottom of the pedals also does not have any gripping mechanism which means if you have them on carpet they will slide around a bit…you need to secure them against something to prevent them from sliding.

The paddle shifters are small and located directly behind the wheels center column. They are plastic, about 3.5 inches in length, and move with the wheel when you turn.

The rim feel small and the plastic parts creak a little bit during gameplay. Overall the wheel just doesn’t translate the terrain, bumps, and back end of the car like other wheels. It does vibrate and the force feedback works, it just doesn’t feel immersive. I do appreciate the shifter, but being that is is attached permanently to the wheelbase you don’t have any options for adjusting it’s height or distance.

Multiple Compatibility

The one thing the Megadream racing wheel does have going in it’s favor is that it has compatibility with multiple systems such as Xbox One, Xbox One S, PlayStation 3, and any PC running Windows 7, 8, 9, or 10 in Direct- X Mode and X-INPUT. it also auto-identifies when plugged in to each system.

To connect the wheel you must:
XBOX One and Xbox One Slim:
Before connecting the steering wheel to your game console, you need to turn off the console. Plug the white color USB connector of the wheel to the XBOX one console for XBOX one Playing.

PS3:
Before connecting the steering wheel to your game console, you need to turn off the console. Plug the black color USB connector of the wheel to the PS3 console for PS3 playing.

PC-USB (Direct-X and X-INPUT):
Plug the black color USB connector of the wheel to your PC for Direct-X and X-INPUT playing.

Pros and Cons

The price of these two wheels is almost exactly the same, but that is where the comparisons end.

So what are the differences between these two racing wheels?

The Thrustmaster TMX is considered an entry level racing wheel because of it’s strong force feedback and ability to add on components like a 3 pedal set and a 7-speed shifter. It has much more of a realistic look and it does a much better job of translating bumps and terrain for a better racing experience. The stock pedals on both of these products leave a lot to be desired, but the TMX has two different 3 pedal sets sold separately that offer a much more simulated feeling.

At this price point the TMX is a much better value and would be my highest recommended wheel if this is the top of your budget. You can read more about the TMX here.

MegaDream Steering Wheel Xbox One Review Wrap Up

While the price of the Megadream driving setup looks attractive, it is hard to recommend this wheel with all of it’s short comings. The driving system just doesn’t have the same output as the Thrustmaster TMX which sells for only $10 more. I know some folks still may feel like the fact it comes with a shifter makes it a bit more desirable…I assure you, it’s just not up to par with standards set by the competition.

If you are playing Farming Simulator or Truck Simulator I suppose this product will work fine, but for racing games I would not recommend this wheel. You can check out my best recommendation here.

This package is by far the most complete bundle put out by Thrustmaster and was most likely offered in response to the Logitech G920 racing wheel which offers a leather rim and a 3 pedal set also. If you are wondering how the Thrustmaster VG TX Racing Wheel Leather Edition Premium compares to the Logitech G920, I will cover that by the end of this review.

Feels Awesome To Race With

I have this racing setup mounted on my Playseat Evolution and everything about the TX Premium leather edition is awesome. The force feedback is strong, smooth, quiet, and feels fantastic delivered through the leather wrapped rim. The paddle shifters make a nice “click” when engaged and spring back really strong into place.

The pedals are extremely responsive and you can really feel them pushing back against your feet. I have the conical rubber brake module hooked up and engaged at about 85% and it does a great job of simulating real brake pressure. My only complaint with the pedals is that the throw is a bit long on the clutch, but all in all…

Multiple Compatibility – Xbox One and PC

Thrustmaster Wheels always does a great job adding value by making their products have multiple compatibility. This driving setup will work for both Xbox One and PC and all racing games that support steering wheels.

This set is also compatible with the Thrustmaster TH8A Shifter, the T3PA Pro Pedal Set, the Ferrari F1 Rim, the Ferrari EVO 599XX Rim, and the Ferrari GTE Challenge Rim. That’s what makes this package so dynamic it comes standard with premium components, but is still upgradeable should you want to add to it.

Bundle and Save

This package is a GREAT VALUE because if you were to buy these products separately it would cost you more money. When you buy them as the VG TX Racing Wheel Leather Premium Edition you save a few bucks for sure. I definitely commend Thrustmaster for recognizing this and putting this consumer friendly package together.

These two steering wheels have a lot more in common then there Xbox One and PC compatibility. They both have leather rims, 3 pedal sets (gas, brake, & clutch), both have true force feedback, and they both are in the mid-price range for racing wheels.

So what are the differences between these two racing wheels?

Well the major difference is that the Thrustmaster wheel has lots of upgrade options, while the Logitech only offers a six speed shifter add on. The Thrustmaster pedal set also has a 16 bit input, while Logitech only has an 8 bit. This gives the Thrustmaster pedals much more accuracy and feel. Lastly the Thrustmaster force feedback feels slightly stronger and it has better internal components using sensors instead of helical gearing like the G920. This will make the TX feel stronger, last longer, and be a bit more durable.

I have been extremely happy with my TX wheel on the Xbox One and it is such a great value for the performance it delivers.

Thrustmaster TX Racing Wheel Leather Edition Premium Review

When Thrustmaster released the TX in 2013 I rated it 4 stars and I had said if this package included the T3PA Wide Pedal set it would make it 5 stars. Well now this is essentially that package with the T3PA wide pedals and one of the top rated Thrustmaster wheel add on rims.

If you are weighing your options for a steering wheel for your Xbox One or your PC, the G920 Driving Force wheel is considered a mid to high end wheel. This thing will deliver realistic steering and pedal action for the latest racing games.

In this review we will breakdown the specifics of the latest offering from Logitech and see if this wheel can deliver a simulated racing experience.

This is not the first wheel made by Logitech (they have been making wheels for years), but the G920 is the first steering wheel they have made for the Xbox One and after announcing 6 years ago they were done with racing peripherals. This wheel is a follow up to the Logitech G27 racing wheel, which is one of the highest rated wheels on Amazon (4.5 stars and 1200 customer reviews), but was never made compatible for Xbox gamers.

At the time of this review there are two other steering wheel options at a similar price point, the Thrustmaster TX ($450) and The Mad Catz Pro Racing Wheel ($375).

So for about 350 bucks, does the Logitech wheel compare to the Thrustmaster TX and The Mad Catz Racing Wheel? I will answer that question by the end of this review.

Let’s get into the Logitech G920 Driving Force Steering Wheel. This is a mid to high end driving wheel for anyone looking for a simulated and immersive racing experience. The price point ($350) is set competitively based on the features it offers. Here are some of the Logitech steering wheel specs.

The G920 is Very Similar To The G27 in look And Feel

3 Stainless Steel pedals (gas, brake, clutch), Hand stitched leather wheel, duel motor force feedback, semi- automatic paddle shifters, d-pad and on wheel controls, and helical gearing. If you are a previous G27 owner, then this wheel offers a fairly comparable experience, with build and quality.

This wheel and pedal set feels exactly like the Logitech G27, except that it doesn’t come standard with a shifter (you have to purchase the Driving Force Shifter separately for $60). What you get in the box is the wheel and pedals, a USB power supply, and the user manuals.

The Wheel And Forced Feedback Feel Great

The wheel, which is a D-shape, delivers extremely quiet, smooth, and strong force feedback and always maintain a little tightness, which helps you keep control.

The wheel also offers 900 degrees of rotation which means you can turn the wheel around 2.5X, hand over hand on wide turns, just like a real car.

Quality Construction And Built Durable

The wheel shaft contains solid steel ball bearings and you can tell the wheel is extremely durable and built to take a beating. The stainless steel paddle shifters give a nice click sound when they are engaged. It also has helical gears that are modeled after automotive transmissions to reduce unwanted noise and vibration. The wheel rim is wrapped in real hand-stitched leather that offers a nice look and comfortable grip.

The wheel and pedal set both weigh in around 5 lbs and are constructed of plastic and metal.

3 Responsive Pedals

The pedals contain a gas, brake and clutch standard. The brake contains a non-linear rubber mod inside, which simulates progressive pressure-sensitive brake system in a real car. You can also reposition the pedal faces to make heel-toe maneuvers easier. There are also rubber feet on the bottom of the pedal set for hard surfaces and a retractable carpet grip system to help your pedals stay in place if they are not being mounted to a cockpit.

Easy Access To Buttons And Controls

The buttons are all accessible right on the wheel (where as the G27 has them on the shifter). The wheel contains all the standard Xbox One buttons for easy access, “A”, “X”, “B”, “Y”, start, menu, LB, RB, a d-pad, and your main Xbox button.

Having easy access to buttons is a feature not to be overlooked. For most racing games you need to be able to access the handbrake with a button click. If you configure your handbrake to the “B” button you can easily slide your right hand thumb onto the button while you are steering.

Add On a Shifter for More Immersive Racing

The Logitech G920 comes with the clutch pedal, but not a shifter. You can however buy the six speed h-pattern shifter, The Logitech Driving Force Shifter, which is sold separately for $60. Ability to Adjust Sensitivity

Everybody likes their force feedback (FFB) a little bit different. You can adjust the sensitivity of the wheel by plugging it into a PC and changing the internal settings. This will allow you to turn up or reduce the strength of the FFB. Even if you are using it on an Xbox One, you can still plug your Logitech wheel into a PC via USB and change your settings. Changing these settings can be particularly helpful to customize the wheel to your preferences for the most part once you get the setting you like you only need to set it once and it will be programmed in.

A Few Limitations on the Logitech Steering Wheel

This wheel option doesn’t offer detachable rim options or alternate pedal sets like the Thrustmaster TX, however the stock rim on here is far superior to the TX Italia’s stock rim. There is also a bit to be desired in the sensitivity of the pedals, the brake comes across stiff and the accelerator not quite as sensitive as what i am used to.

All of the Xbox One racing games (expect for Need for Speed Rivals), offer racing wheel support.

Mounts On Most Cockpits

Because this is going to be an extremely popular wheel all of the big brand cockpit and wheel stand makers are making accommodations to mount the G920 wheel. The 3 most popular brands: Playseat, Open Wheeler, and Wheel Stand Pro, are already making products that mount the G920 Driving Force Wheel. It seems though that Logitech recommends the Playseat Evolution on their site.

Of course if you weren’t interested in mounting the wheel on a cockpit or stand, the G920 comes with the option for table mounting your wheel and the pedals contain some options for keeping them stable on the floor.

A Piece Of Mind Warranty

Logitech steering Wheels have a 2-Year Limited Hardware Warranty. I have never had to call Logitech customer service, but looking around the net it seems that they have outstanding customer service.

Compared To Steering Wheels at The Same Price Point

Compared to the Mad Catz Racing Wheel $375) the Logitech G920 ($350) is almost the same price, so which one is a better value?

While both products feature helical gearing the Logitech steering wheel is the easy answer. The force feedback in the G920 is not only smoother, stronger, and quieter the fact that it comes standard with a clutch makes it a better value. The pedals on the G920 also feel better than the Mad Catz pedals.

The only thing I like better about the Mad Catz wheel is that I like the way it looks…it certainly looks more like a race car steering wheel, but let’s face it…

The Mad Catz product just doesn’t cut it and I would strongly advise steering clear of it.

Compared to the Thrustmaster TX Leather Eition ($450) the Logitech G920 ($350) is a few bucks less, so is it worth the savings?

Well that depends, there are two different versions of the TX: the Leather Edition and the F458 Italia Edition. Both versions have the same servo base wheel motor, but vary in the options you get.

The G920 and the TX steering wheels drive and feel somewhat similar, but the TX edges out the 920 in performance and quality. Both deliver smooth, strong, and quiet force feedback to create a simulated immersive driving experience, but the brushless dual belt drive motor on the TX is of a slightly higher caliber.

The G920 is a better value than the Thrustmaster F458 Italia Edition, simply because it comes standard with a 3 pedal set and has a better rim.

The TX leather Edition, has a 3 pedal set and a leather rim, similar to the G920. Where both the Thrustmaster TX wheels are really better than Logitech is the upgrade options and the TX wheelbase. The G920 only has an add on 6 speed shifter to add on, while Thrustmaster offers multiple wheel rims, pedal sets, and a 7 speed shifter. I also feel like the Thrustmaster wheel base is a bit stronger, smoother and quieter with the Force feedback and the pedals are a bit more responsive with a higher bit resolution.

The G920 Logitech Steering Wheel is a Best Seller

When it comes to wheels for the Xbox One and PC alot of people gravitate towards the 920. I think what people like most about it is the 2 year warranty, the low price for a mid grade driving system with a 3 pedal set, and getting the next gen racing peripheral from the same company that manufactured the classic G27.

The 920 has done remarkably well in sales and despite it’s handful of drawbacks it delivers a quality gaming experience that will make you feel good about your purchase.

Logitech G920 Driving Force Review – My Final thoughts

The Logitech G920 Steering Wheel is fantastic. This Steering wheel definitely offers an immersive simulated experience for playing Xbox One and PC racing games and is the best option for racing wheels with a stock setup. The fact for $350 for the wheel and pedals and another $60 for the shifter, you have spent less than $500 and you have a wheel, pedals w/ a clutch, and the shifter.

If you are looking for steering wheel and pedal set, that is out of the box a great experience with only a shifter to add on, this is an outstanding racing wheel choice.

This steering wheel is considered a mid to high end Xbox One racing wheel ans is priced just under $400. I’ll break down the specifics of the latest steering wheel offering from Mad Catz.

Introducing the Mad Catz Pro Racing Force Feedback Wheel and Pedals for Xbox One…The wheel and pedals system are a realistic racing simulation accessory with force feedback hat you can to mount into your racing cockpit or clamp onto a desk.  It is a definitely a solid choice if you are looking for an immersive racing experience on your Xbox One.

Mad Catz released this wheel late in the summer of 2014 and was made for full integration with the Xbox One. When the wheel was first released there were alot of complaints about it such as it had lots of of bugs and the force feedback was very choppy and unnatural.

Mad Catz has continued to work on improving the steering wheel and provide customer service to those that had issues. It seems now that better reviews are coming in and they have the wheel operating at a much higher standard than when it was first released.

Mad Cats Pro Racing Wheel Specs:

Switchable rotation between 270 and 900 degrees, force feedback with dual motors and helical gears, pedals adjustable to 9 different positions, adjustable steering wheel rake angle to 4 different positions (15 degrees each), metal paddle shifters, suede leather wheel rim on an aluminum steering wheel.

The two pedal set is highly adjustable and also includes a pedal frame that is supposed to mimic the sensation of foot well limits, replicating the perspective of pro racers. If you are familiar with the Mad Catz steering wheel for the xbox 360, I would overall say this version is similar, but a bit improved.

So for a mid to high end racing wheel does the Mad Catz steering wheel compare to it’s Xbox One competition in the same price range? Is it as good or better than the Thrustmaster TX or the Logitech G920? Hopefully I’ll have that squared away for you by the end of this review.

Built With Future Upgrades In Mind

Mad Catz built this wheel with the potential for updates farther down the road. The wheel face is removable and easily detaches from the wheel base, allowing for future wheel rims to be attached. The internal firmware is also upgradable via USB to a PC.

The Mad Catz Steering Wheel Leaves A Bit To Be Desired

How it feels to race with the Mad Catz Pro Racing Force Feedback Wheel and Pedals? I have taken the Mad Catz Wheel out for a spin on Forza Horizon 2 and Project Cars and the wheel feels a bit like weight plastic in your hands. It turns really smooth, but the force feedback has a bit of a grinding sound and I can feel the wheel chop through the gears as it returns to center.

The force feedback does not feel very strong either and I have it cranked to 100% in the game. The pedals are solid and they feel firm and responsive to the game. I do like the feel of the suede leather in my hands, but after a while may make your hands a bit clamey.

It has Multiple Mounting Options

The base of the wheel is small, lite weight, and it will mount really easy to a table, desk, or racing cockpit. The Mad Catz particularly was designed to mount on the Playseat Evolution. They do have options though for table/desk mounting and there is a version of the Wheel Stand pro, that can also mount it.

Overall It’s A Good Wheel, but…

Overall the Mad Catz Pro Racing Wheel and pedal set is decent, however I do think that the Thrustmaster TX and The Logitech G920 are better options, particularly because they have stronger force feedback and have vibration. For the $400 asking price on the Mad Catz wheel, I think they could have delivered a better product.

So that’s some specs and my opinion, now let’s get into some pros and cons and wrap up this review.

Mad Catz Pro Racing Force Feedback Wheel Xbox One Review

This wheel is definitely worth a look, especially if you are looking for an option other than Thrustmaster or Logitech. From my research it looks like all of the initial bugs and kinks that Mad Catz experienced in the beginning with their steering wheel have all been resolved and you can confidently order this product. Again my only real reservations on the Mad Catz Pro steering wheel is that it’s over priced in my opinion and could have better force feedback.

Mad Catz also mentioned future upgrades and to date we have yet to see any, while companies like Thrustmaster have put out multiple add on rims, a shifter, and multiple pedal sets for their Thrustmaster TX Wheel base.

I still think the Mad Ctaz force feedback steering wheel has a lot to offer: it turns smooth, the pedals are firm, and it has some great mounting options, but for $400 I have my reservations.

I will breakdown the specifics and review this low priced offering from Hori and see if it’s a worth the money they are asking for it.

This is not the first wheel made by Hori (they have been making wheels for years), but this is their first option for the Xbox One.

The Hori company makes inexpensive options for video game controllers and this is their follow up to the wheel they offered on the Xbox 360. At the time of this review there is only one other Xbox One steering wheel option at a similar price point and that is the Thrustmaster VG 458 Ferrari Spider which retails at about $20-$30 higher than the Hori Racing Wheel One. Currently this Hori steering wheel is the least expensive Xbox One wheel.

Let’s get into the Hori Racing Wheel. This is a budget friendly option for anyone looking to purchase an inexpensive racing wheel for the Xbox One. I think this wheel is a great starter wheel for kids or adults that are really casual racers and don’t need all the fancy options higher priced wheels offer. While the price point is outstanding it comes at a cost of missing some major features that create a great immersive racing experience.

Hori Racing Wheel One Xbox One Specs:

Paddle shifters, rubber grips, 8 inch diameter wheel, programmable buttons for customization, auto centering, and analog foot pedals. If you are switching from the Hori Xbox 360 wheel then you may be disappointed, because while they redsigned the pedals for wider spacing, they added an arc to the pedal set that makes it a bit uncomfortable on your feet. They also removed the force feedback (which certainly is why it is priced so low).

So for under $100 does the Hori Xbox One wheel compare to other options at the same price point? Is it a better choice than the Thrustmaster VG Spider? I will answer that question by the end of this review.

Racing with The Hori Racing Wheel One On Xbox One

How it feels to race with the Hori Xbox One racing wheel – I used this wheel with Forza 5 and Forza Horizon 2. It feels really small in your hands and the lack of any type feedback standout immediately. It feels plastic and cheap, not to suggest it would break easily, just it feels like a kids toy in your hands. The arc they added to the pedals is pretty awkward on the bottoms of your feet and causes the pedals to move around a bit more than a normal set.

Once you get into racing it doesn’t really feel authentic. The reason this wheel lacks is because there is no forced feedback, no vibration, and not even a rumble sound to give you any indication of how the cars are handling. Its really not enjoyable and you feel very disconnected from the game. Simply put, the wheel and pedals functionally work (it turns the cars, accelerates, and brakes), it does what it says, but I would much rather use a standard controller than this wheel. For a guy who loves racing wheels that is a big statement for me to make. With that being said, this makes for a perfect inexpensive starter wheel for a kid…I would have died for something like this as a child.

One Mounting Option For The Hori Racing Wheel One

As far as mounting the wheel, it uses suction cups to hold it into place on a table. There are no clamping options at this time. If you have a rough table or desk, you may have issues getting the suction cups to work and would probably find a smooth finished surface or glass table will work better.

While This Wheel Isn’t For Me…

If you are looking for a wheel under $100 the Thrustmaster Ferrari Spider is a much better value and extremely better racing experience. There just really isn’t much to the Hori wheel aside from the fact it has the lowest price point that makes it any good. For an extra couple dollars I personally think you will be much happier, with the VG Spider if you are an adult or teenager.

So that’s some of the specs and my opinion, let’s hit some pros and cons and close out this review

If you consider yourself more than a casual racer who is looking for a racing wheel, then this is not for you. I just have a hard time recommending it without any type of feedback…remember you even get feedback (vibrations) in a standard Xbox controller. However as a first wheel for someone young, that wants to play Forza or F1 2015, this is wheel may just be exactly what you are looking for.

All in all, my best recommendation would be to spend a few more bucks and grab the Thrustmaster Spider. The lack of any type of feedback in the Hori Racing Wheel really will make your racing experience seem disappointing and fake if you are an adult with expectations.

The TX was also extremely defective when it first released and people were weary of spending the money on it and were waiting for more options in the market.

240 degrees of rotation, 7/10 scale replica (11 inches in diameter), bungee cord mechanism system for linear resistance, automatic centering, paddle shifters, and adjustable sensitivity to ensure precise driving in all games. It includes a two pedal set with a wide foot rest, a progressive resistance brake, and individually adjustable pedal alignments. The specs are very similar to the Thrustmaster Ferrari racing Wheel Red legend edition for the PC and PS3 if you happen to be familiar with that model.

The Ferrari 458 Spider Racing Wheel On Xbox One Feels Good

How it feels to race with the VG Ferrari 458 spider – I have only raced with it using Forza 5 and Forza Horizon 2 and initially it feels like light weight plastic in your hands and the bungee cord system while provides resistance is not the same as force feedback and vibration. The pedals are serviceable and the progressive brake feels fairly tight which is good. Once you get your adrenaline going in a race, you kind of forgive some it’s low budget flaws though and it really makes for a great racing experience.

Mounting the Thrustmaster Spider Racing Wheel

The base of the wheel is pretty small and it is pretty easy to mount to a table, wheel stand, or cockpit. Since it is pretty light it will pack up pretty easy if you need to take it off your table or folder up a wheel stand.

It’s Not as Good As The TMX, But For The Price It’s Solid

Thrustmaster offers another entry level racing wheel called the TMX which is double the price of the spider wheel. It has real force feedback with a belt driven motor and it allows you the ability to upgrade the pedal set or add on a shifter.

Overall the TMX is a better racing experience and there is a pretty big gap between the bungee cord system of the Spider and the belt drive of the TMX. But comparing it to the low priced Hori Racing Wheel the Thrustmaster VG Ferrari Spider smashes it. This wheel provides a great option for casual racing and the fact that the Hori is an 8 inch diameter wheel and has no feedback at all, this is your best bet especially for the money.

So that’s some specs and my opinion, now let’s get into some pros and cons of this Thrustmaster racing wheel and wrap up this review.

Thrustmaster VG Ferrari Spider Racing Wheel Review Wrap Up

This is a great starter wheel to immerse yourself in a racing game. For less than $100 for this wheel I really don’t have any major complaints except for adding compatibility for other systems. This wheel is also among our top selling items here at Xbox Racing Pro.

My best recommendation would be to mount this on a wheel stand so that you can not only secure your wheel into place, but your pedals as well. Most people who mount on a table have issues trying to secure their pedals into place and stand solves that issue.

This is a great wheel for the price and is a MUCH better choice than the Hori Racing Wheel ($80), but not quite as feature rich as the TMX which costs $200. I like the 458 Spider wheel and it is hard to argue with the value it provides for this price.

Thrustmaster Tx Out Of The Box

Out of the box this wheel looks and feels like a toy. It feels fairly light in your hands and kind of plasticy with some rubber grip added around the rim. The 7/10 replica rim looks small and the Ferrari logo in the center is plastic.

The buttons on the wheel push really easy and are labeled appropriately for navigating your Xbox. The paddle shifters are metal and feel really nice. They make a good click sound and spring back into place when they are engaged.

The pedals have metal face plates, but the base and is plastic. The face plate on the gas looks a bit small and will make you wonder how is gonna feel in a race. The brake face plate is significantly wider and looks a bit more promising.

The gas pushes down nice and smooth and the brake has a nice bit of resistance when you press it. Both pedals definitely want to spring back up when you are pushing on them. Each pedal offers a unique level of resistance.

There are no customization available on the pedals like the ability to adjust the resistance or change the position of the pedals. For options like that you need to upgrade to the T3PA pedals.

The base for the wheel is super solid and you can quickly tell that this is where they focused their attention on making this high quality. You can also purchase the wheel base separatelyand then add on whatever wheel rim and pedals you like. The wheel base is clearly the best part of this product and a good reason why Thrustmaster focused their entire eco-system around it.

Thrustmaster TX Racing Wheel And Pedals In Use

I have used this on all of the Xbox One Racing titles including F1 2015, Project Cars, and all the Forza games.

Without a doubt this changes your Xbox racing experience entirely. While the wheel does feel a bit small in your hands while racing, the force feedback and vibration are absolutely unreal. Within seconds of your first race will not be thinking this looks like a toy anymore.

The pedals and the brake feel really nice, but the key to making them work best for you is adjusting your game settings and adding some dead zone like real pedals.

All of the value in this wheel is in the form of the technology that they used to power it. Thrustmaster definitely used plastic parts to keep the cost down, but 100% over delivered on the racing simulation feel. The brushless motor inside the wheel base is super quiet and makes less noise than the steering wheels that use helical gearing.

Everything you need to know about why I rate this product a 4 is how it feels when I race. AWESOME! Hands down this racing wheel is a great value for the price point. The TX’s wheel base alone are what make this a fantastic product.

Thrustmaster TX Has Some Standout Features

The adjustable force feedback and vibrations are truly outstanding. Nothing will make you feel more like you a real driving experience than these realistic features.

The brushless motor is super quiet and keeps the wheel feeling smooth when turning. The gears don’t grind inside and if it wasn’t for the humming sound of the cooling fan this wheel would make zero noise.

The versatility of the wheel is also fantastic:

• Use it on the Xbox One or a PC
• Don’t like the rim it came with, easily detach it and get the Ferrari GTE or F1 rim
• Change the wheel rotation any degree between 270 and 900
• Customize and reconfigure the button the action button setup
• Add A 3 pedal set or a shifter gear box to the set up
• Mounts on most racing cockpits, you can clamp the TX to a table (clamp included)

The spring inside of the paddle shifters is pretty strong, you can clearly feel and hear when you shift gears. I also love how Thrustmaster disguised the D-pad inside of the large red Start Engine button. All of the buttons on the wheel are really easy to access even when you are racing.

The heart of this product is the base of the wheel. It has a great weight to it and you can tell it’s quality from the moment you pick it up.

The TX Is Easy To Mount To All Popular Rigs and Wheel Stands

The good part about owning such a popular product is all of the big cockpit and wheel stand manufacturers offer mounting plates for the Thrustmaster TX. I have mine mounted on a Playseat Evolution, which matched up perfectly with the wheel and pedals. If a racing seat is a bit much for you, you can also get a wheelstand or mount the TX to a table via the clamp it comes with.

Thrustmaster TX Racing Wheel Complaints

The 7/10 replica rim is definitely a drawback, but honestly all of the current wheels available for the Xbox One are the same size or smaller. There is a Thrustmaster EVO 599XX rim, is an 8/10 replica rim, which you can add, but that is sold separately. There is one functionality drawback of the wheel and that is that you have to occasionally hook it up to a PC to update the drivers.

It surprised me that this can’t be done through Xbox console and that they couldn’t ship this racing wheel with the drivers updated. Since I have owned my wheel I have had to update my drivers twice.

If you only own a MAC, you will not be able to update the drivers, you must connect to a PC.

I do think the GTE rim add on makes a big difference on the wheel base as it is a little bit heavier, and wish the shipped this with that rim.

Thrustmaster TX Pedal Complaints

At first glance the pedals look a bit no frills. I would prefer bigger face plates and more pedal customization, like changing the resistance or moving the pedal positions. I would also prefer a clutch..but keeping true to the Ferrari 458 style, they excluded the clutch.

The pedals are serviceable, but I would recommend the upgrade to the T3PA Pro Pedal set that offers a progressive brake, a clutch, and the ability to invert the pedals from Formula 1 style to GT Style. If these pedals came standard with this wheel, I would rate this wheel a 5 easy!

Why Do Amazon Reviews Only Rate It 3.5 Stars?

If you are looking at Amazon reviews for the TX Ferrari 458 Italia Edition and wondering why they are low, when the wheel first came out in 2013 there were a lot of problems with it and therefore got low ratings. People complained of the wheel not working or the base of the wheel smoking after they started playing. Thrustmaster customer support was reaching out to customers directly on Amazon and getting them new replacement wheels for free.

Notice most of the review are either 5 stars or 1 star and not much in between. If i got my wheel and it didnt work, I would have rated it a 1 also, especially after being so excited for it.

When I got my wheel I waited until the initial problems were over and I have never had any issues with my wheel at all. Since that time the reviews of this wheel have really turned around and been climbing.

How Does It compare To Steering Wheels At The Same Price Point?

The Thrustmaster TX Racing Wheel Ferrari 458 Italia Edition
is far superior to the Mad Cats Pro Racing Wheel which sells at almost the same price. The Mad Catz wheel has weak force feedback, makes a grinding noise when it is turning, and the suede rim makes your hands sweat. The Mad Catz Wheel is upgradeable, however they haven’t put out or mentioned any upgrades for the steering wheel or pedals. The only thing I like better about the Mad Catz wheel is the look of it.

The other wheel we can compare this to is the Logitech G920, which is also about $100 more than the TX. The G920 offers a better stock rim and comes with a 3 pedal set standard, which is certainly a good value. They do have add on shifter for it sold separately, but it is not nearly as nice as the Thrustmaster shifter. Based on the stock package, I do rate Logitech G920 a .5 point higher than the TX, if you are not looking to upgrade and customize your racing experience.

This is by far the best selling steering wheel for Xbox one on this website and it is certainly worth the praise it gets. There have been a few wheels that have hit the market since this one came out and none have de throwned the king just yet, unless your talking about the TX Leather version.

If you are looking for a great mid priced wheel, this is your best option and works great with all of the current racing titles for Xbox One.

Without a doubt the Thrustmaster TX package is awesome. It’s worth every penny they charge and will change the way you crave a racing game. Once you have a a great Xbox racing wheel in your hand, you will NEVER want to pick up the sticks again to play a racing game. What makes this wheel a cut above the other wheels is that is is priced better and offers so many more options for adding on peripherals like rims, shifters, and pedal sets!
