If you are trying to find a game on par with Codemasters DiRT Rally you are not gonna find that here, but to be honest you are not gonna find that anywhere. WRC 6 however is solid rally game with a thorough career mode experience, well thought out stages, and a nice handling model that makes the game WAY MORE driveable for the casual racer than DiRT Rally.

The graphics arn’t gonna blow you away and it is not jam packed with cars and tracks…but this is by far the most fun I have had with a WRC title in a long time.

WRC 6 Best Features

What stands out the most about WRC 6 is the length of the stages and the narrow driving paths. Because the driving lane is so tight and laden with obstructions you feel a great sense of speed as trees, rocks, and road hazards are missing your car by inches. The stages are split out amongst 14 countries featured in the 1016 World Rally Championship and there is a bunch of two car special stages mixed in (although no rally cross).

In each country you are not getting a large amount of stages, but in comparison to DiRT Rally you are getting 2X the amount. Where the stages lack though compared to DiRT is in the looks…they are just not as polished and lack the flair like dirt kick up and water splashes.

Split Screen

Another great feature added was the ability to race in split screen. Now you and a friend can race at the same on the same console. That is a ton of fun and gets your heart racing at 100 mph.

Not Enough Drama

Where WRC 6 lacks from a driving experience is the dramatic crashes and effects. Its just not hitting on all cylinders when it comes to things you would want to play back on replay and say “I can’t believe that just happened”.

Rally Cars

All of the cars in the game are nicely done and well detailed. Throughout the course they take on some visual damage and scratches. Where the cars lack though is in the sheer number available in the game. Unlike Sebastian Loeb Rally Evo where you can drive some iconic rally classics, WRC 6 just gives you the current 2016 Rally cars which all look pretty much the same. They do handle well though so that is a big plus.

Good Handling Model

All of the cars handle well and are pretty newbie friendly. Don’t get me wrong here…I’m not talking full on simulation feel, but a game that is casual friendly, yet still requires some driving finesse. All of the vehicles give off a nice sense of weight which is really important for rally racing because turning is all about proper weight distribution. The cars also give off a nice feel for the terrain under your tires particularly when your cranking up the handbrake and pushing your car through a hairpin. Overall I would say the cars are bit more grippy than loose and the handling is forgiving, but not quite like an arcade game.

Game Audio

I love loud engines, squealing turbos, and lots of racket when I race, and WRC 6 is a bit lacking in this department. By default the sound is turned down low and if you grab the game the first thing I would recommend is turning it up. The cars still wont growl enough and the gravel kicking around in your tire wells will still be hard to hear, but the audio is fine for what it is and its just not gonaa knock your socks off.

WRC 6 Pace Notes and the Co-Driver

The pace notes are servicable, but are delivered in a robotic fashion with not much intonation or personality. You can choose between simple pace notes or more complex and its vintage rally in the execution of them. Sometimes in a stage with multiple corners tied together the pace notes overlap themselves which is weird, but overall they are fine.

Your Rally Career

The career mode is a lot of fun, but nothing new really being added to the rally racing genre here. This mode does the job of getting you in between stages and giving you just enough background and story line to carry you from Junior WRC up to the big show without driving you through lots of boring menus. If you are looking for a great career mode like F1 2016 features, WRC 6 falls short, but its a bit more polished to me with race day flavor than the career mode featured in DiRT Rally.

WRC 6 Review Xbox One Wrap Up

The game is decent and is much more playable for the casual racer who wants a rally game and has become frustrated with crashing in DiRT Rally. It does a good job of representing the WRC brand and it captures the essence of what rally racing is all about.

The driving is a ton of fun thanks to the narrow tracks, sense of speed, and solid car handling physics. It is a big upgrade from WRC 5 and I think that this re-instills my faith that this franchise is worth keeping around. If you are looking for a more driving friendly rally game that isn’t gonna make you wanna through your controller at the screen or rip your Xbox racing wheel from the wheel base…this game is worth a look.

Forza Horizon 3 is a perfect hybrid of a simulated racing experience with all of the insane fun of an arcade racer. Whats even better is that it is built to be customizable to steer the gameplay towards your preferences…wanna just go fast and whip a car through the Australian Outback, just pick a car and get in, but for gamers who want to ratchet up the difficulty you can tweak all the vehicle tuning from differentials to aero.

Horizon 3 is an open world racer set in Australia. The map is huge and feels much bigger than Horizon 2, but not quite as big as the US map in The Crew. FH3 truly captures the beauty of the Australian Continent and is one of the most visually stunning racing games ever made. You get to race through cities, open roads, beaches, rain forest jungles, and many other terrains under a awesome blanket of blue and pink skies and clouds.

Forza Horizon 3 Cars

FH3 boasts 350 cars at launch and there is regularly scheduled DLC car packs coming. For an open world racer this is the largest amount of cars I ever rember being available in a title like this.

The one thing that stands out about the car selection is the variety. From exotic super cars like Mclaren’ to classics like the Aston Martin DB5, or from the Alumi craft 2015 Class 10 Dune Buggy Race Car to the Baldwin Motorsports 2015 #97 Monster Energy Trophy Truck. There are also a great number of Australian cars in the game the likes of which I had never experienced before like the 2014 FPV Limited Edition Pursuit Ute.

Each car you drive handles unique and the Forza handling physics seem well represented even in this hybrid sim-arcade style racer.

No Rules Racing

As an avid sim racer I tend to like rules about clean driving and corner cutting etc, but all of that gets thrown out for the sake of fun in Horzon 3. No matter how you drive there are no penalties, which I am learning to appreciate. The point is not to drive perfect, the point is to have fun. You can choose to stick to the map navigation or simply ignore it and make your own way towards whatever destination you want. Nothing is off limits, driving through jungle, racing through water, or launching your car off huge cliffs.

The game also tends to give you praise no matter what you do. If you drive clean you get rewarded with points and if you flip the car and smash into someone’s house the game tells you fantastic wreck. As is with all Forza games, you do have the ability to rewind if you want to correct your mistakes.

FH3 Story Line

If you are not familiar with the Forza Horizon series, all of the games revolve around a racing festival. The festival is a series of events focused around music and racing that put you in competitions set all over the map.

What Horizon 3 does different than previous titles is that you are no longer just a participant in the festival you are the host. This sets you up for customizing the events and making the game play how you want it. You can even choose from a variety of avatars and find pick your name from a huge list of choices. For example I set my name as “James” and that is what the game calls me. Another cool feature is the ability to customize your license plate.

I think what Playground games was going for in Horizon 3 was choice. By making you the festival host you can decide any way you want to race…all you have to do is choose the type of cars you want, time of day, and weather for each race. Hosting the festival is no work at all and really that game tries to get you out on the road as fast as possible.

The game has lots of challenges and races to attend, but the real fun can be found in the showcase events where you can race against cars that are air lifted onto the track or even race against a freight train.

The Game Has a Social Element

I am the type of driver who races offline, but for those who are looking for the community racing experience FH3 has a lot to offer. Like previous Forza titles the game features drivitars of your friends and other gamers. The drivitars are programmed to emulate their driving styles and tenancies. This makes for a nice competitive atmosphere because its always fun to beat your friends or wreck them to make sure they dont finish in front of you.

If drivitars aren’t your thing and you want real human interaction Horizon 3 thrives on it’s seemless online component. You can quickly go from offline to online with no lag or drop outs. There is a lot of different online event types to choose from sprint races to team races and there even silly online race modes like capture the flag. Of course to race online, you don’t even need to be in an event you can just enjoy driving through the open world with other gamers online.

Incredible Sights and Sounds

While the game does run at 30 FPS it looks great on the Xbox One with no frame drops or tears. Horizon 3 is easily one of the best visually pleasing racing games of this generation much attributed to the dynamic lighting engine which makes fantastic glares from the pristine sky reflect perfectly off the shiny metal on your car.

All the cars are beautifully done and show good wear and tear from as you kick up dirt from the outback and brush your fender into a tree. The car interiors from the cockpit view really capture the essence of what these cars look and feel like.

Everything about this game looks great, but what makes it so outstanding is the detail of the sky. From the clouds to the richness of the blue to fading sunsets and the darkness of the nights the way Plaground games captured the sky is unlike anything you have seen in a game before.

From a sound perspective, this game sounds noticeably better than Horizon 2. The cars really have a nice roar to the engines and everything seems bigger and louder. I would go as far as to say this is the best sounding Forza game to date, even better than Forza Motorsport 6.

How is Forza Horzon 3 with a Steering Wheel and Pedals?

FH3 is a lot of fun with a steering wheel and pedal setup on Xbox One or on PC, but the force feedback isn’t quite as good as Horzion 2. It seems that the amount of FFB was downgraded and the best way to get a bit more out of your wheel resistance is to tweak your settings by lowering the DOR. I get that this is an aracde style racer, but I certainly would of liked a bit more out of my wheel with the game

Forza Horizon 3 Review Wrap Up

Aside from the lack of Force feedback Horizon 3 has the game is a lot of fun. If you are sim racing fan this is still a good game to take for a spin and not take yourself so seriously. There are plenty of moments in the game that will get your heart beating and raise your adrenaline levels as you try to navigate your way through trees back onto the road.

The game has a lot of variety and more DLC content to come so I am expecting this game to be fun for a long time. After all I still like Horion 2 which came out in 2014. Playground games did a nice job of building on what they already had…a fun open world racer with a bigger map, more customization options, a better social experience, and more cars than you can wrap your head around.

FH3 is easily the best open world racing game I have ever played.

While the game features the 2016 NASCAR Spring Cup racing season with all of the drivers, liveries, and tracks it has mediocre graphics, un-realistic handling physics, a terrible collision engine, un-challenging AI, and a poor user interface.

IF it seems that my assessment of the game is rather cruel compared to other titles, I’ll chalk that up to the fact that this franchise falsely advertised what we should expect from this racing title. This title was not only meant to compete with the likes of Forza, F1 2016, and Assetto Corsa, but it was supposed to serve the NASCAR racing fans as something to keep them engaged in the off season.

NASCAR Heat Evolution Xbox One Gameplay

You can also choose to race Arcade or simulation, neither of which are very challenging. With arcade mode the physics of the cars are much more loose and in simulation your steering inputs become more sensitive. Either way most of the track you can just jam on the throttle and turn your way around the tracks without ever once having to apply the brakes.

Graphics that Feel Like the Last Generation

BEST RACING WHEEL FOR NASCAR HEAT EVO

The lightening engine is pretty week, the cars don’t shine, there is now sharp glare making the cars feel alive. The tracks lack characteristics of being raced like deep rubber marks in the tarmac (there are some, but its weak), marks on the walls from accidents, or tire tracks through the grass. For example you can do a doughnut in the grass and your car leaves no tire marks.

There is a generic looking smoke that comes out of the cars after minor spinouts and the developers over abuse the use of it for a very arcadey looking effect. The game doesn’t even have a damage model built in so if you crash your car it will never show any effects of wear and tear.

Lack of Features and Too Many Locked Tracks

The game doesn’t have any features to change your cars setups for specific tracks. This means you can’t fine tune your car for particular tracks and save the settings. For example, if you want your car to have max acceleration at Bristol and then tune it to be a bit looser at Talladega, you have to go and change the settings for each race. This is extremely time consuming and isn’t really geared towards new racers who don’t know what they are doing. The only thing you can really adjust quickly is in the options menu you can move a few sliders to adjust your steering, brake, and throttle sensitivity.

The game features a pit lane, but it doesn’t do anything. When you go into pit lane nothing happens your car doesn’t get fixed. That actually makes alot of sense in Heat Evolution, because the game doesn’t have a damage model feature so there is nothing to fix…no tire ware, no aero damage, no nothing. How can we have a want to be sim NASACR game in 2016 with no pit lane?

The in race HUD only features an odometer and a leader board, but no track map. You have no sense of where you are on the track in relation to other drivers. You can’t tell if there is an accident or how far you are ahead or behind. There are also only 3 camera angles: hood cam, cockpit, and a chase cam all of which don’t offer the ability to adjust them to your personal preferences.

BEST STEERING WHEEL SETTINGS FOR NASCAR HEAT EVOLUTION

When you get the game and you want to feel great about your purchase you want to explore around and race a few tracks, but you can’t. They make you unlock tracks!! You only get 4 tracks to start and then everything else you have to race to unlock. The game is just not that good for you to warrant spending the time to unlock the tracks you want to race. This to me is a huge mistake by the developer and something you just don’t see in racing games anymore.

Racing Online is a Mess

Since the AI isn’t very challenging, you are probably gonna want to explore some stiffer competition online. You will be disappointed here as well.

The game offers 3 different lobby types: Hosted, Normal, and No Rules. They essentially all race EXACTLY the same. The only difference is that Hosted means you can kick people out, normal means you can’t kick people out, and no rules is where they say go ahead and drive like an A**HOLE. The problem is that in all 3 lobbies everyone drives like an A**HOLE. There are no disquals, penalties, or discouragement for trolls driving outside of the no rules lobby.

The only thing they did right with the online mode is that they took away the yellow flags. In previous NASCAR titles when you drive online there was always a yellow flag out…you would drive a straightaway and then people would wreck, you would drive under yellow for a few seconds, then it goes green you hit another straight, and then the yellow flag comes back out. At least they fixed that issue, but…

The one thing yellow flags allow people to do is catch up when someone wrecks them…that is now gone. If you wreck online your race is pretty much over, because with no cautions, you will NEVER catch up. This pretty much gives all the advantage to whomever starts at the pole position.

Another aspect they get wrong with online modes is that they don’t even incentivize it. When you race online you don’t earn anything towards building your single player career mode. It doesn’t help you work towards unlocking any of the tracks or features like upgrading your garage.

NASCAR Heat Evolution Xbox One Review – Wrap Up

If you are thinking about buying this game, DON’T SO IT!!! Save your money, this is not the NASCAR game you deserve as a consumer. The best way to let the developers know this game is unacceptable is not to purchase it. It is weak on graphics, limited on features, and for a game that said it wanted to be a simulated racing experience offers no challenge whatsoever.

To date, this is the lowest rating I have ever given out for a game since this blog started in 2014. I couldn’t be more disappointed, as I had really high hopes for Heat Evolution.

What is Assetto Corsa

This game developed by KUNOS in 2013 has been a main stay on the PC as a racing simulator and has become a favorite among sim racers and is often regarded as one of the best racing games on PC. In August of 2016 it was ported over to the Xbox One and PS4 and hopes to compete with the likes of the Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo franchises.

While I think this game is going to be a HUGE hit with a certain niche audience (like the readers of this blog), because of its fantastic handling physics, pristine engine sounds, and decent looking in race graphics…the causal racing gamer will find Assetto Corsa to be tedious and unfullfilling. If 100% simulation, deep immersion, and uncompromised authenticity are what you want, this is the console racing title you have waited for….But keep reading, cause there are other issues.

Cars and Tracks

The game features 80+ unique cars and about 11 laser scanned tracks that have various iterations. The game boasts that it comes with 102 cars, but that is not entirely true…there are about 80 cars and then 22 that are repeats and the second version is just a variation of the original car with more HP added for example. There is an OK variety of car manufacturers and they seem to have a lot of Lotus’s.

The track selection is a bit lite and I think overtime this limited amount of tracks will not hold many peoples interest.

Weak Menus and User Interface

I normally don’t focus to much on menus and UI for games, but it’s worth noting for Assetto Corsa since it is particularly poor. The menus do look very clean, but the type and text is extremely small making it very difficult to read on your TV. This makes tuning and reading descriptions of parameters very difficult. Not to mention when you do wanna make a change they don’t use sliders you have to d-pad through cycles of numbers.

While AC does provide options for making adjustments to settings such as assists, a few specific types of force feedback, and AI difficulty, there are plenty of settings that they stripped out of the PC version of the game when they ported it. For example in the advanced wheel settings there is no option to adjust deadzone and in the field of view settings your only choices are 50% up to 60%. There are about 25-30 settings I can easily say that are missing from the PC version and I am kind of annoyed they left out of the game.

An example of poor UI is if you start a race and you feel like your controller settings need adjustments, you have to back all the way out to the main menu, change your settings, and then reload the whole race. This creates alot of wasted time, when all you want to do is get into the race.

Uninspiring Career Mode

The career mode is bland to say the least. It is basically a mix of special events strung together that don’t provide you with a great mix of cars and tracks. Winning and losing races offers no type of feeling and doesn’t push you to want to succeed. For example, when you win or lose a race once you cross the finish line you car jumps to pit lane. There is no podium for wins or any type of indicator on what just happened. It’s actually rather confusing when you finish a race…your not really sure what happened.

My biggest concern is with the small amount of tracks combined with the lack of sense of victory how long will AC keep me entertained! With the career mode being boring, I do find the hot laps, special events, time attacks, and practice sessions to be a lot of fun…but for how long, im not sure!

Racing Online is a Mess

The only option for online racing is public lobbies which means trolling, horrible driving, unclean laps, and thats of course only if you survive the first turn. KUNOS hasn’t said whether or not private lobbies will become available.

So for now you best bet is too race the AI, but…

Even on Easy the AI is Hard

This is actually something that I am happy about. I am an experienced racer and I was struggling on medium difficulty and even wasn’t blowing away the competition on easy. Holding a lead is extremely challenging and catching up to the pack after a mistake feels impossible. The AI does stick to the racing line religiously and makes few mistakes. This particularly brutal when you consider the game doesn’t offer rewind like other racing titles geared towards casual racers…in AC one mistake can cost you the race.

There are 4 choices for difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Alien. From what I can tell reducing the AI increases the braking distances of the AI cars and you see them occasionally braking in strange places on long straights. For the most part though the AI never crashes and if you bump into them they suffer little damage.

Now I like the challenge and this is the kind of simulation I have been waiting for on the consoles, but for the casual racer Assetto Corsa is unforgiving and will punish you 10 second time penalties for going off the track. Even on easy a casual racer who gets average lap times in Forza, will be eaten alive by the AI in Assetto Corsa. If you want to succeed in AC you better get good at driving!!

Good Graphics in the Racing Experience, but…

While I think overall games like Forza look more pristine because of how well they do ancillary graphics like grass, trees, and the lighting engine on the cars…the actual racing experience graphics in AC are solid. Cars give off puffs of smoke, dirt kicks up off the side of the road, and overall looks very clean and the sense of speed you get from cockpit view is impressive. The tarmac on the tracks have such fine detail and create a beautiful immersive environment to race in.

I wish the colors were a bit more impressive along with the accompanying graphics on the side of the tracks which look a bit flat, but all of that is forgivable because the driving aesthetics are done well. The sense of speed is good also.

The game does play around 60 fps and you will notice a few tears and skips in certain parts of certain tracks when played on Xbox One.

One area that I don’t particularly love graphically as it relates to racing is the damage model. All the damage looks the same and really you can run straight into a wall at 150 mph and come away with a slightly cracked windshield and a few scuffs on your fender.

Best Sound Engine on a Console Racing Game

The sound engine is incredible. Each car sounds unique and has it’s own soul and personality. With a high end set of headphones on this game is one of the most immersive console racing title I have played.

You can hear everything in this game and inside cockpit view it literally sounds like sitting in a cockpit. When of my favorite effects is when dirt kicks up into your wheel wells and it rattles around a bit before shaking out.

Best Simulated Handling Physics

The biggest concern most people had when KUNOS announced they were porting AC onto consoles is that they were going to dumb down the driving physics. They didn’t do that at all. This game drives better than both Project Cars and Forza Motorsport. RWD cars handle as you would expect with sensitive throttles that will shimmey the back end if not handled with care and you get lots of oversteer with cars not built for racing on tracks.

Each car feels uniquely built to handle as you would expect it to in real life. Now what that means though for a casual racer is your gonna get your ass kicked if you don’t know how to drive!

If you are a Forza Motorsport series you will be shocked when you realize how much Forza compensates for lack of skill. Now Project Cars is a different story as that game has great simulated handling physics; AC delivers here in ways that PCars let me down as they had an even worse UI for adjusting custom settings. This game has the best handling physics on a console title, even better than DiRT Rally.

Racing with a Force Feedback Wheel…WOW

If i had to rate the force feedback Assetto Corsa easily comes in at a 10 out of 10. The feedback is really strong and the vibrations are intense. You even have the ability to fine tune how much FFB you get from the wheel, the road, and the Curbs.

If you are racing with a wheel you are gonna feel every bump in the road, every bit of traction loss in your tires, and a strong pull of the wheel to snap back to center while you plow to fast through a sweeping turn.

What I am disappointed in is the lack of adjustments they allow you to make to fine tune your wheel to your preferences like you can in Project Cars. For example you can’t adjust degrees of rotation in game, deadzones, linearity, or saturation. Now Project Cars went over board with settings, but AC did the complete opposite and thats disappointing.

If you want to adjust wheel rotation it has to be done on the wheel itself. The game automatically determines how much DOR each car should have and then locks you in…with your only option to change on the wheel itself.

Is Assetto Corsa Worth a Purchase on the Xbox One

From my perspective as an avid racing game fan, the answer is YES. This is the game I have been waiting for…an uncompromised realistic driving simulator. This game will punish the cheaters who cut corners and ruin your lap when you catch to much of the inside on the curbs. If you have been on the fence about getting a wheel, Assetto Corsa will be the impetus to go and by one.

Who the game is not for is a casual racer because the AI will chew you up and spit you out, even on easy the game is hard. Using a controller is even more difficult than a racing wheel and with no rewinds and an unfulling career mode I’m just not convinced the average racer will enjoy this game.

My Final Thoughts on AC for Xbox One

It is hard and frustrating when it comes to racing and doesn’t even congratulate you when you win. It has poor UI and menus; it can be hard to navigate to exactly where you want to go without wasting time. The aesthetics that surround the track are not on par with Forza, Project Cars, and F! 2016. Simply the sheer number of tracks, cars, and features makes AC live in the shadow of those racing titles. The career mode is dull and tedious and not even presented well.

So even with all of that said how can I recommend Assetto Corsa…

Easy it is simply a great driving experience on the consoles. All of the things I hate about the game pale in comparison to how much I love racing in this game with a racing setup. The core driving experience is MAGNIFICENT, and features the best handling and a sense of immersion on the Xbox One.

Assetto Corsa is not for the faint of heart…It is hardcore and cruel to novices, but if you want a simulated racing experience with unparalleled realism and you can muster through losing a lot of races the cars are fun to drive.

The 2016 version includes new games modes (including career which had been taken out of F1 2015), the addition of the safety car and virtual safety car, and formation laps. The game features the complete 21 track calendar of events for Formula One’s 2016 season and including the new Baku Circuit in Azerbaijan and all 22 drivers from the 11 racing teams.

Following up the much maligned 2015 game, Codemasters had a lot of bugs to fix, graphics to enhance, and steering wheel force feedback to make stronger for their 2016 release. After putting out surveys to their gaming community asking for feedback this game should be the culmination of everything a Formula One racing fan should want…but does it deliver?

Let’s dig into our review and find out…

F1 2016 Review | The Fans spoke and Codemasters Listened

Codemaster’s went to the community and asked for the most desired features and then incorporated them in the game. For that I praise them and I believe they have built a great game for true F1 fans. However for the casual racer or a console sim racer more used to the likes of games like Forza Motorsport, I believe many of these features will fall by the way side and be forgotten about. Thats not to say these new features are bad, but to illustrate they are not for everyone.

The Safety Car is Great for Immersion, But Can Get Boring

When the safety car comes out (usually when someone breaks down on the track) it is a great time to communicate with your pits and change your race strategy if needed. However, racing under caution is extremely boring especially for 3 or 4 laps and can add as much as 8 – 10 minutes to your total race. For F1 fanboy’s the safety car and virtual safety car will be a great immersive feature, but for the majority or racers it will be a feature they turn off after the first week of playing.

Formation Laps to Warm up Tires and Brakes

Codemaster’s added a nice feature of a formation lap which lets you warm up your tires and brakes. This is also though another mode of slow driving much like the safety car…it kind of gets played out after a few races. While I appreciate the sentiment and true Formula One experience of warming up my tires and brakes, there is no real set goal here. The formation lap feels more like its just for show. Again I think most gamers over time will elect to drop the formation lap, but if you are an F1 fanatic then you will love it!

Racing In Rain/Day and Night

The look and feel of the rain is awesome…driving in it is VERY difficult, but a welcome challenge. The grip is pretty loose and the rumble strips can get pretty slick. It is a lot of fun, but you will pay the price if you have a heavy foot on the throttle on turn exits. In my opinion the rain will separate teh casual racers from the serious sim racers in this game. Unless you like a challenge…you are not gonna enjoy trying to control a car and get competitive speeds in the rain.

The game now offers the ability to choose what time of day you race. This is a nice feature because it not only adds some variety into the look of the tracks, but adds new challenges like the sun glaring in your eyes or if you’re racing at dawn, reduced visibility.

New Launch Feature: Timing your Clutch on Green

This is a nice feature that I wish more racing games had. To get a great start you need to hold down the clutch and get your RPM’s into the perfect range for a quick launch. It certainly isn’t easy to do, but once you master the sweet spot you are golden. Another aspect of this that I liked was that the AI sometimes struggles to get a good launch off the line also.

Slight Improvements to the Damage Model

In the 2015 version of the game damage was very one size fits all. Now there is some very unforgiving damage that can occur like when you clip your front wing on someone’s tire. Of course you can turn the damage off, but for serious racers like myself that is never an option. In addition there are wheel tethers, which are part of real-life F1 racing. While its not a major change to the damage model, it brings a much more realistic feel to the game because they keep your wheels attached during crashes.

The Welcome Return of Career Mode

F1-2016 adds a 10 year career mode, that allows you to build your car and work your way up to a champion level. In this mode you can pick which racing team you want to join, choose who your teammate is, customize your helmet, and even decide the drivers gender. Throughout your career you will work on specific aspects of your car like steering, acceleration, and braking hoping to shave seconds of your lap times and make your vehicle more competitive amongst the other teams. Failure to be competitive will result in demotion to lower racing leagues.

The one part of career mode which is a bit forgettable is the motor home cut scenes where you interact with your PR agent. These scenes are pretty bland, lack character development, and are graphically sub-par compared to the racing experience. In order to move between races in your career you have to sit in the motor home, open your lap top, and select a button. While Codemaster’s was hoping to use these interactions to build a better Formula One racing experience, frankly they just dont add much to the game.

The Best New Feature of F1 2016…

One of the best things added to the game was adding incentives to participate in free practice sessions. Now you have three challenges that motivate you to learn the tracks, understand tire ware, and where you can go flat out. The track-acclimatisation mode has you drive through gates on the track and the faster and more accurate you perform the more credits you earn towards car upgrades in future sessions. Not only are these challenges fun, but there payout for driving practice laps not only helps you learn the tracks, but motivates you to perform the challenges. More racing games need to take this approach!

The Graphics are Better than 2015, but..

Overall F12016 has improved graphically and it seems to handle the frame rate better than its predecessor. The cars look really good and the overall look and feel of the track at high speeds look like the sharpest they have ever been for any game in the series. One of my favorite graphical additions is the heat haze effect that you can see in cockpit view when you are tailing another driver.

There are two areas graphically that still leave alot to be desired. The tracks themselves do not have any tire ware through the corners and in heavy braking zones, where in previous titles this was present. It may be a small detail, but for a game trying to present itself as a simulated racing experience it seems like track ware and tear should be in the game. The other area the game lacks is in the cut scenes…particularly when showing people. While I am not gonna hold that to hard against Codemaster’s because the racing graphics are good, it’s at least worth mentioning because it is noticeable.

Improved Handling Model

The handling in F12016 is much improved and it looks like Codemasters took some leasons learned from DiRT and applied them here. Now you can really sense the different surfaces, the height of the kerbs, and how well your car is gripping. The throttle is super sensitive and if used inappropriately on turn exits will send your car into a spin. This is real challenging to master, but offers a much improved experience.

I wouldn’t say the handling is as simulated as hard as Project Cars or as forgiving as Forza 6, but I think it has a decent balance of simulation to being a game for the average racer.

The AI is Hard to Beat

Even if you are an experienced sim racer you are gonna find the AI challenging. It’s gonna take some practice just to be competitive at higher difficultly levels. There were moments I was truly having trouble just keeping up to remain in the back of the pack. If you are looking to improve your skills though you can check out my 27 best tips for F1 2016.

Playing F1 2016 With A Steering Wheel

The game play is super fun with a racing wheel. I tested it with the Thrustmaster TX and the Logitech G920, both which offered a great and immersive racing experience in cockpit view. The force feedback was decently strong and you really get a sense of the cars losing grip. Playing with all of the assists off is really difficult, but a fun challenge. If the cars feel a bit too hard for you to control, then I would suggest turning the stability control on. You can read more about racing wheel settings here.

F1 2016 Xbox One Review Wrap Up

I think this game is alot of fun and WAY improved over the previous title. I found myself really enjoying completing hot laps and trying to get on the leaderboards more than I was racing in career mode. Career mode is fun, but is hard and it’s a grind. While I still don’t think the game is perfect, Codemasters did a FANTASTIC job of listening to the F1 racing game community and incorporating their feedback into the game.

For F1 fans this game is a must own and is easily the best F1 racing game to date from the franchise. For casual racers and general racing gamers there is still something here for you that you can get into…a good racing experience. You can always cut out the safety car, skip the formation lap, dial down the difficulty, and add in some assists. The F1 2016 game will definitely make you say “WHOA” if you had previously tried the 2015 game.

What The Critics Rate It

My Opinion On Dirt Rally For Xbox One

Finally a rally racing game that lives up to the hype. Dirt Rally is brutally honest with you about your driving skills and will eat you up and spit you out if you take the slightest steering inputs for granted. Every single race is challenging and emotionally exhausting and rewards you with the feeling of a champion when you put up competitive stage times.

Graphically Dirt Rally kicks the ass of WRC 5 and Sebastian Loeb Rally Evo. The terrain, landscapes, and vehicles look amazing. It’s particularly outstanding in replay mode, where there are moments you can’t distinguish video game from reality.

DiRT really makes it’s bones as a sim racer. This game is not for the faint of heart and is super hard to control the cars with both a racing wheel or a controller. Even an experienced racer like myself struggled to put up competitive stage times in the beginning, but once you get down the basic rally driving techniques you are changed forever.

With a wheel the force feedback is strong and it offers a really nice racing experience giving you a nice feel for the varying road surfaces. The key to getting your wheel right though is starting out with the some good settings for the game. To master driving in the game with a steering wheel and pedal set you need to get good at doing left foot braking and Scandinavian Flicks. With DiRT Rally drifting isn’t an option it is required!

NOTE: On an Xbox One using a steering wheel it’s a bit challenging considering none of the Xbox wheels on the market have a compatible handbrake and you need to assign it to one of the buttons.

DiRT Rally Xbox One Review Wrap Up

Overall DiRT Rally is a ton of fun with stellar graphics and an outstanding rally experience. It translates the franticness of rally driving right into your living room and delivers the most simulated rally experience to date.

If you are a a casual racer, you may find DiRT Rally to be a little frustrating because it is HARD! I assure you that mastering the rally driving skills is extremely rewarding if you have the time and patience to practice. This game in my book is an easy 5 rating, but because I understand it’s not for everyone I’m dialing it back to a 4.5.

My Opinion On Sebastian Loeb Rally Evo

I appreciate what this game was attempting to do, paying tribute to a rally legend, but truly it was a let down in so many ways. The graphics offer a sub par appearance and the driving physics leave a lot to be desired with both a racing wheel or a controller. The game is marketed as a sim style rally game, but the driving inputs don’t feel realistic at all especially when you compare them to other rally titles like Dirt Rally that also released in 2016.

The game does do a good job of putting together an entertaining career mode that span many eras of rally racing. Being I am not a hardcore rally racing fan, I actually found the experience educational. You will learn about the rally drivers the cars and the tracks as you progress.

They game does have a nice array of rally tracks from world wide locations 8 rallies, 64 stages and 5 rally crosses) and while that is pretty beefy they just arnt up to snuff graphically. For a game that is trying to be a rally sim racer, the graphics come across as arcadey and cartoonish. All the dirt, trees, rocks, and advertisements appear very flat and lack depth. The interior car cockpits also look very plain and lack the detail we have come to expect from racing games.

The driving experience itself is just ok. It’s intuitive to understand the driving inputs, but where it falls short are the feel and physics. This is particularly noticeable when using a racing wheel. I tested several different wheels with Rally Evo and non of them delivered the experience I got from competing rally titles. The force feedback seemed very artificial and choppy with not limited room to make adjustments to your experience.

Overall this game was very disappointing to me because I have had it on my radar for over a year. It’s NOT a game you should pay full price for. I would encourage you to check out the FREE demo on Xbox One before you consider purchasing the game. If you were to find the game for between $12-$15 dollars on Games with Gold or used then I think its worth it. This is a rally racer that you can skip out on and would be better off considering WRC 5 or Dirt Rally for a better experience.

The game features tons of stunt and skill obstacles and with online gameplay you will never ever drive alone! This game is much improved from the original title and is a great value for your money now that they added the Wild Run expansion and improved the gameplay.

I was certainly not a fan of the original game and it is still to date one of my lowest rated racing games on XRP, however the Wild Run expansion pack changes this a bit. Now you get the original Crew game which has been given a complete makeover with gameplay and lighting engine enhancements and you get the expansion pack. Whats even better is they are selling this for less than $40 to start!!

My Review of the Crew Wild Run

After the original Crew game was released I didn’t think this series had much hope; the story was corny, the online servers were spotty, and the lack of Xbox driving wheel support made this game pretty lame. I think adding the Wild Run expansion pack, improving the original game, and making it below normal game prices makes me a bit more forgiving.

While being a bigger fan of sim racing games in the likes of Forza 6 and Project Cars this game is just not for me, but I think there is something here for the casual racer and the arcade style racing fan. This game has the potential to be a lot of fun to race with your friend online in an open world. It is pretty impressive how much detail they covered in the US on their maps. I think the expansion pack adds alot of fun content like motorcycles and monster trucks which make the overall experience more diverse and more fun.

The Amazon reviews are coming in pretty strong at a 4.5 For XRP though I am a bit of a harder critic. Given the improvements, the expansion pack, and the consumer friendly price, I give this game a 3.5. Plus I give the developer a pat on the back for VASTLY improving the original game, something that no one ever does for the consumers anymore, Kudos!

WRC 5 Xbox One:

WRC 5 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) takes drivers and production based cars and smacks them right in the middle of some of the toughest driving conditions in the world. The roads are spread across 14 different countries and feature 13 rallies, 66 special stages, and over 250 miles of track through snow packed forest roads to mountainous rocky paths.

The game is much more simulated than WRC games of the past and certainly addressed the needs of the rally community with this title. The graphics are upgraded, the driving physics are improved, the driving environments feel more realistic, and the overall rally experience is captured. The one thing that makes this game awesome is the real drivers and liveries from the 2015 WRC series.

WRC 5 Xbox One Issues

While the game is an improvement form the previous title, there are certainly some limitations that can be seen in WRC 5.

• Graphics: Low frame rate, mediocre resolution, game looks flat
• Sound: The cars sound more like motorcycles
• The Passenger: Feels more like a robot than a partner
• Glitches: Lots of bugs and technical issues like bumpers falling off for no reason or your car occasionally hits an invisible barrier in the track

The two aspects that standout to me that detract from this game are the automatic respawning of your car when you go to far off the road and also the flat graphics of landscape and weather conditions that bring the overall aesthetics down a level.

WRC as a Simulator

The gameplay looks and feels solid and offers so much in terms of driving surfaces and weather. It is more simulated than a title like Forza Horizon 2, but it lacks the graphical depth and soundtrack of a game of that caliber.

Overall driving with a wheel like the TX or G920 is a ton of fun and the insane surfaces like gravel, tarmac, dirt, and snow will have you gripping onto the wheel for dear life.

The driving is pretty challenging and definitely takes some getting used to along with fine tuning your wheel settings correctly. There are also some limited options for tuning your cars like adjusting tires and suspension so all of those things play into the simulation factor.

WRC 5 Xbox One Review – Wrap Up

WRC 5 is a good game if you are a rally car racing fan, but it was certainly made on a low budget and was clearly not polished for release. Overall the driving is a fun, but they really skimped on details for this title. I appreciate the fact that this is the only Rally game available on Xbox One in 2015, but it still has a long way to go to compete with the heavy hitting racing game titles.

Project Gotham Racing 3 also referred to as PGR 3 is the third installment of the Project Gotham Racing series.

PGR 3 features over 80 cars from 30 manufacturers including the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Dodge.
