What is Assetto Corsa

This game developed by KUNOS in 2013 has been a main stay on the PC as a racing simulator and has become a favorite among sim racers and is often regarded as one of the best racing games on PC. In August of 2016 it was ported over to the Xbox One and PS4 and hopes to compete with the likes of the Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo franchises.

While I think this game is going to be a HUGE hit with a certain niche audience (like the readers of this blog), because of its fantastic handling physics, pristine engine sounds, and decent looking in race graphics…the causal racing gamer will find Assetto Corsa to be tedious and unfullfilling. If 100% simulation, deep immersion, and uncompromised authenticity are what you want, this is the console racing title you have waited for….But keep reading, cause there are other issues.

Cars and Tracks

The game features 80+ unique cars and about 11 laser scanned tracks that have various iterations. The game boasts that it comes with 102 cars, but that is not entirely true…there are about 80 cars and then 22 that are repeats and the second version is just a variation of the original car with more HP added for example. There is an OK variety of car manufacturers and they seem to have a lot of Lotus’s.

The track selection is a bit lite and I think overtime this limited amount of tracks will not hold many peoples interest.

Weak Menus and User Interface

I normally don’t focus to much on menus and UI for games, but it’s worth noting for Assetto Corsa since it is particularly poor. The menus do look very clean, but the type and text is extremely small making it very difficult to read on your TV. This makes tuning and reading descriptions of parameters very difficult. Not to mention when you do wanna make a change they don’t use sliders you have to d-pad through cycles of numbers.

While AC does provide options for making adjustments to settings such as assists, a few specific types of force feedback, and AI difficulty, there are plenty of settings that they stripped out of the PC version of the game when they ported it. For example in the advanced wheel settings there is no option to adjust deadzone and in the field of view settings your only choices are 50% up to 60%. There are about 25-30 settings I can easily say that are missing from the PC version and I am kind of annoyed they left out of the game.

An example of poor UI is if you start a race and you feel like your controller settings need adjustments, you have to back all the way out to the main menu, change your settings, and then reload the whole race. This creates alot of wasted time, when all you want to do is get into the race.

Uninspiring Career Mode

The career mode is bland to say the least. It is basically a mix of special events strung together that don’t provide you with a great mix of cars and tracks. Winning and losing races offers no type of feeling and doesn’t push you to want to succeed. For example, when you win or lose a race once you cross the finish line you car jumps to pit lane. There is no podium for wins or any type of indicator on what just happened. It’s actually rather confusing when you finish a race…your not really sure what happened.

My biggest concern is with the small amount of tracks combined with the lack of sense of victory how long will AC keep me entertained! With the career mode being boring, I do find the hot laps, special events, time attacks, and practice sessions to be a lot of fun…but for how long, im not sure!

Racing Online is a Mess

The only option for online racing is public lobbies which means trolling, horrible driving, unclean laps, and thats of course only if you survive the first turn. KUNOS hasn’t said whether or not private lobbies will become available.

So for now you best bet is too race the AI, but…

Even on Easy the AI is Hard

This is actually something that I am happy about. I am an experienced racer and I was struggling on medium difficulty and even wasn’t blowing away the competition on easy. Holding a lead is extremely challenging and catching up to the pack after a mistake feels impossible. The AI does stick to the racing line religiously and makes few mistakes. This particularly brutal when you consider the game doesn’t offer rewind like other racing titles geared towards casual racers…in AC one mistake can cost you the race.

There are 4 choices for difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Alien. From what I can tell reducing the AI increases the braking distances of the AI cars and you see them occasionally braking in strange places on long straights. For the most part though the AI never crashes and if you bump into them they suffer little damage.

Now I like the challenge and this is the kind of simulation I have been waiting for on the consoles, but for the casual racer Assetto Corsa is unforgiving and will punish you 10 second time penalties for going off the track. Even on easy a casual racer who gets average lap times in Forza, will be eaten alive by the AI in Assetto Corsa. If you want to succeed in AC you better get good at driving!!

Good Graphics in the Racing Experience, but…

While I think overall games like Forza look more pristine because of how well they do ancillary graphics like grass, trees, and the lighting engine on the cars…the actual racing experience graphics in AC are solid. Cars give off puffs of smoke, dirt kicks up off the side of the road, and overall looks very clean and the sense of speed you get from cockpit view is impressive. The tarmac on the tracks have such fine detail and create a beautiful immersive environment to race in.

I wish the colors were a bit more impressive along with the accompanying graphics on the side of the tracks which look a bit flat, but all of that is forgivable because the driving aesthetics are done well. The sense of speed is good also.

The game does play around 60 fps and you will notice a few tears and skips in certain parts of certain tracks when played on Xbox One.

One area that I don’t particularly love graphically as it relates to racing is the damage model. All the damage looks the same and really you can run straight into a wall at 150 mph and come away with a slightly cracked windshield and a few scuffs on your fender.

Best Sound Engine on a Console Racing Game

The sound engine is incredible. Each car sounds unique and has it’s own soul and personality. With a high end set of headphones on this game is one of the most immersive console racing title I have played.

You can hear everything in this game and inside cockpit view it literally sounds like sitting in a cockpit. When of my favorite effects is when dirt kicks up into your wheel wells and it rattles around a bit before shaking out.

Best Simulated Handling Physics

The biggest concern most people had when KUNOS announced they were porting AC onto consoles is that they were going to dumb down the driving physics. They didn’t do that at all. This game drives better than both Project Cars and Forza Motorsport. RWD cars handle as you would expect with sensitive throttles that will shimmey the back end if not handled with care and you get lots of oversteer with cars not built for racing on tracks.

Each car feels uniquely built to handle as you would expect it to in real life. Now what that means though for a casual racer is your gonna get your ass kicked if you don’t know how to drive!

If you are a Forza Motorsport series you will be shocked when you realize how much Forza compensates for lack of skill. Now Project Cars is a different story as that game has great simulated handling physics; AC delivers here in ways that PCars let me down as they had an even worse UI for adjusting custom settings. This game has the best handling physics on a console title, even better than DiRT Rally.

Racing with a Force Feedback Wheel…WOW

If i had to rate the force feedback Assetto Corsa easily comes in at a 10 out of 10. The feedback is really strong and the vibrations are intense. You even have the ability to fine tune how much FFB you get from the wheel, the road, and the Curbs.

If you are racing with a wheel you are gonna feel every bump in the road, every bit of traction loss in your tires, and a strong pull of the wheel to snap back to center while you plow to fast through a sweeping turn.

What I am disappointed in is the lack of adjustments they allow you to make to fine tune your wheel to your preferences like you can in Project Cars. For example you can’t adjust degrees of rotation in game, deadzones, linearity, or saturation. Now Project Cars went over board with settings, but AC did the complete opposite and thats disappointing.

If you want to adjust wheel rotation it has to be done on the wheel itself. The game automatically determines how much DOR each car should have and then locks you in…with your only option to change on the wheel itself.

Is Assetto Corsa Worth a Purchase on the Xbox One

From my perspective as an avid racing game fan, the answer is YES. This is the game I have been waiting for…an uncompromised realistic driving simulator. This game will punish the cheaters who cut corners and ruin your lap when you catch to much of the inside on the curbs. If you have been on the fence about getting a wheel, Assetto Corsa will be the impetus to go and by one.

Who the game is not for is a casual racer because the AI will chew you up and spit you out, even on easy the game is hard. Using a controller is even more difficult than a racing wheel and with no rewinds and an unfulling career mode I’m just not convinced the average racer will enjoy this game.

My Final Thoughts on AC for Xbox One

It is hard and frustrating when it comes to racing and doesn’t even congratulate you when you win. It has poor UI and menus; it can be hard to navigate to exactly where you want to go without wasting time. The aesthetics that surround the track are not on par with Forza, Project Cars, and F! 2016. Simply the sheer number of tracks, cars, and features makes AC live in the shadow of those racing titles. The career mode is dull and tedious and not even presented well.

So even with all of that said how can I recommend Assetto Corsa…

Easy it is simply a great driving experience on the consoles. All of the things I hate about the game pale in comparison to how much I love racing in this game with a racing setup. The core driving experience is MAGNIFICENT, and features the best handling and a sense of immersion on the Xbox One.

Assetto Corsa is not for the faint of heart…It is hardcore and cruel to novices, but if you want a simulated racing experience with unparalleled realism and you can muster through losing a lot of races the cars are fun to drive.

The 2016 version includes new games modes (including career which had been taken out of F1 2015), the addition of the safety car and virtual safety car, and formation laps. The game features the complete 21 track calendar of events for Formula One’s 2016 season and including the new Baku Circuit in Azerbaijan and all 22 drivers from the 11 racing teams.

Following up the much maligned 2015 game, Codemasters had a lot of bugs to fix, graphics to enhance, and steering wheel force feedback to make stronger for their 2016 release. After putting out surveys to their gaming community asking for feedback this game should be the culmination of everything a Formula One racing fan should want…but does it deliver?

Let’s dig into our review and find out…

F1 2016 Review | The Fans spoke and Codemasters Listened

Codemaster’s went to the community and asked for the most desired features and then incorporated them in the game. For that I praise them and I believe they have built a great game for true F1 fans. However for the casual racer or a console sim racer more used to the likes of games like Forza Motorsport, I believe many of these features will fall by the way side and be forgotten about. Thats not to say these new features are bad, but to illustrate they are not for everyone.

The Safety Car is Great for Immersion, But Can Get Boring

When the safety car comes out (usually when someone breaks down on the track) it is a great time to communicate with your pits and change your race strategy if needed. However, racing under caution is extremely boring especially for 3 or 4 laps and can add as much as 8 – 10 minutes to your total race. For F1 fanboy’s the safety car and virtual safety car will be a great immersive feature, but for the majority or racers it will be a feature they turn off after the first week of playing.

Formation Laps to Warm up Tires and Brakes

Codemaster’s added a nice feature of a formation lap which lets you warm up your tires and brakes. This is also though another mode of slow driving much like the safety car…it kind of gets played out after a few races. While I appreciate the sentiment and true Formula One experience of warming up my tires and brakes, there is no real set goal here. The formation lap feels more like its just for show. Again I think most gamers over time will elect to drop the formation lap, but if you are an F1 fanatic then you will love it!

Racing In Rain/Day and Night

The look and feel of the rain is awesome…driving in it is VERY difficult, but a welcome challenge. The grip is pretty loose and the rumble strips can get pretty slick. It is a lot of fun, but you will pay the price if you have a heavy foot on the throttle on turn exits. In my opinion the rain will separate teh casual racers from the serious sim racers in this game. Unless you like a challenge…you are not gonna enjoy trying to control a car and get competitive speeds in the rain.

The game now offers the ability to choose what time of day you race. This is a nice feature because it not only adds some variety into the look of the tracks, but adds new challenges like the sun glaring in your eyes or if you’re racing at dawn, reduced visibility.

New Launch Feature: Timing your Clutch on Green

This is a nice feature that I wish more racing games had. To get a great start you need to hold down the clutch and get your RPM’s into the perfect range for a quick launch. It certainly isn’t easy to do, but once you master the sweet spot you are golden. Another aspect of this that I liked was that the AI sometimes struggles to get a good launch off the line also.

Slight Improvements to the Damage Model

In the 2015 version of the game damage was very one size fits all. Now there is some very unforgiving damage that can occur like when you clip your front wing on someone’s tire. Of course you can turn the damage off, but for serious racers like myself that is never an option. In addition there are wheel tethers, which are part of real-life F1 racing. While its not a major change to the damage model, it brings a much more realistic feel to the game because they keep your wheels attached during crashes.

The Welcome Return of Career Mode

F1-2016 adds a 10 year career mode, that allows you to build your car and work your way up to a champion level. In this mode you can pick which racing team you want to join, choose who your teammate is, customize your helmet, and even decide the drivers gender. Throughout your career you will work on specific aspects of your car like steering, acceleration, and braking hoping to shave seconds of your lap times and make your vehicle more competitive amongst the other teams. Failure to be competitive will result in demotion to lower racing leagues.

The one part of career mode which is a bit forgettable is the motor home cut scenes where you interact with your PR agent. These scenes are pretty bland, lack character development, and are graphically sub-par compared to the racing experience. In order to move between races in your career you have to sit in the motor home, open your lap top, and select a button. While Codemaster’s was hoping to use these interactions to build a better Formula One racing experience, frankly they just dont add much to the game.

The Best New Feature of F1 2016…

One of the best things added to the game was adding incentives to participate in free practice sessions. Now you have three challenges that motivate you to learn the tracks, understand tire ware, and where you can go flat out. The track-acclimatisation mode has you drive through gates on the track and the faster and more accurate you perform the more credits you earn towards car upgrades in future sessions. Not only are these challenges fun, but there payout for driving practice laps not only helps you learn the tracks, but motivates you to perform the challenges. More racing games need to take this approach!

The Graphics are Better than 2015, but..

Overall F12016 has improved graphically and it seems to handle the frame rate better than its predecessor. The cars look really good and the overall look and feel of the track at high speeds look like the sharpest they have ever been for any game in the series. One of my favorite graphical additions is the heat haze effect that you can see in cockpit view when you are tailing another driver.

There are two areas graphically that still leave alot to be desired. The tracks themselves do not have any tire ware through the corners and in heavy braking zones, where in previous titles this was present. It may be a small detail, but for a game trying to present itself as a simulated racing experience it seems like track ware and tear should be in the game. The other area the game lacks is in the cut scenes…particularly when showing people. While I am not gonna hold that to hard against Codemaster’s because the racing graphics are good, it’s at least worth mentioning because it is noticeable.

Improved Handling Model

The handling in F12016 is much improved and it looks like Codemasters took some leasons learned from DiRT and applied them here. Now you can really sense the different surfaces, the height of the kerbs, and how well your car is gripping. The throttle is super sensitive and if used inappropriately on turn exits will send your car into a spin. This is real challenging to master, but offers a much improved experience.

I wouldn’t say the handling is as simulated as hard as Project Cars or as forgiving as Forza 6, but I think it has a decent balance of simulation to being a game for the average racer.

The AI is Hard to Beat

Even if you are an experienced sim racer you are gonna find the AI challenging. It’s gonna take some practice just to be competitive at higher difficultly levels. There were moments I was truly having trouble just keeping up to remain in the back of the pack. If you are looking to improve your skills though you can check out my 27 best tips for F1 2016.

Playing F1 2016 With A Steering Wheel

The game play is super fun with a racing wheel. I tested it with the Thrustmaster TX and the Logitech G920, both which offered a great and immersive racing experience in cockpit view. The force feedback was decently strong and you really get a sense of the cars losing grip. Playing with all of the assists off is really difficult, but a fun challenge. If the cars feel a bit too hard for you to control, then I would suggest turning the stability control on. You can read more about racing wheel settings here.

F1 2016 Xbox One Review Wrap Up

I think this game is alot of fun and WAY improved over the previous title. I found myself really enjoying completing hot laps and trying to get on the leaderboards more than I was racing in career mode. Career mode is fun, but is hard and it’s a grind. While I still don’t think the game is perfect, Codemasters did a FANTASTIC job of listening to the F1 racing game community and incorporating their feedback into the game.

For F1 fans this game is a must own and is easily the best F1 racing game to date from the franchise. For casual racers and general racing gamers there is still something here for you that you can get into…a good racing experience. You can always cut out the safety car, skip the formation lap, dial down the difficulty, and add in some assists. The F1 2016 game will definitely make you say “WHOA” if you had previously tried the 2015 game.

What The Critics Rate It

My Opinion On Dirt Rally For Xbox One

Finally a rally racing game that lives up to the hype. Dirt Rally is brutally honest with you about your driving skills and will eat you up and spit you out if you take the slightest steering inputs for granted. Every single race is challenging and emotionally exhausting and rewards you with the feeling of a champion when you put up competitive stage times.

Graphically Dirt Rally kicks the ass of WRC 5 and Sebastian Loeb Rally Evo. The terrain, landscapes, and vehicles look amazing. It’s particularly outstanding in replay mode, where there are moments you can’t distinguish video game from reality.

DiRT really makes it’s bones as a sim racer. This game is not for the faint of heart and is super hard to control the cars with both a racing wheel or a controller. Even an experienced racer like myself struggled to put up competitive stage times in the beginning, but once you get down the basic rally driving techniques you are changed forever.

With a wheel the force feedback is strong and it offers a really nice racing experience giving you a nice feel for the varying road surfaces. The key to getting your wheel right though is starting out with the some good settings for the game. To master driving in the game with a steering wheel and pedal set you need to get good at doing left foot braking and Scandinavian Flicks. With DiRT Rally drifting isn’t an option it is required!

NOTE: On an Xbox One using a steering wheel it’s a bit challenging considering none of the Xbox wheels on the market have a compatible handbrake and you need to assign it to one of the buttons.

DiRT Rally Xbox One Review Wrap Up

Overall DiRT Rally is a ton of fun with stellar graphics and an outstanding rally experience. It translates the franticness of rally driving right into your living room and delivers the most simulated rally experience to date.

If you are a a casual racer, you may find DiRT Rally to be a little frustrating because it is HARD! I assure you that mastering the rally driving skills is extremely rewarding if you have the time and patience to practice. This game in my book is an easy 5 rating, but because I understand it’s not for everyone I’m dialing it back to a 4.5.

What The Critics Rate It

My Opinion On Sebastian Loeb Rally Evo

I appreciate what this game was attempting to do, paying tribute to a rally legend, but truly it was a let down in so many ways. The graphics offer a sub par appearance and the driving physics leave a lot to be desired with both a racing wheel or a controller. The game is marketed as a sim style rally game, but the driving inputs don’t feel realistic at all especially when you compare them to other rally titles like Dirt Rally that also released in 2016.

The game does do a good job of putting together an entertaining career mode that span many eras of rally racing. Being I am not a hardcore rally racing fan, I actually found the experience educational. You will learn about the rally drivers the cars and the tracks as you progress.

They game does have a nice array of rally tracks from world wide locations 8 rallies, 64 stages and 5 rally crosses) and while that is pretty beefy they just arnt up to snuff graphically. For a game that is trying to be a rally sim racer, the graphics come across as arcadey and cartoonish. All the dirt, trees, rocks, and advertisements appear very flat and lack depth. The interior car cockpits also look very plain and lack the detail we have come to expect from racing games.

The driving experience itself is just ok. It’s intuitive to understand the driving inputs, but where it falls short are the feel and physics. This is particularly noticeable when using a racing wheel. I tested several different wheels with Rally Evo and non of them delivered the experience I got from competing rally titles. The force feedback seemed very artificial and choppy with not limited room to make adjustments to your experience.

Overall this game was very disappointing to me because I have had it on my radar for over a year. It’s NOT a game you should pay full price for. I would encourage you to check out the FREE demo on Xbox One before you consider purchasing the game. If you were to find the game for between $12-$15 dollars on Games with Gold or used then I think its worth it. This is a rally racer that you can skip out on and would be better off considering WRC 5 or Dirt Rally for a better experience.

WRC 5 Xbox One:

WRC 5 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) takes drivers and production based cars and smacks them right in the middle of some of the toughest driving conditions in the world. The roads are spread across 14 different countries and feature 13 rallies, 66 special stages, and over 250 miles of track through snow packed forest roads to mountainous rocky paths.

The game is much more simulated than WRC games of the past and certainly addressed the needs of the rally community with this title. The graphics are upgraded, the driving physics are improved, the driving environments feel more realistic, and the overall rally experience is captured. The one thing that makes this game awesome is the real drivers and liveries from the 2015 WRC series.

WRC 5 Xbox One Issues

While the game is an improvement form the previous title, there are certainly some limitations that can be seen in WRC 5.

• Graphics: Low frame rate, mediocre resolution, game looks flat
• Sound: The cars sound more like motorcycles
• The Passenger: Feels more like a robot than a partner
• Glitches: Lots of bugs and technical issues like bumpers falling off for no reason or your car occasionally hits an invisible barrier in the track

The two aspects that standout to me that detract from this game are the automatic respawning of your car when you go to far off the road and also the flat graphics of landscape and weather conditions that bring the overall aesthetics down a level.

WRC as a Simulator

The gameplay looks and feels solid and offers so much in terms of driving surfaces and weather. It is more simulated than a title like Forza Horizon 2, but it lacks the graphical depth and soundtrack of a game of that caliber.

Overall driving with a wheel like the TX or G920 is a ton of fun and the insane surfaces like gravel, tarmac, dirt, and snow will have you gripping onto the wheel for dear life.

The driving is pretty challenging and definitely takes some getting used to along with fine tuning your wheel settings correctly. There are also some limited options for tuning your cars like adjusting tires and suspension so all of those things play into the simulation factor.

WRC 5 Xbox One Review – Wrap Up

WRC 5 is a good game if you are a rally car racing fan, but it was certainly made on a low budget and was clearly not polished for release. Overall the driving is a fun, but they really skimped on details for this title. I appreciate the fact that this is the only Rally game available on Xbox One in 2015, but it still has a long way to go to compete with the heavy hitting racing game titles.

Project Gotham Racing 3 also referred to as PGR 3 is the third installment of the Project Gotham Racing series.

PGR 3 features over 80 cars from 30 manufacturers including the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Dodge. The previous PGR games contained Porsche’s, but PGR 3 omitted them in this version in favor of Ruf. Need For Speed Xbox One Quick Summary

Need For Speed returns with a complete reboot after a fairly disappointing title Need For Speed Rivals and I can’t believe the 22 year franchise let me down two games in a row. While they did some nice additions like adding customization to car graphics and tuning, they removed the ability to play a cop career, added a really obnoxious social media aspect in the game, still haven’t added racing wheel support, and the open world racing feels pretty lifeless.

Need For Speed Xbox One Gameplay

The game plays like a typical Need For Speed arcade style game with over dramatic crashes, an erratic AI, a dramatic cheesy storyline, and lots of high speed. Overall driving is what I expected from an arcade racing game in this franchise.

The biggest thing that makes the gameplay very mundane is the lack of manual transmission. I don’t understand how in 2015 we have a game that does not allow you to shift gears…this creates a lack of engagement and makes the driving feel extremely lifeless. There is also only night driving, there is no daylight whatsoever, and while the graphics and reflections look decent it just gets visually boring.

The AI is strange and there is a rubber banding effect in the game (You can be first for 1 min and then suddenly last within seconds. This seems to be luck based. The car physics seem pretty crazy at first with the default settings, but if you do a little tuning they tend to handle a bit more stable and you can hold the cars through the corners. For the most part the most fun cars you can find will go over 150 mph, anything else just feels pretty bland.

As far as the cars go I think they made some nice choices for the 51 cars, but you can only have 5 in your garage at one time.

Best Features

The biggest standout features in Need for Speed on Xbox One are:
1. Customization of Liveries and Tuning
2. Graphics are great with great ambient lighting, illumination, reflections, and water effects
3. Plays like a typical Need For Speed Game
4. Has great sounds

Biggest Issues

While I have quite a big laundry list of issues with this game let me stick to the core problems:
1. No racing wheel support (unaccepatble in 2015)
2. No manual transmission (makes racing feel un-engaging)
3. You can drive a long time in the open world and never see another car
4. They removed the cop career (which was my favorite mode)
5. Cut scenes and storyline is pretty forgettable and compunded by bad actors
6. Unexplainable drops in frame rate at times it shouldn’t have issues
7. Simply not a $60 game and it feels rushed and unfinished
8. It’s always online even if you want to play in solo mode
9. The social media aspect is obnoxious: You get bombarded with texts, tweets, phonecalls, hashtags, likes, and car selfies

Need For Speed Xbox One Review – Wrap Up

When this game drops to less than $40, then perhaps its worth spinning your tires on, but in the mean time, you will still be happier playing Forza Horizon 2. The game just simply doesn’t compete with the other racing titles put out for the Xbox One in 2015…sure it’s great to have an arcade racer, but this game is a cash grab by EA and shouldn’t be accepted by us as consumers.

You can complete the entire career mode in less than two days which really explains how little depth this game has and if you are thinking about racing online, your options are pretty limited there as well. While the graphics are great, the game with it’s corny story line, bad actors, requirement to be online, lack of manual transmission, and no racing wheel support…

If you are a Need For Speed fan, of course it’s worth a look, but the franchise is just not making any progress and seems to have come to halt on the new consoles.

Finally, Forza 6 is the game we all expected to get from the much maligned Forza Motorsport 5. This time around there are over 460+ cars (the most of any Forza release), 26 tracks with 100+ ribbon variations, rain and puddles, night racing, and all of the top notch sim you can always expect from the Forza series. This is all done at 1080p 60 FPS!

Without a doubt, Forza motorsport 6 is the BEST and most comprehensive racing game released to date.

The Gameplay Is Easily the Best of Any Forza Game

As always the driving physics for the game are AWESOME! The cars really give off a sense of grip and weight allowing you to feel subtle shifts in your driving. Forza also expands the competition field from 16 competitors in Forza 5 to 24 competitors.

On the whole the driving and gameplay are very similar to Forza 5, but there is an overall better feel and realism. It’s also worth noting that the sound engine seems vastly improved offering more accurate portrayal of sounds particularly when taking damage or driving in tight spaces.

Most Cars Ever In a Game at Launch

Since Forza 4, we have been waiting for a title loaded with car choice options, this is it my friends…we have gotten what we asked for! Forza Motorsport 6 packs over 460 cars and includes:

80’s Cult Classics
90’s Performance Cars
Present Day Hyper Cars
F1 Cars from the 60’s, 70’s, and present day
WTCC cars
V8 Super Cars
Indy Cars
Can-Am Cars
Pre War Open Wheelers

The variety is deep and the look of the cars in fantastic. Staying true to the Forza series, they are all upgradable and ready for a fresh livery to be slapped on. All the cars are viewable in Forzavista mode, which is laid out similar to Forza 5.

One of the biggest improvements for the cars is simply the filing system for sorting through them. In past titles you had to scroll left and right and use a limited filter for finding what you wanted. Now as you scroll left you move through manufacturers and the individual car models appear vertically. This is a very welcome change and much needed given the amount of cars this game features.

Finally Features We Clamored For

Rain

Pouring rain, puddles and night driving are the most dramatic difference between FM6 and other Forza titles. While having dynamic weather like Horizon 2, would have been better, it is nonetheless done very well in the game. For the rain, you get your wind shield wipers going, rain drops moving across the windshield and car body, and 3D puddles placed on the track accurate to real puddle build up placements on tracks. What’s crazy is that when you hit a puddle, you don’t just hear it, you can feel it.

This makes for awesome racing, having to change your line because there is a puddle mid corner apex or screaming down a straight and hydroplaning right off the track.

Night Racing

Night Racing looks fantastic as well. One of the best looking tracks is Daytona with the great big stadium lights beaming down onto the blacktop, which cause multiple shadows to creep off the cars.

There are however no tracks that combine rain and night, and the rain or night features are only available on certain tracks.

Split Screen is Back

Worth mentioning here, Turn 10 has also brought back split-screen which was not available in Forza 5.

New Feature Called Mods

Mods stands for Modifications and can either be a bonus or a handicap. For example you can earn a mod that earns you a 10% credits increase or you can earn a mod that places you at the back of the starting grid and then awarding you bonuses for a top 3 finish. It’s up to you if you even want to use them, but you can only use most of them once and they can’t be used in multi-player, leagues, or rivals.

Career Mode With 70+ Hours of Racing

The super long Career mode is two faceted; It has volumes in which progress you need to play the game to unlock future events and showcases which are designed to pay homage to vehicles, racing series, or eras. Career does a great job of putting you in a wide variety of cars and now offers you the ability to tune or practice pre-race. For showcases you don’t even need to own the car for the event and they serve as a nice break-up in between your standard career mode races.

It’s Damn Near Perfect, But There’s Always Something

The one thing that stood out to me as slightly annoying is that the career mode is very linear, you can’t just bounce around into a different racing series. I also found myself wanting the race weekend feature offered in Project Cars, but there isn’t anything other than race and practice in Forza 6.

The Mods are take it or leave it and I think they are tailored for the more casual player, for me I find myself forgetting about them.

Without dynamic weather and day/night changes everything does start getting a little repetitive, however the variety of tracks should help balance some of that out.

Forza 6 as A Simulator Is the Best On Xbox One

For testing Forza 6 as a simulator, I used a Thrustmaster TX, TH8A shifter, T3PA Pro Pedals, and both the F1 rim and the 28 GT Rim. I’ve got it all strapped to the Playseat Evolution, with a custom vibration setup.

The first thing I noticed when playing Forza 6 with a wheel and pedal set is that the force feedback is much stronger than Forza 5. That is welcome change because Forza 5 was fairly weak.

The cars feel really good with the wheel and the game offers you some standard options for fine tuning your wheel settings (although not as customizable as Project Cars). Because Forza 6 has such incredible physics the cars handle extremely accurate with the wheel, shifter, and pedals. For example when you are shifting you will notice a delay in the gear shift on a Volkswagen Golf as opposed to an immediate shift when you are driving a high end Ferrari.

The puddles feel really good when using the wheel also. If you clip a puddle on one side of your car, the steering wheel is gonna jerk in that direction…it is frustrating and incredibly awesome at the same time.

Using the F1 rim for F1 cars and Indy cars, gives a nice authentic feel, but the 28 GT Leather rim feels 10X better with the heavier force feedback on Forza 6. On the whole though any Thrustmaster rim add on is gonna feel great with this game.

If you are running vibration from your Xbox to your gaming seat, you will notice an increase in the games low end sounds. The rumble strips, the car engines, the tunnels, everything is bassier. This make for some nice vibration in your bass shakers.

Overall the sim feel of this game is great. I would say the cars are more controllable than Project Cars, but out of control enough for you to have to have some Xbox driving skills to succeed. Doing a little bit of baseline tuning of the cars can go a long way.

Forza 6 Bundle and Expansion Packs

With the release of the game Turn 10 announced they would offer a special Forza branded Xbox One console and controller. The console and controller are blue like the Ford Gt that is on the game cover and the console has special features like an engine sound when you turn it on.

Two Expansion packs are also available for the game. For the first time since forza 4, Porsche makes it’s way back into Forza and for the very first time there is a full Nascar expansion. Both packs sell for $20 and make some nice additional content to the game adding new cars and tracks

Forza Motorsport 6 Xbox One Review Wrap Up

Forza Motorsport 6 is far and away the best racing game on a next gen console and has something for everyone from the automobile fanatic to the slam on the gas/jam on the brake casual player. While the game isn’t perfect and a few other race titles have showed us what Forza is missing, this game is a huge upgrade from Forza Motorsport 5. For me FM6 beats out the other racing titles put out this year both with visuals and simulation and is a must own game for anyone.

If you are planning on adding a forza racing wheel, then your experience will go from a 4.5 to a 5!

F1 2015 is the first F1 game released for the Xbox One and features all the real cars and tracks from the F1 2014 season. Codemasters did a complete overhaul of the driving physics, amped up the competitiveness of the AI, and delivers you tons of fun while man-handling your car around the track. This game is far better than F1 2014 on the Xbox 360.

But F1 2015 isn’t the game I think we all expected. They stripped down the game modes to just time trial and career as well as fall short in game depth and ancillary graphics. If you have been a fan of the F1 games in the past your interest in F1 2015 will lie solely on whether or not your favorite game mode has been taken out. Even with all of that said, this game is still solid and the cars drive fantastic!

F1 2015 Gameplay on Xbox One Is Fantastic

The handling in this game is the best it’s ever been for any F1 title. In previous titles, you might find the traction control a bit forgiving, but in F1 2015 the cars are riding on the edge and it’s a much more simulated Formula One like experience. In other words, you can’t jam on the accelerator on your corner exits and expect to stay in control, you need slowly pump it to make sure you don’t cause yourself to spin out. This makes for much more engagement, immersion and simulation.

With the AI set to hard it is certainly more challenging as it doesn’t always stay on the race line and they will overtake you if you are slow. The AI definitely does a good bit of defending, overtaking, and forcing you to make split second decisions that will ultimately make or break your race.

The AI isn’t always perfect either it still makes some dumb driving decisions, but than again so do we, so essentially the AI is a bit more human.

The game does allow for assists such as traction control if you weren’t up for the pro challenge and hard settings, but I personally think that removes a lot of the fun this game has to offer.

The race engineer is more involved in F1 2015 more than other titles in the F1 series and provides good information during all race sessions from practice to qualifying and through the actual race itself. The engineer continually chimes about tire wear, track conditions, and strategy.

F1 2015 on Xbox One Has Some Great Features

F1 2015 features all of the tracks and drivers from the real F1 2014 racing season. Lewis Hamilton shown in game on the right

Quick Race allows you to pick any car and any track and gives you the ability to do a full race or a few laps.

The championship season is where you can select your favorite driver and race a full season with qualifying and practice laps included.

Pro Season mode is the hardest level possible and is basically championship mode with no options. This features full race weekends and full race lap counts. In this mode you are forced to drive using cockpit helmet cam view with no on screen hud, which means you can’t see your map.

Time Trial mode is basically your hot lap mode, here you want to reduce your tire pressure and simply try to set your best lap times.

F1 2015 Xbox One Complaints: The Game Is Far From Perfect

One of my biggest gripes of F1 2015 is that they removed the career mode and the ability to create your own driver. I always find that to be such a great aspect of sports and I really think they are losing something by removing that from this game.

There is also no co-op game play of any kind or local split screen play.

The multiplayer also has it’s flaws, because there is tons of corner cutting online and the amount of time penalty you are given for corner cutting doesn’t equal the time you saved for cutting. Essentially it’s really not a penalty and creates a mess for online racing.

The multiplayer also seems a bit buggy and has graphical glitches, however this is most likely going to result in a patch and should not be an issue for to long.

No DLC, because of licensing issues with F1.

While the graphics look better than any previous F1 game, it lacks in comparison to titles like Forza 5 and Project Cars. There are many screens that look flat, feature dull colors, and proper lighting. The driving itself looks ok, but often times the secondary graphics look a bit video gamey.

The damage engine in F1 2015 is weak. The crashes look pretty crazy, but the damage is spotty at best. For example if you ram the back of another car at full throttle its just as likely for your front wing to remain intact as it is to completely explode.

One thing I think this game missed in terms of replicating the F1 experience was failing to have a safety car or a virtual safety car. So essentially when there is a pile up, you continue to go around the track as if nothing happened.

F1 2015 Is An Awesome Simulated Racing Experience

The racing experience on F1 2015 for the Xbox One is decent. The cars are constantly testing your reflexes and trying to control the wheel is like wrestling a bull at 200 mph. The force feedback and short wheel rotation of 270 degrees feel realistic and offer a comparable experience to driving F1 cars in Forza 5 or Project Cars. The only noticeable difference for me is that the force feedback feels weaker than other racing titles.

The real trick of successfully racing f1 2015 is learning how to feather your gas pedal is to not spin out on turn exits and also apply your brake pressure only up to 70% to avoid locking up your wheels. Mastering thee two elements will make for significantly faster lap times, less crashes, and the ability to overtake the AI on the turns.

Using the F1 rim on the TX Wheel Base also makes a huge difference in the immersion factor. The paddle shifters also feel really good when you are clicking up through the gears on your turn exits.

Another thing I noticed about F1 2015 is that my bass shakers in my seat don’t vibrate as strong as games like Pcars. While this isn’t a major factor it is indicative of a game with lower audio settings and lacking good depth in bass frequency ranges.

F1 2015 Xbox One Review Wrap up

F1 2015 is pretty awesome, especially if you are racing with a steering wheel setup, but there is a bit to be desired in the strength of the force feedback. While I do think they stripped down some important game modes out of this title, the driving experience is exceedingly better than previous F1 games on the 360. The biggest concern I have is the lack of driving modes and no DLC, how long can I be entertained by racing the championship series?

That’s my big question…how long can I like this game, because really there are not a lot of options, especially if you have expectations from previous F1 titles with career mode. Given the physics and trying to rate this game solely for what it is and not compare it to previous versions that had more modes, I give this game a 3.5.

Project Cars is intended to represent a realistic driving simulation that offers a unique approach that allows gamers to choose between different motorsport disciplines and progress through a career similar to that of a real racer. What make this title unique amongst it’s competitors Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport is that they give instant access to all cars and tracks right from the beginning, you don’t have to earn anything.

The game features various racing events that span multiple days, including practice and qualifying, and also includes day and night racing and dynamically changing weather conditions. If you are looking for a driving simulator on your Xbox One then this is a great choice, but pump the brakes for a second because there some things you need to know, before you purchase it.

Project Cars Gameplay Is Great With The Right Settings

Project Car game play varies greatly depending on whether or not you using the default settings or custom setting for your controller or Xbox racing wheel. Out of the box the cars are very difficult to drive with any device and you really need to fine tune your controller or wheel setting for each car. Once you get the settings right, the cars feel like they respond accurately to the tracks and situations. The game really offers one of the best sim experiences on a console, not only in the feel of how the cars handle, but offering pit stops, time penalties, on other situations that face real racers.

In my opinion, the game offers a much better experience with an Xbox racing wheel, because of the amount of custom control setting you have for the force feedback. For example you can change how much pull you want the wheel to have, how much shake you get going over bumps, Do you want the feedback to be tough at first and then lighten up or perhaps you like it steady all through a turn.

Overall the racing in Project Cars is solid and the wide variety of tracks really keeps the game interesting for awhile.

Project Cars Has Tons Of Features

Project Cars has quite a few standout features. Race in career mode, race online, tune cars, setup your pit strategies, or take photographs.

The weather element is also awesome. You can choose up to 4 weather effects and have them dynamically change while you are racing. this goes the same for day/night. You can start racing in the day and have it turn to night.

The game has some nice online racing features including community time trials and races. It also takes race trolling very seriously, but posting your online reputation so that people who want to race clean can pick and choose whom they invite to participate.

The AI is also allows you to adjust the difficulty from 0 – 100. The AI puts up a nice challenge, not always sticking to the racing line and trying to block you when you attempt to pass.

One of my favorite features is the Quick Race Weekend. This allows you to schedule practice laps and pre-race qualifying so that you can setup and tune your car perfectly for the race.

Project Cars Complaints: The Game Has Some Serious Flaws

My Project Cars complaints are fairly lengthy. First I don’t understand how Slightly Mad Studios released this game with horrible game controller default settings. Most gamers felt without adjustments the cars are undriveable and just fly right off the track.

Second, they offer alot of customization options, but don’t explain what changing all of those options do…they want you to do trial and error. My feeling is I want to spend my time racing, not making small controller adjustments.

Third, The sound has glitches in it. Often time when you are driving a car and it red lines, the engine sound replicates on top of itself and the game makes really strange sounds. If you are wearing headphones it is really annoying.

Fourth, the game hitched it’s wheel to being a graphically stunning game, which if you are a Forza or Gran Turismo fan, Project Cars falls short. The tracks are done well, but miss that crispness that other games offer.

Fifth, the game menu’s take a long time to save, even when you have not changed any options. For example, if you go to change a controller setting and realize you have clicked in the wrong menu, when you go to hit back, the game auto-saves. I have had a few menu’s take almost 2 full minutes to go back, even when I didn’t make any changes.

Last, but not least, the graphical glitches and bugs run rampant throughout this game. It was clearly put out without being fully tested on the Xbox One.

Project Cars Delivers An Amazing Simulated Racing Experience

When it comes down to it for me, I could car less about certain features or menu navigation…I wanna know how simulated is this experience in my Playseat cockpit as opposed to something that feels like an arcade game.

I like the way Project Cars feels with the force feedback in the Thrustmaster TX racing wheel, the gas and brake on the T3PA Wide Pedal Set, and using the “in cockpit” view in the game, plus using the Th8A Shifter. Overall this view will give you the most simulated feel even if you have a low budget racing set up with a wheel. Don’t get more wrong the game feels great with a controller, but the best experience is with a full racing setup.

When you get your wheel settings just right, this game offers a better simulation experience than Forza 5. The reason is because of all of the force feedback customization that they make available to you. You can really get your wheel to feel exactly how you like it for each car if you have chosen the best steering wheel for Project Cars. It’s also pretty cool when you drive the F1 cars and use the Thrustmaster F1 rim.

Why Are The Rating Low At Amazon For The Xbox One Version?

There are two reasons Project Cars got really low ratings at Amazon. First, when the game first released on Day 1, there were lots of bugs and glitches. The game developers reacted very slowly with game patches to fix the driving settings as many of them made the game unplaybale. Second, a lot of casual racers who play games like Forza Horzon 2 and Need For Speed, had trouble driving because this game is extremely simulated and the cars are very tough to handle. This game is not really for the casual racing game fan.

Project Cars Review – Wrapping Things Up

For 2015 this is the best sim racer on the market, but it’s gonna have some stiff competition up ahead with Forza Motorsport 6 and F1 2015. This game holds it’s own simply because the gameplay and simulation are incredible. I don’t think this game truly rivals Forza and Gran Turismo overall, but i do think it’s fun game to sim race.

The game is super fun and is awesome with the addition of a racing wheel and cockpit, which honestly keeps your interest in the game far more than folks who use an Xbox controller. It really becomes a full body video game immersion experience.

The real holdups for me  are the glitches and bugs that make this game sometimes frustrating. If I had to rate it as a sim, Its a 4.5, but the amount of issues with this game prevent it from scoring higher on my scale.

Project Cars is worth the money, but you will need some time and patience to get your settings right. Your best to see if you can grab this game for under $40.
